Facebook Collaborating with Spotify to Offer Streaming Music

Forbes is reporting that Facebook is currently testing a new streaming music feature. Rumors about Facebook launching its own music service to complete with iTunes are nothing new. However, Forbes’ report suggests that Facebook won’t actually be launching its own music service. Instead, it will be tapping into Spotify, which is already a sensation in Europe.

Spotify-Facebook

The new feature will show up as a small Spotify icon on the left hand side of the Facebook news feed. Clicking on the button will download the Spotify app in the background, providing users with access to Spotify’s massive library of songs. Spotify already has a Facebook app; however, this collaboration will enable them to integrate more tightly, besides reaching millions of more users. Facebook users will also be able to play songs together with their friends. This is an interesting feature that is likely to be particularly appealing to the lovebirds.

The catch is that this service will only available in regions supported by Spotify. Spotify’s services are currently available only in select few European countries including the UK and France. US launch is in the cards, but has been taking a lot longer than anticipated.

Facebook will not be paying Spotify for its services. For its services, Spotify will get access to a Facebook’s user base, many of whom might sign up for the premium subscription. Free users are only allowed to listen to up to 10 hours of music per month.

Mark Zuckerberg Wants Kids Under 13 To Use Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, wants kids under 13 years of age to be allowed to use social networking sites. Though there are millions of kids already using Facebook who are under 13, Zuckerberg wants to make it legal as Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)  restricts websites from collecting personal information of children under the age of 13.

Facebook For Kids

According to  Fortune, Zuckerberg said he wants younger kids to be allowed on social networking sites like Facebook. Currently, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) mandates websites that collect information about users aren’t allowed to sign on anyone under the age of 13. But Zuckerberg is determined to change this.

Zuckerberg’s philosophy is that for education, kids need to start learning at a very young age. Allowing kids onto social networking site, will help them learn new things quickly.

“Education is clearly the biggest thing that will drive how the economy improves over the long term,” Zuckerberg said.

Right or wrong, but I’m sure parents won’t like their kids using Facebook or any other social networking sites at a very young age because they might get addicted to it (You know, there are many useless games on Facebook). With a number of scams spreading on Facebook, I don’t think it’s safe for children to use it. Mark Zuckerberg should rather be concerned about on how he could prevent Facebook from scams.

Tumblr Crosses 250 Million Page Views Per Day

, the popular micro-blogging service just announced that it has crossed 250 million page-views per day. This is definitely big for the micro-blogging service which has seen several ups and downs in the past, including a fight with Anonymous and a very long downtime they suffered due to a database crash.

Tumblr 250 Million Daily Page Views

Tumblr’s growth has been phenomenal and they have managed to do more page-views than Posterous and more recently WordPress, though that might have changed now. However, the service is far from perfect and users are frequently greeted with a message saying that “Tumblr is down for some reason or the other” every now and then.

Tumblr though has managed to overcome several of their infrastructure problems to consistently grow over the last few months. For example, they grew from around 20 million views a day to 250 million views in less than a year. That is almost a 500% growth. Additionally, they have grown more than twice since October 2010.

Tumblr will definitely be happy about these stats, but I hope that they are taking very good care of their infrastructure too as it is really annoying to see that the site is not working when I visit them.

I Can’t Believe You Are In This Video [Facebook Scam Warning]

A new Facebook scam is spreading across the site. This time the scam takes a more personalized approach with wall posts that contain a user’s name with a message which varies.

Facebook Scams

The scam is spreading with messages like "WTF [name] I can’t believe you’re in this video", "ROFL I cant believe you’re tagged in this video", "WTF!! [name] you should untag yourself from the video", "OMG, I can’t believe you are tagged in this video", "WTF!!!, why are you tagged in this video" and so on.

The messages in the wall post may vary and clicking on those links will lead you to spread the infection to your friends too. Please do not click on those links as it will spread the virus to your friends too.

This is definitely a new approach taken by scamsters where they are personally targeting people. In the past, they have used such scam messages to entice users to click on videos for popular celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and more recently the infamous Osama Bin Laden Censored Video scam.

Facebook scams play on two very important traits of the generic Facebook user:-

  1. Their vanity (since they are on a service that asks them to put up their beautiful faces on a book for everyone to see)
  2. Their primal instinct to click things that either deride, complement or supplement their vanity with curiosity.

It is the perfect formula for success. Earlier it was a video about some kid who had summoned the Old Gods to his school (or something else, but it was titled very specifically as "OMG Look What This Kid Did To His School" so I am assuming it was either this or setting it on fire and my money is on the more sinister one.) youtubevid The current scam is a link to [surprise!] a videofrom a friend on Facebook who has apparently seen a video of you on YouTube that either has you looking stupid or has you doing such a fantastic and unthinkable act that said friend cannot  believe that you are "tagged" in such a video.

It is very silly since one cannot be tagged in a YouTube video, and sillier because- no, it cannot possibly get sillier than that. If a user clicks on this link it [probably, since I have no tested this] asks them for access of their entire profile, including friends list and what not. Then the script launches into the entire friend list and links this "video" on each friend’s wall.

The cleverest part of this scam is that it includes the first name of the to-be-victim in the most generic way. Very sneaky. Also incredibly annoying.

OMG Look What This Kid Did To His School Facebook Scam Spreading

A new Facebook scam is rapidly spreading on the social networking site with the message “OMG.. Look What THIS Kid Did to His School After Being Expelled! WARNING: Graphic Content!”

omg_kid_expelled_facebook_scam

The new scam uses a similar tactic used earlier by scammers on where they add a update with a video enticing the user to click through to watch it (For eg, Justin Bieber video scam, Miley Cyrus video scam). Once a user has clicked on the link, they will infect the account and post a message on the user’s wall while asking them to complete surveys to watch the video.

Completing the survey makes the scammers some money, however, in the end you won’t be able to watch any video at all. It is always wise to stay away from such enticing updates as more likely than not, it is a scam.

As a precautionary measure, always check which applications you use and remove unwanted or suspicious ones. If you aren’t sure how to do that, you can always check our guide on removing apps from Facebook. Canv.as Is The New Image Board From The Founder Of 4Chan–Invites Inside

After all the trolling, the hating, the hacking and the lulz-ing it must be hard for anyone to not know about 4chan. Yes, the same 4chan that allegedly gave birth to Anonymous (although I personally maintain that the image board is just a dumping ground for untargeted hate by the rest of the internet, and 4chan soaks it up because… well because it’s 4chan and they largely do things for the lulz) and the same 4chan that is the creator of mostly every meme on the internet right now such as Lolcats and the Rage Comics.

Canvas

However, 4chan is also full of extremely terrible images and pornography, making it unsuitable for children or those with a poor hearts or bowel movements. It is also an especially fertile breeding ground for those who wish to do unlawful things online. This is because it is very easy to be anonymous on 4chan. The image board does not store its images indefinitely on the servers and thus has no archive of all the discussions that go on there. Stuff that may (and allegedly has) caused a lot of harm in real life.

So Moot (the founder of 4chan whose real identity is Christopher Poole) decided to make a better image board system one that took all the good points of 4chan (relative anonymity, fast posting, instant remixing of content) and threw away the questionable points (not safe for work/lunch images, complete anonymity) and put in a few fun parts (stickers!) to create Canv.as.

Canv.as is a new community that compels you to participate actively right from day one. Activity is extremely high and lurking is not as much fun here. Even the act of likinga post or even sharing a post, per se demands some amount of activity on your part, as explained later. The jokes range from hilarious to vile to what-in-the-world-is-this-and-why-am-i-looking-at-it (although admittedly not as bad as 4chan). It is the bright artsy little sister to 4chan and she’s just getting warmed up with her creativity, jokes, memes and wants every sticker you have.

Lots of Stickers!

Stickers are the refined response to Facebook’s bland Likebutton, in my opinion. They are also the only way you can hide or flag a post. Canv.as’ stickers are round symbols of a small range of human expression viz. =D, D=, =O, LOL, ?, <3, #1, Cookie, and the inimitable gentleman with a handlebar wearing a monocle. These stickers are to be dragged and stuckinto posts which elicit the appropriate expression. As the community has expanded, a few thumb-rules for a few select stickers follow:-

If it has a cute girl or a   cat in an appropriately cute pose give it a <3.
If it has a moustache and a monocle somewhere give it the appropriate monocle-moustache salute.
If it has #1 anywhere blindly give it a #1.

Canv.as 101: Guess what stickers this post is going to get?

So, in summary, what is Canv.as beyond the image-board part?

Very good question, internet newbie. Unfortunately, it’s also a question that cannot be answered in a few words since, well it is an image-board and you know the old adage about pictures, right? There was no way we could classify 4chan and the other slew of image boards under the overarching banner of image boards(I know what I just did and I am hoping you will keep quiet about it before everyone gets to know. Hush!). Canv.as is a natural progression of the 4chan of yesterday as a meme factory.

A lovely way to introduce people to Canv.as!

One of the reasons for its label as a meme factorythat I easily applied is that it is extremely easy to change or add things to a picture on it. The remixbutton opens up a toned-down Photoshop on-site for you to play with, complete with layer importing. It is extremely simple to use and its always-available nature makes users want to change an image to their liking.

It is extremely dynamic (the memes there hardly stay for more than half a day), but is not completely original as yet, mostly because the /b/-tards (users of the 4chan random image board) feel like dumping the memes from 4chan back there on a day-to-day basis and also because many people prefer to have yesteryears’ memes have a short run for free karma.

Necessary Minecraft Post

So amidst the general son-i-am-disappoints and One does not simply QWOP/walk into Mordorgifs, there are also draw yourself, especially if you are a bad artistthreads, and threads that mostly constitute adding moustaches and monocles to every upper-lip and left eye one finds (respectively).

It is an endearingly interactive group much more interactive than 4chan could have ever been, and it allows you to maintain relative anonymity. What’s not to like?

So if you wish to participate in this new melting pot of pop-cultures, comment on this thread with a request for a Canv.as invite. We have plenty to give away!

Facebook Now Displays Friend Tagging Suggestions Without @

For quite sometime, has borrowed several features from . One of them has been the @ referral to a friend in a post or in a comment. The name suggestion feature allowed users to tag friends in their updates or in a comment.

facebook

However, it looks like Facebook is now doing away with the @ mentality by showing friend name suggestions while you type. For example, you can now refer to a friend by simply typing their name without the @ sign as seen in the screenshot below.

Facebook Name Suggestions Without @

The new change might be user centric and not available to all users. However, it does add a simple way to refer to friends on Facebook without having to go through that extra step (read adding @).

This though could also be annoying for users because Facebook brings the suggestion up when you type 2-4 characters and if it is part of the name of your friend. However, it disappears as you type further.

Are you seeing this new name suggestions in Facebook? Do you think it is good or bad? Do let me know through your comments.

Update: According to @jatinsapra – Tagging Suggestion without "@" appears when u type first character in Upper case & then when you are done typing first name.

Osama Dead – Censored Video Leaked Wikileaks Video Facebook Spam

Yesterday, a Facebook scam was spreading across about a Shocking NEW VIDEO of Osama Bin Laden’s DEATH!!!. The video was obviously fake but it spread wildly across .

Osama Bin Laden Wikileaks Video Scam

Today morning, a new kind of scam is spreading on Facebook where another fake Osama Bin Laden video is being circulated on Facebook. The new spam is spreading with the text; "Watch the Osama Shoot Down video – Osama Dead – Censored Video Leaked – Osama is dead, watch this exclusive CNN video which was censored by Obama Administration due to level of violence, a must watch. Leaked by Wikileaks."

Osama Bin Laden Death Video Fan Page

The scammers are using the name of the whistle blowing organization; , to make people think that the video is genuine. However, the video is a scam. Clicking on the link will take you to a fan page (which is being liked by more than 45K people right now) and ask you to complete a new 5 second security check before you can watch the video.

However, following the steps listed does nothing and the fan page will instead post a message to your wall and your friends with a link to the fan page. This Facebook scam is a bit different from yesterday as it does not ask users to fill out stupid surveys, but once this gets widespread it could exploit users differently.

Please be aware that this scam is also spreading under various other links including "Osama Bin Laden Execution Video", "Aljazira Newz – Ossama Biin Ladden Raid Video Scam" and "Shocking NEW VIDEO of Osama Bin Ladens DEATH!!!" among others. Do not click any link that claims to show you Osama Bin Laden’s videos or pictures, it is all a sham. I believe that this scam might be spreading in various other ways too and might go on for next few weeks.

As a precautionary measure, always check which applications you use and remove unwanted or suspicious ones. Osama Bin Death Video Scam Spreading on Facebook

Yesterday marked a big day in world history where the FBIs most wanted terrorist was killed in a US attack. However, it looks like several scammers are now taking advantage of the situation and spreading fake videos on about Osama Bin Laden’s death.

Osama Bin Laden Death Video Facebook Scam

Naked Security is reporting that the new Facebook scam is spreading virally with the message "Shocking NEW VIDEO of Osama Bin Ladens DEATH!!!". The message claims that it has access to banned video footage of Osama Bin Lanen’s death.

This scam is similar to the recent Justin Bieber scam, Miley Cyrus scam, teen from Egypt commits suicide scam and girl killed herself after dad posted on here wall scam. The modus operandi of all these scams are similar and they entice users to click on a link and then ask them to fill a survey while posting an update to their wall.

It is best to avoid clicking on such links because the video is 100% fake and the US government has not yet released any pictures or videos of the said incident. Please stay safe and spread this message on Facebook.

As a precautionary measure, always check which applications you use and remove unwanted or suspicious ones. If you aren’t sure how to do it, you can always check our guide on removing apps from Facebook. OMG Can’t Believe Justin Beiber Did This To A Girl Spam Spreading

It looks like scamsters love to use celebrities to spread a widespread scam on . A new one doing the rounds right now is a scam which is spreading with the text "OMG Can’t Believe Justine Beiber Did This To A Girl".

Justin Bieber

The scam is just like previous Facebook scams where scammers spread messages like Miley Cyrus Sick Video. As always there is no such video about Justin Bieber doing anything to a girl and the scammers have also cleverly misspelt his surname.

Clicking on the link will ask you to fill out surveys which will make the scammers money and then take you to a video which does not exist at all. Be careful about what you share on Facebook and what links  you click.

As a precautionary measure, always check which applications you use and remove unwanted or suspicious ones. If you aren’t sure how to do it, you can always check our guide on removing apps from Facebook.
