Don’t use heavy javascript widgets

A site’s performance is based on the amount of time it needs to load on a person’s browser and am glad to say that I chucked of 5 seconds of load time by doing away with the most time consuming widgets on my site.

The two which I removed was Mybloglog and Technorati latest blog reactions, after I removed this my site loaded 5 seconds more faster than earlier.

Why does this happen?

Both Mybloglog and Technorati are used by a heavy number of users and their servers are unable to sustain such heavy loads and respond slowly to them. After they are not Google or Microsoft to have a array of servers to adhere to user requests.

In those circumstances I am doing away with those widgets and also with a few other tracking systems which though I rarely use but make my site load slower, I would rather go with a single traffic tracking program and chuck off the rest.

The rest assured I will make the site load under 10 seconds with the optimizations.

Techie Buzz gets a facelift

With the last design I did for Techie Buzz, I did realize that the site was too cluttered and had to do another facelift. So here is another design for Techie Buzz that I loved from the moment I started doing it.

It is professional and more organized now than ever before. The idea is to keep the site unique from others and though its not unique it has a better user interface right now.

I am really happy with what I could come up with but hoping that your views and opinions will help me improve it, so head to the comments form and let me know your views about the new design. I am open to learn more about it.

Just as a footnote I am both happy to take on professional plugin work as well as professional theme work so you can always use the contact form to let me know if you need anything to be done.

Disable or Enable hotkey close for Firefox last tab

There are many a times when I have closed Firefox in a hurry while using the hotkey Ctrl + W though I never intended to do so. It’s quite annoying at times and then I have to restart Firefox which is slow at times and go to history and load the last page. Even though this can be done by session restore I would rather not use it when I cleanly close Firefox.

There is a neat little trick though that allows you to disable this hotkey for the last tab with the extension Tab Mix Plus.

Using this extension I can disable the hotkey for the last tab which means I am forced to closed the last tab using the close button in Firefox. This tip is also intended for those who are already using Tab Mix Plus and want to enable the hotkey for the last tab and could not find any solution.

For those who are still not using the Tab Mix Plus extension you can download the extension from the link below.

Download Tab Mix Plus Firefox extension.

Getting back to the trick now, once you have the extension installed you can now enable or disable the hotkey based on your preference by following the instructions below.

Get your web hosting information

Finding a good web hosting is quite a headache as you have to check the downtimes of the servers, how good their customer support is etc. I have been using Dreamhost for over a year and a half and have found them to be pretty good what with an enormous amount of space, bandwidth more than a TB I have had never have had to worry about any thing at all.

But finding the right information is not that easy and word of mouth works pretty well. But what if you are new and want to know more about the hosting, trying to find resources can get hard for beginners. There is site called web hosting information which provides you with all the information you need to know about web site hosting.

You can find interesting articles on different types of hosting including budget hosting, business hosting, unix hosting, reseller hosting, windows hosting and much more. The content basically is more about benefits of different hosting which can help you make a decision to choose which type of hosting is best suited for you.

You can also learn more about domain names with a variety of posts from benefits of having your own domain name, to information on registering a domain name, selling your domain name etc.

If you are a newbie then this site is a nice place to start gathering information about domains and different types of hosting services before you can start your own website.

You can also search for different hosting providers with search criteria based on price, amount of space required and platforms.

So if you want to know more about hosting then you should give this site a try.

Gmail marks Google Alerts Mail as spam

The spam filters of Gmail is one of the best of all the email providers and beats Yahoo and Hotmail outright but I do have to sometimes check my Spam folder for legitimate emails being filtered as Spam and have at times retrieved some emails from friends in the Spam folder.

Today while I was doing a routine check I came across a Google Alerts mail landing up in the spam folder.

google-alerts-spam

This is probably the first time I have ever seen a company marking their own service emails as spam.

Search smartly with Firefox search

Many a times on different web pages we have to search for similar words. The Firefox search is quite easy and pressing a “/” without the quotes displays a search box where you can type in what you want to search for simple and easy.

Now what happens when you want to search for the same term on another page and you want to get rid of typing the search term over and over again. With the “/” trick you have to keep typing in the search term again and again for each web page and it really gets annoying when you do such searches 100 times a day.

Instead of doing the repetitive entering of the search term there is a neat little hidden goody with Firefox (I love Firefox) that allows you to do that.

Firefox has a feature where you can search for your previously searched term using the shortcut keys Ctrl + G. Once you press the key combinations Firefox will try and find the key term on the current page and highlight it for you.

This is simply awesome as it saves me a step while I am trying to search for something on multiple web sites.

Manage Multiple Blogs Private Beta

Ok so after some more WordPress hard work I am finally announcing a private beta of my latest WordPress plugin called Manage Multiple Blogs. Manage Multiple Blogs is just what is says it allows you to manage multiple blogs from within the admin panel.

So If you are a blogger who has more than one blog then you should definitely use this one, as this will allow you to post to multiple blogs, manage your categories in multiple blogs, post drafts, edit drafts, publish posts and psst should I say this… manage and reply to comments from multiple blogs just like Better Comments Manager does right now all from ONE single blog (future support coming in for blogger blogs that too from within WordPress admin panel), suggestion for comments management was from Ronald Huereca.

The plugin does lack some features and may have lots of bugs, that’s why I want to run a private beta. The plugin is as FREE as it can get but not BUG free yet so I want to test it out with a few users before I can release it. This is the first time anyone has run a private beta for a WordPress plugin, but since this is so huge one I wanted to release this plugin only after I have got appropriate feedbacks and have fixed the bugs.

You may have to run a wee bit of test cases and report the bugs to me, but heck I run 4 blogs and it’s been a very useful tool for me.

This private beta is open to all, all you have to do is send me a email at wpplugin@techie-buzz.com or leave a comment saying that you are interested in using this as a private beta software and will let me know any bugs you face.

As a matter of fact I am posting this post from another blog, that’s the power of MMB ;-)

All your comments, feedbacks and suggestions welcome.
