I know the title is a little weird, but the competion between the top three in search advertising is such. Google and Microsoft have spent billions of dollars to buy new ad companies. Yahoo too is not far behind, but surprise of surprise how does Yahoo get some of its advertisers, any guesses.

By advertising with Ad words, isn’t it funny that Yahoo itself is using Google Ad Words as a platform to sell their advertising platform. I am not sure how the Yahoo guys agreed to do this but this is a total irony when they are competing against each other.

I believe that when you are competing with each other you will try to promote and get more advertisers for your network but promoting yourself on your rivals network is quite hillarious. This shows one thing that Google Ad network has far more reach than its rivals and brings in more clicks to advertisers or does it?

Check out the screen shot below.

Yahoo Advertisement on google search

Have you ever seen any such rival networks advertisement? I have not come across any Yahoo Ads yet so am not sure if Google advertises on Yahoo ;).

Do share your opinion about this.

Create Cool Web2.0 Buttons with My cool button

Web2.0 logos have become a fad now and I see many websites making use of Web2.0 logos. Even Techie Buzz spots one :). But were buttons far away. Well lets say you do not even have to use photoshop to create the buttons its that easy. My cool button is a site allows you to create web2.0 buttons with ease and the output is quite good too.

There are only four simple steps to create a Web2 button using My cool button;

1. Setup Size

Here you have to setup the size for the button the maximum size of the button is 200 pixels.

My cool button setup size

My take: They should have a feature where a user can add in customized size.

2. Setup Color

Here you setup the color for the button, you can choose from various pre defined colors, or also make use of a color pallete to choose your background color from. You can also directly enter the hex value for the color

My Cool Button Setup Color

My take: Pretty good as it allows to choose a wide range of colors

History of Backups

This a very rare chance that a computer user may not have heard of the word backup. Backup today has become a very integral part of safe keeping your data. There have been cases as devastating as the Business Magazine losing its entire June issue because of data loss.

Backups save you a great deal. Just suppose your entire database crashed and you do not have any backups of your data, or your hard drive crashed and you lose your entire data. The importance about backup has been well documented by numerous site and many people do religiously backup their data.

But how about knowing the history of backups. Maxim Yurin from SoftLogica has created a site dedicated for the purpose of displaying the history of backup.

The site goes through the different backup devices used by different genrations of people dating back to 1951. It is quite interesting to know how backup has evolved over the last 56 years.

Mxim tells us how backups were made in early years using big reels of magnetic tapes and paper. I bet many of you may have used a Floppy drive and seen how easily they used to get corrupted. I have a collection of over 200 floppy drives which do not work since early days, I plan to put it some good use soon.

RIP Addressbar, Link love killed you

Search Engines. Feed Readers. Digg. Stumble Upon. Social Bookmarking sites. Start pages. Link Love. Referrals. Trackbacks. Pingbacks and more.

Ok I am not talking gibberish :). What I was highlighting is that these are many of the ways readers land up on your site. But what about the age old method of typing in your URL into the address bar. It has almost been long forgotten and very rarely do users use this option.

The plain Jane address bar is the most convenient yet rarely use option for a user to visit your site. Have you ever seen more than 50% of your readers coming in using the address bar. I doubt that many of you would have seen this.

But why is this happening?

To call it an information overload would be an understatement. Over the past few years websites have sprung up like anything and all in different niches. Technorati is tracking more than 10 million blogs. Feed burner is feeding around 3 quarters of a million feeds.

Now those are just blogs or those who have registered to them. And there are more than 80 million websites today. So that’s more than information overload.

What Google wants you to Avoid

I was doing about to search for avoiding duplicate content with wordpress when I saw the suggestions that Google gave. Check out the screen shot below

Google Avoiding suggestions

The suggestions clearly indicate that plagiarism is a very big problem and many people are trying to find ways to overcome that. The other suggestions are also widely searched by people like avoiding pregnancy and avoiding divore. It is funny that a search engine can help people avoid those things.
