This is a bit off topic but its about a journey where I realised my dreams so would like to share it with my readers. This story is not fictional and contains the true journey of my life. Do let me know if you have your dreams come true, i would love to feature it on another one of my sites and this as well.

It was almost a year since the reality of coming to the United States of America had been offered to me, which made me more than just excited because it wasn’t just an opportunity but a dream I had had for many a years.

The lure to come and work to the US was there since I started working and gradually it was turning out to be a dream that I wanted to achieve though not at any costs but with my hard work and dedication in what I did. I joined a US company in 2004, which had their off shore development unit in India and that’s when things turned around for me. I worked hard, and got the due recognition from the company which inspired me to work harder and harder.

Then came a day when the CEO of my company told me that he would take me to the US to work for him there, and that was when I did realize that my dream is going to come true.

It was not a very pleasant year though and I had to run around to get a lot of things done including applying for my passport ironically which was the first thing I should have done when I had the dream.

Many more months and paper work later I was here standing in a queue to get my visa to the US. The process was smooth and I walked out from there, becoming another one of those persons who could work in the US, all smiling and triumphant at the thought that I am one of the few lucky people who get to do this.

A couple months later I had got my tickets. I was happy and relieved that the time had come, though not as happy to leave a home where I lived with my parents all my life, leaving the luxuries of having my food cooked and my clothes laundered behind. Leaving my girl friend and all the times we shared together, never to spend those weekends with her anymore.

It was all too much for me to leave and I even had thoughts to cancel the trip but the courage that my parents and girl friend gave me lifted my spirits and prepared me for my journey seven seas across the globe.

The D-day finally arrived and I had been all packed, and ready to spend the next 20 hours travelling across the globe.

Emotional feelings were exchanged between me and my loved ones before I got into the check-in area of the Mumbai international airport. I was sad to leave them but was rejoiced by the thought that I would get to see them in a year’s time.

As soon as I got into the check-in area, I said to myself “Man I am going to be in the US”.

The journey

I had a colleague along with me who was joining the US office, so at least I had some company. The journey was about 18 hours with a stop over at Abu Dhabi.

We changed over at Abu Dhabi and within an hour we were on the plane heading to JFK. This plane was quite bigger and better than the last one; it had to be for a 14 and half hour long journey.

On the plane all I could do was eating, watching movies and reading, sleeping was least on my mind with the excitement and I barely slept for 3 hours.

As the captain’s announcement came that we were about an hour from landing JFK I got all excited but all I could see were white clouds and then the descent started, wow I had never seen a place as beautiful as these, big houses with lawns, nice roads, buildings everywhere, and more baseball grounds than the amount of time I had spent watching it on TV all my life.

Finally when we landed I again said to myself, “Dude!! You are finally in New York”.

Sending emails to users and having them click on scam links to get bank and credit card information is a thing of the past. Here is the newest scam from probably a clever hacker. This is really a top scam that I have ever seen hit the internet.

This is a trojan known as Trojan.Kardphisher which attacks the users at startup. Once the trojan is installed on your system it starts up with the computer and shows you a Windows Activation Screen where it asks you for your credit card information.

Trojan Kardphisher scam

What a way to fool people, I bet many users may have already fallen to this pretty little thing. Please do not activate your copy of Windows if you are being asked for your credit card details. Microsoft will NEVER ask you for your credit card details.

Inside Adsense Blog have come up with a new post which tells adsense publishsers to avoid encouraging users from clicking on adsense ads.

The new guidelines state that you cannot place ads in

- Close proximity of Macromedia Flash Games
- Under pop-ups or download prompts
- Near site navigation controls on your page, such as drop downs or menu links

The third one is interestingly seen on many a blogs, and I do agree they tend to confuse the readers as to being links from within the sites. But these are tricks of the trade and allow publishers to earn more, nonetheless it is unwise to ignore guidelines from the Adsense team as it may have serious implications as such, which may also end up you getting banned from adsense.

This is another one after they strictly asked publishers not to place ads next to images.

For me Adsense has been the biggest revenue earner yet so I would not be too keen to take the risk, but there are many other ways in which you can blend in Adsense ads into your site to make more money. Google has just taken out one for now, don’t know how many more they will detect in future.

Let me know how much you would counter such changes through your comments.

Before I can go on with this tutorial I wanted you all to know that you require a medium level of expertise in either linux or a database.

What is a cronjob?

If you have been a windows user then you may have heard of a scheduled task which you can run on your windows PS. For the non geeks a scheduled task is some process you have arranged to take place at a specific time.

For e.g. A meeting you have scheduled at 3.30 PM for every friday to go over previous weeks tasks and suggest next weeks priorities

The meeting has to take place and two or more persons have agreed to it. The place has been decided and the agenda is set, so it scheduled to happen. The meeting may occur recurring over different time spans thus being a recurring schedule.

The same way a cronjob is a scheduled task on Linux based system that has to run at specific time at specific intervals to do a specific task. A cronjob uses shell scripts which is a language used by Linux system to run tasks.

A shell script can make use of any other languages such as Java, PHP etc to collect output.

What is a Trigger?

A trigger according to dicitionary.com means anything, as an act or event, that serves as a stimulus and initiates or precipitates a reaction or series of reactions.

In relation to database a trigger is a task that occurs on insert, update or delete tasks within a table. So in short whenever someone adds a new comment, or your sub editor adds a new post or someone deletes a post from your database you can have a trigger to do something. For instance email you the comment or email you the new post, or in case of deletion backup the post to a new temp table.

An intersting post at Lifehack.org caught my attention. Though Google runs their own poll to users as to what they like, I was quite drawn towards what Lifehack had put up as to adding new features to Google products

In Gmail

  1. Sort features
  2. Two panes
  3. Dragging.
  4. Drag-n-drop and batch uploads.
  5. Progress bar.
  6. Better integration with Gcal.
  7. Unthread.
  8. Notification.
  9. Open emails
  10. Read receipt.
  11. Message size.
  12. Off-line reading.

You can find the features which you can choose for Gmail here where you can even ask Gmail to do your laundry. I did ask them to do so :D.
