I just recently helped a friend move from WordPress.com blog to a self-hosted blog. As I was implementing little tweaks in it I figured that it will be great to have a list of things I did so others can use it too. Here are the tweaks in no particular order.

Although most of these tweaks are aimed at a new WordPress blog, I still have a couple or more in this list that I need to implement in ShanKri-la. I hope you will find one or two that you can use too even if you have blogged for a while.

1. WWW or no WWW: It is best to make up your mind to use www or not in your URL. Once you have made up your mind, you should set it up to redirect so whatever a reader types in, they will be redirected to the one of your choice.

Yesterday I had written about DocSyncer a utility which would allow you to synchronize your local documents with  your Google Docs account. I was lucky enough to get a invite to use DocSyncer and here are my first impressions about the utility.

The first thing you would have to do once you login into your DocSyncer account is to grant access to DocSyncer to access your Google Docs account. This is important as without this you will not be able to use DocSyncer.

After you have finished granting the privileges you will be asked to download a small software that will synchronize documents from your desktop to your Google Docs account.

Once you have installed the software it will show up in your system tray. The tiny little application is responsible for synchronizing your documents with Google Docs account. Clicking on the icon will launch a browser where you can sign in into your DocSyncer account. Once you do that you will see a welcome screen stating that you documents are being synchronized.

Well its Friday again the day of the week everyone eagerly looks forward to. Starting the weekend with a hearty laugh is what we prefer to do at Techie Buzz. Here are some definitions that will make you laugh. The definitions are not be taken seriously (pun intended).

• Project Manager is a person who thinks nine women can deliver a baby in one month.
• Developer is a person who thinks it will take 18 months to deliver a baby.
• Onsite Coordinator is one who thinks single woman can deliver nine babies in one month.
• Client is the one who doesn’t know why he wants a baby.
• Marketing Manager is a person who thinks he can deliver a baby even if no man and woman are available.
• Resource Optimization Team thinks they don’t need a man or woman; They’ll produce a child with zero resources.
• Documentation Team thinks they don’t care whether the child is delivered, they’ll just document 9 months.
• Quality Auditor is the person who is never happy with the PROCESS to produce a baby.

And lastly…

Tester is a person who always tells that this is not the right baby.

If you use your laptop in multiple places you may know how hard it is to keep changing network settings over and over again. For example you may use the laptop at your home, office or even at your local start bucks coffee shop. Every time you go to a new place there is a new network configuration you have to setup.

This gets quite tedious over time and specifically when you have to setup a manual IP (Internet Protocol) address to access the Internet connection. I definitely have had a lot of problems earlier when I was in India as neither my office nor my home connection used DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which automatically assigns dynamic IP address to your PC.

Well many of us cringe when they hear about Internet Explorer but the real fact is that it performs better when memory comes into the question. Nirmal has done an extensive test on browsers to come up the fact that Firefox uses up the most memory among browsers.

I have been using IE7 along with Firefox for a long time. The reason I started using both the browsers was because I started up a new account for Google AdSense which could not be accessed within the same browser.

I had used the beta version of IE7 before for quite some time and I can tell you all the beta versions were crap. The browser either crashed or did something it was not supposed to.

The final version of IE7 is much more stable and performs much better than most of the other browsers. Well what more we are now going to get nextG of Internet Explorer Browser which is now officially called Internet Explorer 8.

Google Docs is one of the most popular services used to edit Word and Excel documents online. You can easily download all the documents from Google Docs to your local machine and vice versa.
