Virus Alert!! Merogo Worm is Searching for Symbians

Guys over at F-Secure labs have reported a new worm in the market – the Merogo SMS worm. This virus spreads through SMS and is named Trojan:SymbOS/MerogoSMS. It works only for s60 v3 devices and is completely incompatible with any other symbian device.

It deploys itself by sending an SMS to every contact in your phonebook. The receiver will see a long message in chinese with a link in it. If you click on that link, you’ll download the infected file and it will once again start sending messages. It also sends SMS to many premium numbers.

Traditionally, no one can install an unsigned app in an S60 device. This worm happens to be a signed app which contains many unsigned apps within it. It installs them when it is being installed itself.

F-Secure is trying very hard to contain this virus as no reports of attacks outside China have been observed. But even then, beware of any Chinese messages.

Opera Mini 5 On iPhone Video [Demos]

Now that has submitted the Opera mini app to the Apple app store, several people might have their fingers crossed, because if the Opera app does get approved, it would mean that iPhone users get to use one of the best mobile web browsers on planet Earth.

If you have no clue about how Opera Mini 5 will work on the iPhone, you can take a look at a video released by Opera, which showcases it’s features, which include:

  • A really fast browser for iPhone.
  • Opera Speed Dial
  • Fast browsing even on a 2G network.
  • Easy tab management, better scrolling and more.

The video also has comparison between the Opera browser and iPhone’s native Safari browser, where Opera Mini is obviously the fastest one. Guess what Apple might have to say about that.

China Blocking Some Google Search Results

Yesterday, Google started redirecting users to and displayed uncensored results to all the users. A annoyed user also wrote in how Google had blocked access to from within China.

RIP Google China

However, its China’s turn now as some reports are flowing in that the Chinese government has started blocking certain search results in China. Earlier today, ZDNet got a statement from a Google executive to confirm the banning of certain search results.

"Certain terms seem to be being blocked by the firewall," said a Google spokesperson, referring to the ‘Great Firewall of China’, the popular nickname for Golden Shield.

However, there were no reports on which specific terms were being banned by the Chinese Government. Popular Google services like and Blogger have suffered a complete ban in China for quite sometime now, and it looks like Google’s web search and image search are headed in the same direction.

Right now Google’s Mainland China service availability page displays full access to Google web search and image search. However, that page has not been updated since March 21st, so expect to see some more red cross-marks appearing on the page soon.

Apple Offering Contract-Free iPhone For $500-$700

Apple has begun selling unsubsidized unlocked to consumers without the 2 year contract through the Apple Store. The 8GB version of iPhone 3G costs $499, 16GB 3GS will cost $599 and 32GB 3GS will cost $699.

It looks like Apple has finally begun selling unlocked iPhone through the app store. This move may be to counter the flurry of based devices hitting the US markets which are also sold unlocked with out any carrier subsidies.

The new development was spotted by Gizmodo through a leaked Apple document which states that customers will not be required to verify their account through AT&T and will be able to use it contract free. The document also states that users may only buy a single unit of iPhone per day.

The document was reportedly updated on March 22nd, however, there is no news yet as to when Apple will actually start selling the unlocked devices, and whether or not it will be available at locations other than the Apple Store.

Google also sells a unlocked version of online for about the same price, so this move by Apple might be to counter that and enter the unsubsidized market. Would you buy an unlocked iPhone or would you prefer to buy a unlocked Android based phone instead?
