Craft of Gods Open Beta Event From April 2nd

If you like Slavic mythology, Russian dev studio Cyberdemons’ new Massively Multiplayer game Craft of Gods should catch your fancy. Set in a huge gameworld (which is a redundant statement, considering that this is an MMOG!) Craft of Gods will cater to the crowds that enjoy Realm versus Realm (RvR) or Player versus Player (PvP) gaming with huge battles and smaller duels constantly peppering the servers of this game. The game will also contain different elements of Player versus Environment (PvE) gameplay, possibly just to increase the level and little else. The developers have released details regarding an Open Beta event that will run for four days. This could be one of the last times you can play this game in Beta before its public release!

Craft of Gods

With 6 different races in 3 different factions (Light, Neutral and Darkness) and complete customization with 210 different skills spread over 14 schools (phew!) this is destined to be one of the larger MMOGs with a large presence in Europe. In this game you can also become a Demigod gaining special powers and skills within your realm.

If you wish to try this game’s beta, you will need to register here on the Kalicanthus website  and you will receive a beta key. The key will be valid as soon as the servers are online. The servers will come alive on April 2nd at 2:30 PM CET and will go offline on April 6th at 2:30 PM CET. Do let us know how the game is when you do play it!

WikiLeaks Promises to Reveal Pentagon Murder Cover-up: US Government Feels Threatened

WikiLeaks Controversy is not something new to WikiLeaks – a website notorious for leaking sensitive governmental, corporate, organizational, or religious documents. In the past, they have leaked Guantánamo Bay procedures, documents belonging to the Church of Scientology, contents of Sarah Palin’s e-mail account and internet censorship lists.

Obviously, over the years WikiLeaks has managed to anger quite a few people, organizations and governments around the world. In fact, the US Army even considered attacking WikiLeaks in the past. According to The Register, a 2008 report by the Army Counterintelligence Center, classified Secret, called for a mole hunt and prosecutions to undermine potential sources’ trust in WikiLeaks.

Due to fundraising problems, WikiLeaks had to close shop for several months. However, it bounced back in February ’10 and is once again courting trouble. WikiLeaks has promised to reveal a Pentagon murder cover-up at the US National Press Club on April 5. Although, very little information is available about the nature of the information available to WikiLeaks, it is definitely sensitive enough to prompt the US government into action.

A flurry of recent updates on the official WikiLeaks Twitter account suggests that they are currently under an aggressive US and Icelandic surveillance operation. Here are the recent tweets by WikiLeaks in chronological order:

  • WikiLeaks is currently under an aggressive US and Icelandic surveillance operation. Following/photographing/filming/detaining.
  • If anything happens to us, you know why: it is our Apr 5 film. And you know who is responsible.
  • Two under State Dep diplomatic cover followed our editor from Iceland to on Thursday.
  • One related person was detained for 22 hours. Computer’s seized. That’s
  • We know our possession of the decrypted airstrike video is now being discussed at the highest levels of US command.
  • If you know more about the operations against us, contact
  • We have been shown secret photos of our production meetings and been asked specific questions during detention related to the airstrike.
  • We have airline records of the State Dep/CIA tails. Don’t think you can get away with it. You cannot. This is WikiLeaks.

In the past, WikiLeaks has played a pivotal role in exposing wrongdoing. It has managed to remain true to its principle of only publishing documents of political, diplomatic, historical or ethical interest. Over the years, it has managed to gain both respect and reputation for making a positive impact.

At the moment, the big question is, did WikiLeaks byte off more than it can chew? It will be interesting to observe how events unfold over the next few days. Stay tuned for more updates.

Update: A possibly related slightly older tweet reveals a bit more about the current situation:

Finally cracked the encryption to US military video in which journalists, among others, are shot. Thanks to all who donated $/CPUs.

OfficeTalk: Enterprise Version of Twitter From Microsoft

Microsoft is testing a microblogging platform called OfficeTalk which is presumed to appeal to the business and enterprise world. The tests and the project hosting are being managed at Office Labs which is Microsoft’s innovation lab.
The current technology of ADO.NET offered by Microsoft is capable of providing this service on-premise. This would mean that the microblogging server, clients and all processing are managed locally on the network. The data being served over the network is locally available and the organization has total control over it.

On this test launch, the OfficeTalk  project page at OfficeLabs says,

OfficeTalk is a concept test to explore the value of microblogging in the enterprise. OfficeTalk is deployed internally at Microsoft and has seen over 10,000 visitors and hundreds of messages posted daily. We’re now making OfficeTalk available to a few customers in a small pilot test.

The features on offer are exactly what you can expect from a microblogging service. There is a character limit of 140, users have profiles and post messages which are visible by their friends, to read someone’s messages, you can follow them and search for people you want to follow. The subsequent messages appear as threaded comments and there is an in-built URL shortener.

The only question here is that why is Microsoft offering this as a strictly on-premise service and not as a cloud service? Microsoft should clearly see that the service has a huge potential if put to the cloud and offering it as an on-premise service is harnessing only half of that power. Then again, this is just a testing phase. We expect to see OfficeTalk soon as a cloud based SaaS.

Android vs. Maemo

Touchscreen Smartphones have become massively popular since Apple introduced its iPhone.

In the last year or so, many touchscreen devices have come into the market. The growth of smartphones has led to development of better mobile operating systems.

Today, let’s compare two of the most powerful mobile OS: Android and Maemo .

Both Android and Maemo are Linux based operating systems but there is definitely a big difference between the two. Maemo   is a fully Debian based distro while Android is a solitary kernel with a few programs like Dalvik virtual machine and Sqlite database written on top of it.

Maemo`s ability to run largely-unmodified linux packages is the main difference compared to Android.

Maemo uses established desktop technology like X11 and GTK+ and is a lot easier to port existing applications. Some of the open-source apps, which are already ported to Maemo, include MPlayer, Pidgin, Gnumeric and Abiword. Android on the other hand runs applications in a Java-like virtual machine and hence the burden on authors is heavier, as they have to re-write the application from scratch.

For game developers, Maemo offers a common start-up and settings screen, and a framework called Osso-games-startup. This library has made the work of game developers a lot easier as they can now reduce the common start-up screen coding and concentrate more on game programming.

As far as strategic position is concerned, Android holds an edge over Maemo. The reason being, Nokia alone backs Maemo (featuring in four devices:   Nokia N770, N800, N810, N900 by the end of the year) , while Android is backed by  Google, Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC, Acer and others (featuring in more than 18 devices). Maemo has a big disadvantage here. The best apps are going to be built for Android and iPhone because those will have the most users. However it seems that Maemo   is  more suitable for larger devices   like MIDs and netbooks.

The fate of Maemo may change drastically when Maemo imports Moblin OS next year. This new OS is to be called Meego and might very well change the future of Mobile computing.

How to Run Deb Files on Android

Android is one of the most powerful OS available today. We can even run debian applications on Android. To do so, ghostwalker at androidfanatic has made a custom Debian Shell for Android. The process is quite easy and it helps you to boot into a Debian shell which expands your reach to many new softwares. Just follow the steps below :

  • You need to download a modded firmware update if you are using G1. Get it here.
  • save the file on the SDcard
  • Boot into recovery mode (home+power) then press alt+s to apply changes
  • Download the installer for Debian Shell here.
  • unzip the file and copy the folder debian to SDcard’s root.
  • Go to /sdcard/debian through the terminal
  • Type su
  • Type chmod 4755 *
  • run the installer by typing
  • Type bootdeb to mount and boot the debian system.

That’s it. This little mod is all it takes to run deb files on your Android.

Note: This mod does not in any way change your phone’s OS or harms it in any way.

TurboHercules Charges IBM With Another Antitrust Complaint

TurboHercules, a French firm dealing in Open Source Mainframe software has filed its antitrust complaint on IBM which is the third one in the line for IBM.  TurboHercules alleges IBM that it ships it’s proprietary Operating System software with its mainframe hardware. This clears out any competition IBM faces from small competitors and makes it the mainframe Enterprise Giant.

Roger Bowler, the chairman of TurboHercules has remarked on this saying,

This conduct prevents TurboHercules from providing its product to mainframe customers desiring an open-source solution.

IBM has responded on this allegation alleging TurboHercules is trying to take advantage of IBM’s hardware and use it as their testing and development ground for their products.

IBM’s statement on this matter goes as,

TurboHercules is an ’emulation’ company that seeks a free ride on IBM’s massive investments in the mainframe by marketing systems that attempt to mimic the functionality of IBM mainframes.

Last year the U.S. Department of Justice had opened an antitrust case against IBM’s dominance in the mainframe market. IBM justifies this as the right to protect the investment they have made int their technologies.

Airtel Will Be Launching iPhone 3GS on Friday – Will Cost A Bomb

We knew that Airtel was preparing to launch iPhone 3GS in India, but we didn’t know the exact launch date. Now, Bharti Airtel’s official Twitter account has let it slip that it will be launching the latest iPhone handset on March 26. The handset will be available at Airtel authorized retail stores across India, including select Airtel Relationship Centres.

Airtel has also disclosed the Indian pricing for the iPhone 3GS. The 16GB model will cost Rs 35,000 ($780), while the 32GB model will cost Rs 41,500 ($910).

Needless to say, the pricing is outrageous for a locked handset, which will become outdated within a few months. But then again, no one really cares. Apple certainly doesn’t care about Indian consumers and merely treats it as a dumping ground. Airtel knows that the success or failure of iPhone won’ have a big impact on its bottom-line and is simply trying to leech as much as possible from Apple aficionados and mobile-enthusiasts. Thankfully, there are plenty of viable alternatives for Indian consumers. Sony Xperia X10 and Motorola Milestone (Droid), which are rumoured to be priced at around Rs 30,000, are just a couple of alternatives offering better value for money.

New Free Virus Removal Tool from McAfee – Fake Alert Stinger

flying_wasp [Windows Only] McAfee is well known for it’s antivirus software, and you usually have to pay for their protection. They offer the free Stinger tool to help people clean out PCs that have been crippled by virus and trojan attacks.

There is no installation required. Just download it and run it. It works on all Windows PCs as far as I know.

I normally download a fresh copy of Stinger onto a USB flash drive or CD before I go off to help my friends with bug problems.

In addition to the standard Stinger, there’s a new version of Stinger out now called FakeAlert Stinger. It’s designed to specifically target multiple varieties of the FakeAlert trojans, such as, Kryptik, AVP Security, Fakespypro, Winwebsec, Antivirus Soft and XPSpy.

FakeAlert applications are a form of ScareWare that pop up fake warnings which attempt to trick you into running their scans and buying their premium products. It’s a huge money-making scam that’s been very effective against new PC users.

Download McAfee Stinger and FakeAlert Stinger

Notes: There are many other antivirus and anti-malware tools that can help you clean up an infected PC. Last year, Keith wrote about an application which will Remove Fake Antivirus from Your System. If all else fails and the PC is really trashed, I’ve got an article describing how to Run AntiVirus on a PC That Will Not Boot.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

techiebuzzrecommendedsoftware1 There are two versions of McAfee Stinger. Both are very good, and there’s no reason not to use both of them when you need to clean up an infected PC. I have used Stinger for years and I’ve never had an issue with it. I only wish it was Open Source, so that more people could contribute to it’s effectiveness.

Techie Buzz Rating: 4/5 (Excellent)

Twitter Starts Enabling Contributors Feature on Multi-User Accounts

Twitter has come a long way since its inception. It began as a way to share your status updates with your friends. Now, it is being used for everything from organizing relief efforts to online marketing. Twitter has grown into a serious revenue mechanism for many organizations. Dell has led the way by raking in millions of dollars’ worth of sales through Twitter. Although Twitter was designed for single-user accounts, today a substantial portion of the popular Twitter accounts are actually multi-user accounts maintained by a dedicated team. Twitter acknowledged this a few months back and promised to introduce a new Contributors feature for businesses.

The Contributors feature is really simple. It adds the username of the person actually posting the updates to the tweet byline. This gives a face to big organizations and makes conversation more personal. After testing this feature for several months on the @twitter account, Twitter has finally begun rolling it out to multi user accounts. The SalesForce and Starbucks team are already enjoying this feature and others should get it soon.
