Photoshop’s Content Aware Fill Rant Finally Matches GIMP’s Age Old Feature

On one hand, when the whole Internet is going crazy about the new feature of  “Content Aware Fill” in the latest Photoshop available with Adobe CS5, Gimp, which has had this feature, is remaining quiet.

The latest feature in Photoshop was demoed by Photoshop product manager Bryan O’Neil Hughes. You can see the  Content Aware Fill preview video on Youtube. Basically, with this new feature, we can remove an object from an image safely. Photoshop will automatically create a background with a suitable fill.

Apart from that Photoshop features many new selection technologies and texture generation algorithms. According to the countdown on the homepage, the release is due 19 days from now.

Resynthesizer in Gimp has had this feature from a long time. Add the Gimp resynthesizer to your Gimp with the command:

sudo apt-get install gimp-resynthesizer

Joey at OMG!Ubuntu has posted images of how well this feature works in Gimp. The object removed here is a tree which is definitely harder to remove than regular shapes.

PS3 Latest Firmware Removes Support for Linux and Other OS

The latest firmware release for PS3 from Sony will remove the “Other OS” feature. The update is scheduled to arrive on the 1st of April. Do not go by that date because Sony has confirmed that this is not an April Fool’s Day joke.

The update which is scheduled to arrive on Thursday this week will not be mandatory though. It will be an optional upgrade but those using the older firmware will be devoid of many features of the latest 3.21 firmware. Sony says it has released this update for security concerns.

Though, after the PS3 hack by the famous iPhone hacker, this looks more like an insecurity concern.

For those going for this update,

  • You will not be able to use another OS on your PS3.
  • No more playbacks of unsupported formats like MKV.
  • No more interesting PS3 hack reports.
  • No more fun.

If you are planning on not using this update,

  • You will miss out on all the security Sony will probably talk about.
  • You will not be able to play the latest games requiring the latest firmware.
  • You will not be able to play Blu-ray discs.
  • You will not get access to PSN (PlayStation network) anymore.

Gaming consoles like PS3 are a power juice machine and are used in researches as well. The removal of Other OS feature will affect many more communities apart from gamers.

Nokia launches Ovi Music Unlimited in India

Nokia has announced its new Ovi Music Unlimited. It’s Nokia`s latest music service which has rebranded its predecessor, Comes With Music service. The launch of Ovi Music Unlimited also brought about a change in the name of Nokia Music Store’ to Ovi Music Store.

Even though the services seem to have been launched, the “Ovi Music Unlimited mobiles and prices” link points to Nokia Malaysia’s website, which indicates that the services are not fully accessible in India. I hope that it will not take much time to come to Indians.

Ovi Music Unlimited allows buyers of Ovi Music Unlimited phones to download just about any number of songs for a period of 12 months(probable duration). The songs can be any type starting from Bollywood hits, Indian classical to international numbers. However, Ovi Music Unlimited membership is not being sold separately- you need to have a compatible handset to subscribe to Ovi Music Unlimited.

Some of the handsets where Ovi Music Unlimited is compatible include Nokia N97, N97 Mini, Nokia 5530, Nokia 5233, Nokia N86, Nokia E71 and Nokia E72.

Kubuntu 10.04 and Lubuntu 10.04 Gets New Plymouth Theme

When Canonical’s “Self-Appointed Benevolent  Dictator for Life”, Mark Shuttleworth, announced the new branding of Ubuntu, many asked him if there is going to be new  branding  for other Ubuntu-derivatives like Kubuntu. Shuttleworth replied that there will be new brandings and that the designers at Canonical are working on that.

Now, a part of the new branding for Kubuntu 10.04 and Lubuntu 10.04 has  emerged  with the release of the new plymouth themes for both of them. Sadly, the new theme has not come in  Xubuntu 10.04 yet.

The new plymouth themes in both Kubuntu and Lubuntu are identical in design to that of Ubuntu. The only difference is the logo and the color.

Here are the new plymouth themes for Kubuntu and Lubuntu:

Kubuntu 10.04 Plymouth Theme
Lubuntu 10.04 Plymouth Theme

The Kubuntu plymouth theme is not final. As part of the new branding, new logos are being designed for Kubuntu. When the new logos are available, the logo that is used in the plymouth theme right now will be replaced by the new logo.

The some decisions of the Canonical design team regarding the Ubuntu branding did not go down very well with certain sections of the Ubuntu community. When the news of the new Kubuntu branding emerged, certain  sections of the community has already started raising concerns if the design team will make those same decisions for Kubuntu as well.

David Hussey Catch To Dismiss Paul Collingwood In IPL 3 KKR vs Delhi Match

Some of them are touting this as the catch of the IPL, however, it could possibly be much more than that. The catch taken by David Hussey to dismiss Paul Collingwood was superb at its best.

The ball first went beyond the boundary and was brought back into play by Hussey, after which he jumped back in to take a single handed catch, definitely one of the best pieces of fielding I have seen in a long time. Unfortunately for Kolkata the catch could not save the match and they lost with a huge margin.

Enjoy watching the David Hussey catch to dismiss Paul Collingwood from the KKR vs Delhi match in IPL 3 below through the video.
