HP Drops Slate Video To Counter iPad Frenzy

For the past few days, almost every tech site has been writing about the which was released to public a day before Easter. It is not that iPad is out of the news yet, but HP has just released a video of the upcoming HP Slate on and from the looks of it this one is a definite beauty.

HP Slate

HP Slate, which will run on has a camera for video support, multi-touch support with pinch to zoom, USB ports, SD memory expansion, Adobe Flash support and more. With all these features and possibly more, PC World has dubbed the device as an iPad killer, however, it is really too early to call anything a iPad killer yet.

However, there is no denying of the fact that the HP Slate as of now is a superior device than the iPad with the Slate adding several pieces of hardware missing from the iPad. The HP Slate also runs on Windows 7 which would make it compatible with a lot of software already available for Windows. In addition to that, inclusion of a camera in the Slate along with USB ports makes it a much closer replacement for the netbook as opposed to the iPad, which lacks both of these.

HP Slate is not yet ready for sale and there is no release date available right now, however, considering that iPad just launched it would be critical for HP to get the device out as soon as possible to capitalize on the user interest in tablets.

Watch a sneak peek review of the HP Slate embedded below to see the beautiful device in action.

How To Fix Missing ASL.dll While Running Blackra1n

Apple has released a new version of iTunes, iTunes 9.1 which changes how certain things work. If you have upgraded to iTunes 9.1, several programs will start giving you an error that ASL.dll is missing.

iTunes 9.1 Missing ASL.dll issue

This problem also occurs while trying to jailbreak iPhone using Blackra1n, when running the executable will give you an error saying that ASL.dll is missing as shown in the above screenshot.

The solution for this is simple, you will need to place the Blackra1n executables in the Apple folder under Common files in Program Files. The folder would be located in the following locations:

32 Bit – C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

64 Bit – C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

Once you copy the blackra1n executable to the above folder, create a shortcut for it on the desktop and double-click it to run it as usual.

Update: If you continue having problems with Blackra1n, you can use the new Spirit tool to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 and others.

img_148932_sony-ericsson-large-logo Sony-Ericsson-Xperia-X10

It’s been five days since Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia X10 in India and they’ve already rolled out an update.. The phone has been updated to R1FA016. The performance has improved along with various other things.

The major changes which have been noticed are improved audio quality and the noise has been reduced with increased bass which makes the audio quality very good. Another change is in the camera quality in which shooting at night has improved drastically with less noise in the pictures.

The onscreen keyboard was a problem with the Xperia X10 as entering text was irritating. The problem was that sometimes a single touch was not sufficient to select a letter, but now it is better.

There is no official change log given from Sony Ericsson but these are the changes which are noticeable after the update. The Xperia X10 is slowly turning out to be a hit and this early update won’t give the users a chance to complain. Now all will be waiting for Sony Ericsson to update the Android version of X10.

Note: We will be reviewing the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 soon.

The financial details of the deal was not available, however, it could very well be much higher than half a million dollars.

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Boots In 3.6 Seconds [Using SSD]

We all know about the obsession with booting speed that Ubuntu has. Since the last two Ubuntu releases, the Ubuntu developers have been consciously pushing for lower boot time.

The upcoming release of Ubuntu, i.e Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, is already showing signs that it boots fast – very very fast if you are using SSD. The Ubuntu developers will probably not be able to achieve the 10-second boot that they were aiming for in Ubuntu 10.04, but an Ubuntu Developer, Benjamin Drung, has managed to boot Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx in 3.6 seconds using SSD. On a normal spindle-based hard disk, such booting times, of course, cannot be achieved due to the mechanical parts that are involved.

Using an Super Talent Ultradrive GX 64 GB, Benjamin rebooted Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 30 times. The fastest booting time he achieved was a blistering 3.65 seconds. The overall average boot time however came out to be 4.5 seconds, which is not bad at all.

After everything is installed, the same setup understandably took a little more time to boot at 6 seconds.

All in all, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, which is to be releaed less than a month from now, is shaping up to be a release to watch out for.

[You can view the full boot chart at Benjamin Drung’s blog]

GOG.com Spring Sale on its Last Day

If non-evil succubae were game devs, they would be part of CD Projekt, or GOG.com. There is something to be said about the site and how well it mashes up great games, no DRM and insanely awesome sales. They are leeches they suck away all the precious money I’ve collected over days and months and seduce me into buying their great games in one of the best designed websites around. Especially when they have periodic sales for no other reason than to just have sales floating about. The Spring Sale is one of them, and it has already bitten my PayPal balance!

There’s Beyond Good & Evil a game I’ve played over at least three times without getting bored, Evil Genius which I bought automatically when I saw its price, and Fallout which is pretty much the best SF RPG till date.

Apart from that, Divine Divinity, Disciples 2 (Gold Edition), Gothic II (Gold Edition), Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Complete, and Myst: Masterpiece Edition (which I bought too seeing that I had never played the game ever).

This sale will last for just a day more so go on ahead!

So go, shoo, and play those great games and tell us which ones you liked!

Lock Your Programs with Lockup

lockup-icon [Windows Only] Do you manage or share user accounts on a PC? Are there certain programs that you don’t want someone to use? A tiny stand-alone freeware application named Lockup‘ will let you lock programs so they won’t run at all.

Lockup is very easy to use, but you should be very careful with it. If you make one wrong move, you can accidentally lock an entire user account so that it’s difficult to return to a usable state.

How to use Lockup:

Here’s a screenshot of one of the two modes of operation, Only the listmode.

In the screenshot above, you can see that I’ve added Internet Explorer to the list of executable files that will not run. To add more executables to the list, click the Browsebutton to select an EXE file, then click the little green check-mark icon at the bottom of the Lockup window. After you reboot or log off the PC and log back in, you’ll find that the EXEs you’ve listed will bring up a message telling you that the program is restricted.

Below, you can see a screenshot of Lockup in the All except the listmode.

This is a fairly risky mode since all executable files will be blocked from running, except those you add to the list. Make sure you don’t remove Lockup from the list or you may have a little trouble getting back access to it. I tried this mode briefly and it works great. All of my autorun (startup) applications failed to load when I logged in, even my antivirus application was blocked. This mode would be perfect for a PC that was used in a public place such as a library, school or cafe.

How does it work?

Occasionally, I run into a little program like this and I have to figure out what it’s doing. I learn lots of neat tricks this way. I suspected that Lockup was only making some changes to the Windows Registry and I was correct. I used an installation monitor to find out what changes it made in the second mode I showed you above.

As you can see in the image above, Lockup made changes to the Current_User policy to achieve the blocking it does. Anyone with the knowledge of these registry keys can do the same thing using the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe). Here’s a link to more information on the DisallowRun and RestrictRun registry keys.

Final Tips:

If you do get blocked from using programs or a specific program, you can still launch them using the Windows Run menu (Press Windows key + R) or from the command console (Press Windows key + R / type CMD’ without quotes / press Enter). For example, if I wanted to run Notepad, I could type notepad’ into the Run menu.

You can run Lockup from a USB flash drive if you want to make sure that nobody using the PC has access to the Lockup program. This could also be used for a practical joke if you are feeling mean (not recommended).

Also … here’s how to:

* Password Protect Programs and Files
* Lock and Hide Files and Folders
* Hide Your Secret Files in Zip Folders

Download: Home page for Lockup (requires .NET Framework 3.5)

Techie Buzz Verdict:

If you need to keep people from running specific applications on your PC, this little freeware app could be one of your favorite tools. It’s small, easy to use and it’s free.  The only thing missing from this application is a password protection feature.

Techie Buzz Rating: 4/5 (Excellent)
