The Google Tablet is Coming Soon, Will Steal The iPad Thunder

Google is on the edge of announcing its own Google Tablet PC. The tablet is expected anytime now, given that Eric Schmidt was recently describing it to some of his friends at a party in Los Angeles. NYTimes reports the device to be an e-reader that will also behave like a computer. It is quite obvious from these facts that it will be powered by the Android OS.

The choice of the OS also ends at Google Chrome which provides some basic cloud services. Though, Android is a better choice, given a huge developers community and the customizations that can be carried out on this scalable OS.

If and when this tablet arrives, it will be the perfect challenge to the Apple iPad. Currently, Google is the only company which would dare to stand up against the iPad and bring out its own tablet. Google’s services and their integration with the Google tablet will make it a hot favorite amongst avid internet users.

The Google Tablet will be heavily web based and will offer cloud storage. However, if this device is a response to the iPad pressure, it will not fare well. Google should stick to its charisma and simply do its original thing.

The Much Awaited Microsoft Pink Is Here – It’s Called Kin [Pictures + Video]

The rumored Microsoft phone is finally here and well… Microsoft has definitely succeeded in creating something different. Since, a picture is worth a thousand words, here are few snaps:

Microsoft has decided to christen their first mobile handsets as Kin (actually there are two models, which will be called Kin 1 and Kin 2). Surprisingly enough, they won’t be powered by Windows Phone 7. Instead, Microsoft has opted to use a Silverlight powered platform, which has been designed from the ground-up for this project.

Microsoft is promising to take social networking to the next level by reducing the noise and helping you to stay connected with the people who really matter. Kin will feature multiple social network integration including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Windows Live. What makes it different from the likes of Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and Motorola Cliq TX, is that it will allow users to prioritize updates from friends and family.

The key features of Kin are “The Loop” and “The Spot”. “The Loop” is the 3-pane home-screen, which provides access to your social feed, contacts and phone menus. “The Spot” is a circle at the bottom of the screen that allows users to share stuff with their contacts on various social networks.

Kin will come pre-loaded with loads of apps including Zune and Kin Studio. Kin 2 will also support 720p HD Video recording. You can learn more about these Microsoft phones from

Google Docs Gets More Collaborative and Real-time

Google Docs is still a no go, as far as most enterprises are concerned. However, Google is obviously desperate to claw away at Microsoft Office’s dominance. They have just announced a plethora of new features, which should make Docs a worthy alternative to Microsoft offerings such as SharePoint.

The document editor as well as the spreadsheet editor has been refreshed to provide significant performance improvements. The document editor now offers real-time experience, which means that you can view character-by-character changes as collaborators make edits. Also new to the document editor is sidebar chat, which was previously available in the spreadsheet editor.

New features in the spreadsheet editor include the formula bar for cell editing, auto-complete, drag and drop columns, and simpler navigation between sheets.

Google has also launched a collaborative drawing editor. Don’t be misled by its name, Google isn’t trying to compete with MS Paint. Rather, the drawing editor is intended for drawing flow charts, designs, diagrams and other fun or business graphics.

The drawing editor should become available later today, while the preview versions of documents and spreadsheets would be rolled out to all users within the next few days.

How To Manage the Battery Consumption in Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has pleased almost all its users with the various features it has. Unfortunately, there is one complaint which is made by almost every X10 user, the battery back-up. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has a powerful 1500MAh Li-Po battery. For the information of the X10 users, the battery doesn’t have any problem. The problem is with the optimization.

The result of this is that the standby time of X10 has become pathetic. In standby it lasts for hardly 16-19 hours. I have found these tips below in a web site Gamaze which extend the battery back-up of your Android phone to a great extent. Follow the tips below to enhance the battery performance of your X10.

1) Turn off the Always-onmobile data connection.
On the Home screen, select Menu => Settings => Wireless controls => Mobile network settings and turn off Enable always-on mobile data. This will make the biggest impact on battery life.

2) Disable Wireless network usage for positioning purposes
To disable this go to Menu => Settings => Location => Use wireless networks. This will turn off the “anonymous” Google location data collection that uses the wireless data connection frequently. Any app that will need a location will turn on the GPS separately. Please note that turning off wireless network usage for location purposes will stop the assistance provided to GPS hence, will take time.

3) Turn off Background datausage (but not if you use Google services!)
For doing this go to Menu => Settings => Data synchronization => Google => Background data. This will minimize background data usage that keeps the phone’s network connections active and use a lot of power during the day. Note! If you are using Gmail, Calendar and Contacts on your phone you need to have this enabled or it will disable automatic sync with Google online servers.

4) Always keep Wi-Fi off when not in use automate this with Y5 Battery Saver
To disable Wi-Fi go to Menu => Settings => Wireless controls and turn off Wi-Fi. If you still want to use your Wi-Fi connection install the completely free Y5 Battery Saver application. It automatically turns off the Wi-Fi when out of range and enables it again when you are close to known access points to save battery life .

5) Always keep Bluetooth off when not in use
This tip is very common and nearly everyone knows about it. Go to Menu => Settings => Wireless controls and turn off Bluetooth.

6) Avoid usage of push or very frequent email polling configure it to sync every 15 or more minutes
Mail sync frequency can be set through (Menu =>) All programs => Mail => Menubutton => More => Settings => Send & Receive => Set Download frequency => e.g. Every 15 minutes (For X10 Menu=> Email=> Menu button=> Account settings=> Email check frequency). Keep the Mail size limit at 5 KB as larger downloads consume more battery power.

7) Turn off automatic Weather updates
If you have any weather update application in your phone then turn off the automatic updates of it. As the weather doesn’t change in minutes so keeping it off will save the battery power and when needed manually update it.

8 ) Set a reasonable update frequency for Twitter, Flicker and Facebook
Most of the users have social networking profiles in twitter, facebook and others. For this they download applications and most of the applications auto update in a regular time. For saving the battery power set a reasonable auto update frequency which won’t eat up the battery e.g 30mins.

Opera Software Now Has 100 Million Users – Only 50% Are On Desktop

Opera-100-Million It seems that Opera loves to stay in the news. Now that they have taken a break from releasing new products at a breakneck pace, they are keeping themselves busy by drafting self-congratulatory press releases. The latest one celebrates the fact that Opera Software reached the milestone of having 100 million users in March.

Of course, this is not a surprising piece of news, since Opera Mini had amassed 50 million users in January 2010 itself. The desktop version was reported as having 45 million users back in December 2009.

As always, there are two ways of looking at these stats. The fact that Opera Mini has rocketed to 50 million users bodes well for Opera Software. However, its desktop browser continues to disappoint. Opera may have added 40 million active users since it went free, but its market share still pales in comparison to Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. In fact, according to most analytic firms, Opera for desktop is still struggling to touch the 3% mark.

Opera 10.5 was undoubtedly an impressive release, but Chrome’s recent beta builds have once again highlighted the glaring omissions in Opera. In spite of being around for more than a decade, Opera still doesn’t have an intelligent form filler and the lack of an API means that others can’t build one either. Google has been incredibly smart about Chrome. Since they outset they have targeted key features and now their vision is paying rich dividends. Until Opera Software wakes up, it will continue to struggle to go mainstream.

Google Acquires Plink, a Mobile Visual Search Engine

Google has recently acquired a ‘mobile visual search’ startup from UK which goes by the name of Plink. This is the first time a Google acquisition has set foot in UK. Plink has announced this on the Plinkart blog and their twitter account. The financial details of this acquisition have been kept secret though.

The official blog post at the PlinkArt blog says,

We have some very exciting news Plink has just been acquired by Google.
We started Plink to bring the power of visual search to everyone, and we’re delighted to be taking a big step towards that goal today. Google has already shown that it’s serious about investing in this space with Google Goggles, and for the Plink team the opportunity to take our algorithms to Google-scale was just too exciting to pass up.
Plink founders claim its Android app has been downloaded over 50,000 times in the last four weeks. The two founders of Plink,  PhD students Mark Cummins and James Philbin, will now join the Google Goggles team and help enhance their own product under Google.
Plink was first noticed by Google when they won a sum of $100,000 from the Android Developer Challenge in December. Plink is currently available as a popular Android app named PlinkArt which is similar to Google Goggles.

HTC And Lenovo Might Offer to Buy Plummeting Palm

This news is not confirmed yet but has been hinted at, at Bloomberg. This post at Bloomberg titled “Palm Said to Tap Goldman, Quattrone to Find Buyers (Update1)”  says that palm is making itself available for sale. The post is based on news from three inside people familiar with the situation and spilling the beans for Bloomberg.

According to those sources, the bidding will commence this week. Earlier, potential buyers included HTC, Lenovo and Dell. While HTC and Lenovo have announced their wish to enter the bid, Dell has decided to back out.

Whosoever buys Palm, will save its plummeting stocks and get the company back on track. Though, this will be a big challenge for the buyer. Frank He, a technology analyst  commented on this rumor saying,

Palm still has quite a good brand in the U.S. market, and some strong technology, so you can do something with it. The shares have gone down a lot and the company may become attractive to anyone looking for a turnaround play.

This year has been bad for Palm. It recorded a 60% surge from Jan 2010 and a sharp 32% just last week. It is quite like the Sun Microsystems of the mobile world now. The more this deal drags on, the more loss it will make for Palm as well as the buyer. We will come back with more news on this once the rumor gains some credibility.
