Sony Ericsson Naite – Ecofriendly Phone That is Light on Your Pocket

Sony Ericsson Naite is a low-end, ecofriendly handset targeted at budget conscious buyers. This model belongs to the GreenHeart range, which means that it has been constructed from recycled and with recyclable plastic and has a reduced carbon footprint. Sony Ericsson has even replaced the printed manual with an electronic one to conserve paper. However, does Naite have enough substance to help Sony Ericsson establish a foothold in the low-end mobile segment? Let us take a look.

Sony-Ericsson-Naite-India Naite is available in two colours – Vapour Silver and Ginger Red. The silver model looks simple yet elegant and classy. However, the crimson colour scheme is jarringly loud and is bit of a misfit on an otherwise simplistic phone. The handset weighs just 84g but doesn’t feel flaky.

The phone UI is simple and charming. Everything works as it should and, more importantly, works well. The phone lacks GPS, but has an inbuilt Google Maps application. Although Instant Messaging support is present, there aren’t any dedicated social networking apps. Naite also includes EcoMate applications, which provides daily environmental tips, quizzes and even virtual pets.

On the connectivity side, Naite fares decently thanks to HSDPA and EDGE support. The included 2-megapixel camera is decent enough for a budget phone but obviously can’t compete with the ones found in Naite’s more expensive siblings.

Music playback is a strictly standard affair. Only MP3 and AAC formats are supported. Even more disappointing is the proprietary headphone jack used in this handset. Thankfully, SE at least decided to dump their M2 storage format in favour of microSD.

Naite allows you to surf the web, listen to music, snap photographs and even make video calls. However, as expected from a budget phone, it does not excel at any of those things. In the end, it is a solid offering and is good enough for anyone who is primarily going to use his phone for talking. Priced at just Rs. 6,550 Naite is a smart buy.

Opera Mini for iPhone Approved by Apple – Available Now in An App Store Near You

Christmas has come early for Opera fans – Apple has just approved Opera Mini for the App Store. Apple took its time – 20 days, 08 hours and 31 minutes to be exact, but finally made the right call.

This move may come as a surprise to many, but Opera Software had always been optimistic (at least publically). They were confident that technically Opera Mini doesn’t violate any App Store terms and conditions. However, Opera Mini is definitely a competitor to the in-built Safari browser and many believed that this alone would be enough provocation for Apple.

Opera had managed to rally its supporters and build public support through a carefully orchestrated campaign. It is impossible to say if the fear of negative publicity (and FCC’s ire) played any role in Apple’s decision to let Opera Mini through, but one can’t entirely ignore that possibility.

Opera Mini for iPhone brings its familiar combination of speed (up to 6x faster than the in-built browser) and functionality to the table. Opera Mini managed to sneak through Apple’s strict policies mainly because it doesn’t render the website on your device. Instead, all traffic is routed through Opera’s servers where they are rendered and compressed. This compression results in improved browsing speed and even reduces your bandwidth bills.

Other highlights of Opera Mini for iPhone include powerful tabbed browsing, session restore, Opera Link (data synchronization), visual speed dial, password manager and find-in-page.

Opera Mini is already available in most countries and should become available everywhere within the next 24 hours.

Install Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Beta 2 using Wubi

Just couple of days ago, Canonical had announced the release of the second beta of Ubuntu Linux. I wanted to try out the second beta ( I haven’t tried the 10.04 series yet) – but being a beta version I thought I’ll do a Wubi install, instead of a traditional install. Once I mounted the ISO file and launched Wubi, I ran into a roadblock.

Wubi on the beta ISO proceeded to download the current stable version,i.e., Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, instead of proceeding to install Lucid. I thought I had downloaded the wrong ISO image, so I went back to the releases page, and just as I was about to redownload the ISO, I spotted at the very end of the page, a link to wubi.exe. Feeling curious to try it out, I proceeded to download, and voilà! Wubi install of Lucid was underway.

Bad news, however is that if you’ve already downloaded Lucid CD image, Wubi will proceed to re-download the ISO image. I tried putting my downloaded ISO image in wubi\install folder, and tried to start Wubi install. That, however, resulted in Wubi asking me to uninstall the existing version. In the end, I had to download the CD image again.

If you want to know more about Wubi and how to do a dual boot Windows and Linux install, do refer to our previous guide on dual booting Ubuntu and Windows using Wubi.

Temporarily Disable Windows Power Settings with Don’t Sleep

[Windows only]: While downloading large files from the internet, sometimes you may not be sitting in front of your computer. Often, you would put the computer in download mode and leave the desk for some other work. The downloads would take hours to finish and you would want to have a break or take a short nap.

The problem with marathon downloads is that the Windows power settings come into play after a definite interval of time. Say you are downloading movies or torrents and the download may take 5-6 hours to finish. You start the download manager but when you return after an hour, you find the computer has been logged off or put to “Sleep”.

That’s when you need tools like Don’t Sleep. It’s a tiny portable application for Windows which temporarily suspends Windows power settings and prevents the system from logging off, restarting, hibernating or going to sleep mode.

The program requires no installation and does not modify Windows registry. It sets temporary rules to override the power plans in Windows so that the downloads can continue without any problem.
You can set the timer in the program options and can turn off Windows screensaver when the system is in idle state.

Of course, you can manually change the power plans before starting the downloads and then switch back to normal power plans when the downloads are finished. But those who want to avoid the hassle of opening the control panel and tweaking the Power settings, this freeware does the job well.

Don’t Sleep works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows7.

Techie Buzz Verdict

The program is simple to use. I would like to see a timer feature being included – the ability to shut down computer at a specified time of the day. This will save the hassle of using another utility to shut down the computer when the downloads have finished.

Techie Buzz rating: 3/5 (average).

Twitter Can Predict The Box Office?

Researchers at Hewlett Packard have claimed that Twitter, the popular microblogging service can predict Box Office behaviors of any movie with a high accuracy.

The research data includes three million tweets analyzing over 25 movies. The metrics used for the prediction are the frequency of the updates. This can be safely used to predict values with an error margin of around 0.05% only. Further, analyzing the content of the tweets could help decide the ongoing success. HP calls this tapping into collective intelligence.

Bernardo Huberman, head of the social computing lab at HP told BBC,

the system predicted that zombie film The Crazies would take $16.8m in its first weekend in the US. It actually took $16.06m.

The team forecast that romantic drama Dear John would take $30.71m in its first US weekend. It took $30.46m.

The stats from HP showed that there was a sudden rise in buzz over twitter on the launch week. This predicted the initial success. The buzz from the next week acted like reviews. HP believes if it works for movies, so could it for gadgets and every other product out there.
