Micromax W900 – Windows Smartphone for Just Rs. 7,000

Over the past year, the cheap smartphone category has been growing by leaps and bounds. Stylish phones like Samsung Corby managed to grab the imagination of the young generation and have become runaway hits. However, Micromax is taking a slightly different route and is concentrating on functionality over style.

Micromax W900 is an impressive offering, which runs on Windows Mobile 6.1. Under the hood of W900 lies a competent K3 Hi3611 460MHz processor coupled with 128 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM. The handset is bundled with a 2 GB microSD card; however, cards up to 16 GB are supported. Besides the standard Windows Mobile features such as Microsoft Office, Active Sync and Pocket SMS, W900 also includes some handy goodies such as Maps powered by MapmyIndia.

Sure, Micromax may not be able to offer the smooth experience we have come to expect from big names like Nokia and Samsung. However, Win Mo has numerous benefits and there are very few Windows Mobile phones in the sub-10k price range. This alone makes Micromax W900 a handset to seriously consider.

X.Org Memory Leak Bug Fixed For Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

The release of Ubuntu 10.04 is just a few days away now. Though, this latest news of the X.Org memory leak has slightly dampened the spirit of the Ubuntu release. A bug which was affecting GLX version  1.4, was found at a crucial last moment in Debian. Read more about this bug at an  earlier post on Techie Buzz.

Ubuntu being a Debian based OS was affected equally. Being on the safe side, Ubuntu will now ship with an older version of GLX: version 1.2.  You can check this at the bug tracking page at launchpad.

About GLX,

GLX (initialism for “OpenGL Extension to the  X Window System”) provides the  binding connecting  OpenGL and the  X Window System: it enables programs wishing to use OpenGL to do so within a window provided by the X Window System.

(Via: Wikipedia)

About X.Org,

X.Org Server (commonly abbreviated to  Xorg Server or just  Xorg) refers to the  X server release packages stewarded by the  X.Org Foundation.

(Via:  Wikipedia)

As evident from above, GLX and X.Org manage the windowing system on a typical Linux desktop. The GLX patch, which  caused this crash of GLX 1.4 has been withdrawn by Debian and is no more available.

The Problem in Ubuntu

The actual problem the bug was causing in Ubuntu was a deallocation problem while running Clutter apps. After the patch released by Debian was removed, Ubuntu tried to apply its own patch to the memory leak problem. It even worked initially. Though, it was revealed later that the patch by Ubuntu failed to check the memory leak and only slowed it down making the PC considerably slow over time.

The Fix

Fall back to GLX 1.2.

Know Your System’s Details With Speccy [Hardware Analysis]

[Windows Only] Coming from the same guys who made CCleaner and Defraggler, this one called Speccy from Piriform sure takes a hit at being simple and doing just what it should. Speccy is a hardware information tool that scratches your system for details and lists down everything about your hardware in a neat and tidy interface.

For people using Windows, CCleaner has been a clear favorite when it comes to quick system maintenance. Falling in the same league, Speccy allows you to have a glance of all the system details swiftly without any fuss required at the user-end.

The application caters to all aspects of hardware, from the CPU to Network to Graphics and whatever comes in between. There’s a summary page where you can see all the details in brief and then click through them to have them explained. If you’re the regular forum bird, Speccy can come in handy in a lot of situations where you need to hand over your system specs to another party, for Speccy allows you to take a screenshot’ of your configuration and have it saved to a file. This screenshot is not a jpeg as many would have assumed. It is a .speccy file which you can send over to another party and can only be opened with the Speccy application. When opened, it will present a duplicate copy of configuration as snapped from your PC.

Like other Piriform apps, Speccy is available as an installer and a portable zip file which, again, can come in handy if you’re the de facto tech support for everyone around you!

Facebook Like Extension Lets you “Like” any Webpage From Google Chrome

Facebook recently switched from “Become a Fan” to “Like” feature which has received mixed reactions from the audience. But if you want to “Like” any webpage quickly from the browser window and without logging in to Facebook, the Facebook Likes Google Chrome extension might help.

The extension solves two purposes. First, you can share any webpage with your Facebook friends right from Google Chrome. There is no need to copy links, titles, images and paste them in the status update text box. Just hit the “Like” button and the story is shared on your Facebook wall.

The second advantage is that the extension also shows recent related activity from other Facebook users. This does not necessarily mean your Facebook friends, but shows the content which other users are sharing on Facebook. This is a nice way to figure out which stories are getting the votes and  which topic is getting the buzz right now.

To use the extension, click on the “Thumbs up” button placed just right of the address bar as shown below:

The story will be shared with your Facebook friends and you can also see what your friends are “Liking”. Please note the extension does nothing if you are not logged in to Facebook.

Techie Buzz Verdict

The Facebook Like extension for Chrome is the simplest way to “like” any webpage from the browser. One addition would have been perfect – store the username and password in the extension options and share the story, even if you are not logged in to Facebook.

Windows-7-Touch-Pack We all know that Windows 7 has been selling like hot cakes since its release. However, the exact volume was up for debate. Now, Microsoft has revealed that so far more than 100 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold.

Nevertheless, Windows XP is still proving to be immensely sticky. According to Net Applications, 64.5% PCs are still on the decade old operating system, while only about ten percent are on Windows Vista.

Riding on the back of strong Windows 7 sales, Microsoft’s net profit for the previous quarter soared to $4.01 billion.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are gearing to play the Final match of season 3. The final will be played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai at 8PM on 25th April 2010.

This will definitely be a cracker of a match and you can expect a lot of fireworks with both the bat and the ball. Mumbai Indians could be in a bit of a trouble if Sachin Tendulkar hand injury keeps him out of the match. However, Mumbai Indians have been the only consistent team in IPL 2010 and there are several players who have contributed towards their success including Kevin Pollard.

Chennai Super Kings will definitely look to win their first IPL, since they were the losing finalists in the first edition of IPL. Dhoni might be pretty happy with their semi-final performance, however, there are some worries with the batting.

Though Mumbai are the clear favorites, only time will tell who will be the winner, and of course this is 20-20, the team which plays well on the given day will win on the day, so it is anyone’s game.

Perform Inline Google Searches in Chrome’s Address bar with Inline Google Extension

Google Chrome is probably the only browser which supports searching from the address bar by default. It works simple – you specify a default search engine in the browser settings and type the keywords or phrase in the address bar. The search results show up in a new browser tab which is useful, because you don’t have to open the home page of your favorite search engine again and again.

But if you have the habit of working with multiple tabs,   this feature can get a bit tiring. Whenever you search, the results are shown in a new tab and you have to close or navigate away from the page you were reading.

This is where Inline Google comes in. It’s a nifty little chrome extension which adds pop up functionality for performed searches. The search results are shown in separate pop up windows and you can see the results without leaving the current page you are reading.

To use the extension, hit the “G” icon placed just right of the chrome address bar. This will open a pop up window where you can type your search query:

Hit the “Search” button and the results will be shown in the same window as shown below:

Clicking a search result opens the page in a new browser tab. Currently the extension supports searching web, images, videos and news results.

Techie Buzz Verdict

The Inline Google extension is very simple to use but there aren’t any options which you can tweak. I would want some options being included – loading the search results in the same frame or may be opening the clicked link in the same tab.
