Quickly Scan Any File with 40 Different Antivirus Engines

VirusTotal-icoThere are several online services that will allow you to check files for viruses or malware by uploading the files from your computer. One reason you might use one of these services is that you have downloaded a new program and you want to know if it’s safe to install on your computer. One of the services that I use most often is called Virus Total’.

Virus Total is a free, independent service that will analyze uploaded files with around 40 different antivirus engines. Here is the current list:

AhnLab (V3)
Antiy Labs (Antiy-AVL)
Aladdin (eSafe)
ALWIL (Avast! Antivirus)
Authentium (Command Antivirus)
AVG Technologies (AVG)
Avira (AntiVir)
Cat Computer Services (Quick Heal)
ClamAV (ClamAV)
Comodo (Comodo)
CA Inc. (Vet)
Doctor Web, Ltd. (DrWeb)
Emsi Software GmbH (a-squared)
Eset Software (ESET NOD32)
Fortinet (Fortinet)
FRISK Software (F-Prot)
F-Secure (F-Secure)
G DATA Software (GData)
Hacksoft (The Hacker)
Hauri (ViRobot)
Ikarus Software (Ikarus)
INCA Internet (nProtect)
K7 Computing (K7AntiVirus)
Kaspersky Lab (AVP)
McAfee (VirusScan)
Microsoft (Malware Protection)
Norman (Norman Antivirus)
Panda Security (Panda Platinum)
PC Tools (PCTools)
Prevx (Prevx1)
Rising Antivirus (Rising)
Secure Computing (SecureWeb)
BitDefender GmbH (BitDefender)
Sophos (SAV)
Sunbelt Software (Antivirus)
Symantec (Norton Antivirus)
VirusBlokAda (VBA32)
Trend Micro (TrendMicro)
VirusBuster (VirusBuster)

They keep those engines up to date with the latest virus signatures, and they also offer detailed results from each engine in their reports. Virus Total is available in nearly two dozen languages.

To use this service, you simply visit the web page, click on the file upload button, select the file and wait for it to upload. Once the file is uploaded, you will often have to wait a few minutes for the scan results to appear. If you think that sounds pretty easy to do, you are correct. However, Virus Total now offers an even easier method, the Virus Total Uploader.

After you install the Virus Total Uploader [Windows Only] on your PC, you can right click on a file, then Send tothe Virus Total site.

virus-total-uploader-context-sendto-menu

After a few seconds, your web browser will open up to show you the results of the antivirus tests from Virus Total.

That’s not the only trick that the Uploader has for you. When you launch it from your Start menu, you’ll see three other upload options in it’s interface:

virus-total-uploader-main-interface

  • upload a file by choosing it’s process name
  • select a file by browsing to it’s location
  • type in the URL of a file on the web

Go to the Virus Total Uploader page to get it.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Having a good antivirus program installed on your PC is a must have. The ability to double check files using 40 different antivirus engines is not required, but it sure is nice to have. If you’d like to try this application, I recommend it.

What’s New In Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Ubuntu 10.04 was released two days back and has been getting a lot of attention due to its new branding, theme etc. On the same day, KDE SC based Ubuntu derivative,  Kubuntu 10.04 was also released.

Here are the new features that made it to Kubuntu 10.04:

New Branding

Just like the new branding that Ubuntu got, Kubuntu also has a new branding for Lucid Lynx. It now has a new logo and icon which are now part of the updated Plymouth boot splash screen.

KDE Software Compilation 4.4

Bugs in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Final Release

Ubuntu 10.04 final release came amidst speculations of bugs like the X.Org memory leak and there are no major bugs till now except for the ones which have been there in Ubuntu core itself for a long time.

A blog has listed down an extensive set of Ubuntu 10.04 (“Lucid Lynx”) bugs. You can see the page at LinuxCommands.com.

  • The major factor giving rise to these bugs are latest untested products and features Ubuntu has put into this supposedly final build. Even Windows 7 pre-beta release was better in this respect.
  • As soon as I started the bootable thumb drive, I saw a welcome bootsplash image which was out of sync from the monitor. Its size being a small boxes, the animation was happening at an odd place.
  • I was unable to connect to the Internet through my TataPhoton Plug2Surf. I had to write a wvdial to even see it detected.
  • The resolution of my system was not detected which was supposed to be the latest feature: “Better support for detection of monitor settings”!

More bugs/reports  will be added to this list as I discover it.

Create Bootable Ubuntu 10.04 Installation Disk with Unetbootin

Ubuntu 10.04 is available from the Ubuntu homepage in various flavors. You can chose the one best suited to your need but the problem here is that most of them are ISO files and you will go around looking for a CD to burn the ISO.
unetbootin

Let me tell you, that is not necessary. You can install Ubuntu from a portable hard-drive or a thumb drive also. All you need is a simple application named Unetbootin which is available for Windows and is built into Ubuntu.

In Windows

Go to the Unetbootin SourceForge hosting page to download it. The download is sized at under 500 KB and has options to create a bootable drive for installing Ubuntu from a downloaded ISO. It can also download Ubuntu and create the bootable disk automatically.

In Ubuntu

Go to the Create Startup Disk option under System->Administration->Create a USB startup disk. Here you will find a simple interface explaining it all.

These are the two methods to create bootable Ubuntu disks in both Windows and Ubuntu. Now that you know how to install ,get hold of a thumb drive, download the ISO and follow this installation guide.

Xiph.Org Foundation Responds To Steve Jobs’ Threat: “Creative Individuals Don’t Really Like to Give Their Business to Jackbooted Thugs”

Monty Montgomery of Xiph.Org Foundation has responded to Steve Job’s threat. Xiph is the foundation responsible for taking care of Ogg, Theora and many other codecs. If you have missed the on-going codec wars, now would be a good time to catch up. Check out our previous article on Steve Job’s veiled threat to Theora before proceeding.

Here is Montgomery’s response:

Thomson Multimedia made their first veiled patent threats against Vorbis almost ten years ago. MPEG-LA has been rumbling for the past few years. Maybe this time it will actually come to something, but it hasn’t yet. I’ll get worried when the lawyers advise me to; i.e., not yet.

The MPEG-LA has insinuated for some time that it is impossible to build any video codec without infringing on at least some of their patents. That is, they assert they have a monopoly on all digital video compression technology, period, and it is illegal to even attempt to compete with them. Of course, they’ve been careful not to say quite exactly that.

If Jobs’s email is genuine, this is a powerful public gaffe (‘All video codecs are covered by patents.’) He’d be confirming MPEG’s assertion in plain language anyone can understand. It would only strengthen the pushback against software patents and add to Apple’s increasing PR mess. Macbooks and iPads may be pretty sweet, but creative individuals don’t really like to give their business to jackbooted thugs.

Montgomery’s comment is both straight to the point and piercing. He is right in highlighting the fallacy of software patents. Instead of encouraging competition and innovation, they promote bullying and stifle the little guy. It’s ironic that Apple is trying to portray itself as open and also going after an open source project like Theora at the same time.

Update: Xiph’s Greg Maxwell has also responded to this controversy by trying to clear up the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) that companies like Apple and Microsoft are trying to generate around open codecs like Theora. You can read his take over here.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.4 Release for 10.04 Lucid Lynx

With the Ubuntu 10.04 release, software developers are responding quickly to this. Ubuntu Tweaks 0.5.4 has been released for Ubuntu 10.04 and it has tweaks specially built for Lucid.

The homepage describes Ubuntu tweak as,

Ubuntu Tweak is an application to config Ubuntu easier for everyone.  It provides many useful desktop and system options that the default desktop environment doesn’t provide.  With its help, you will enjoy with the experience of Ubuntu!

A new improved feature is the ability to choose the background and logo on the login screen. Otherwise, Ubuntu tweaks allows you to set hot regions on the screen edges which can be used to perform compiz operations, install more software not found in regular repositories and tweak Ubuntu settings to the fullest. It also allows easy adding of nautilus scripts. This makes it the best Ubuntu tuning software.

Ubuntu 10.04 Feature Tour Video

With the release of Ubuntu 10.04, feature tours, installation and other videos have started springing up. You can read about them all you want but nothing works like a visual.

The 10.04 Lucid Lynx has some nifty new features and this video will tell us about most of those features in details.

Although this release is in high speculation it is not as perfectly designed as the version 9.1 was. This is because of some core changes which will need time for a better overall integration with the overall environment. Lets hope for the best with the next release.
