Speedtest.net Results: Now Available to the Public

Launched in 2007, Speedtest.net emerged as the most reliable service to check one’s connection speed. The service provides an unmatched speed analysis application on an interactive flash page.

Ookla, the company behind Speedtest has recently made all speed test results available to the public. Ookla claims that it has been compiling those query results which amount to 1.5 Billion now. Up until now, the data was available through individual agreements. This is about to change and the data will now be available for free usage.

Ookla has made this release hoping that it will help ISPs, governments and website administrators take decisive steps. For example, network pockets with better speed and throughput can be identified and they can be used to reduce loads elsewhere.

It is said that any internet user is always within 300 miles of an Ookla server. That makes them an authority in usage tracking.

Now that the service has a stronghold, Ookla is planning to collect user feedback on broadband. It will ask users about broadband charges and usage limits and identify the cost per MB of data worldwide. It will also collect postal code for even more accurate benchmarking of worldwide broadband usage.

This is an excellent move by Ookla and will benefit the Internet at large.

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz tells Michael Arrington From TechCrunch to Fuck-off

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz walked into the office of Michael Arrington from TechCrunch and talked with him for a good long 25 minutes. In the talks, while Michael supported the move made by Yahoo! in focusing on other areas else than search, Carol was insisting on Yahoo! being a web search company primarily.

Then, she goes on to say that TechCrunch was a “tiny company” and “So don’t give me crap about what the fine people of Yahoo! are supposed to do, so F-off.”

Carol has a fake twitter account which is famous for spilling out similar responses but this coming from the real Carol is hilarious.

“Everybody draw Mohammed Day!” Facebook Page Censored in India

After being kicked out of Pakistan, Facebook is not taking any chances. It has blocked the controversial “Everybody draw Mohammed Day!” page in India. “Out of respect for the local regulations, standards and customs, we have decided to restrict access to the ‘Everyone Draw Mohammed!’ page from India, after being contacted by authorities and reviewing the matter closely,” a spokeswoman for Facebook e-mailed to PCWorld.

Southpark-201-Muhammad-Censored

It all started when Comedy Central censored the image of the prophet Muhammad in an episode of SouthPark, in response to threats from radical Islamists. Reacting to Comedy Central’s censorship, Jon Wellington created the Facebook page “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” and invited others to exercise their first amendment rights. Soon the initiative went viral and received massive response from all corners of the world. Unfortunately, it also provided a platform to Muslim-bashers to post offensive caricatures of the prophet.

Pakistan has already banned thousands of websites including Facebook and YouTube. In fact, a poll suggests that 70% of Pakistanis want Facebook to be banned permanently. India is unlikely to follow in Pakistan’s footsteps, however the growing cyber-censorship in India is bound to worry civil rights activists. Any freedom guaranteed by the constitution is subject to reasonable restrictions. The freedom of expression doesn’t provide the freedom to abuse and hurt the religious beliefs of another. There is always a thin line between use and abuse. Was this such an exceptional case? Was the Indian government justified in censoring Everybody Draw Mohammed Day”? Don’t forget to let us know what you think.
