Yesterday, we had news that HTC was supposedly going to release an Android 2.1 update for HTC Hero in late April, however, here is some news which will bring cheers to your ears.

According to a HTC forum member, who spoke with a Sprint executive to troubleshoot his HTC Hero which did not have service, the 2.1 update may arrive on March 26th, 2010 for Sprint users instead of the late April. The conversation below: (emphasis added)

I just got of the phone with the advanced support at sprint becuase my phone did not have any service since this morning. They tried all the basic trouble shooting and then said that they had seen this issue before but that the new firmware will address this issue they also stated that reactivating the phone is a work around for now. I kept on asking about the firmware release and they finally released a date for the 2.1 firmware. He stated and confirm that this update will come on 03/26/2010.

However, this update is not officially confirmed, and if released will only be available for Sprint users right now, other HTC Hero users might have to wait till April end to receive official OTA updates from HTC directly.

We will keep our eyes open for any official confirmation from Sprint with regards to this. In the meantime you can call the Sprint support and let us know if they do confirm this with you.

Update: Commentator @Nasty confirmed with Sprint that the Android 2.1 update for HTC Hero will be released in late March, which confirms our earlier date March 26th, 2010. Have fun.

Update 2 – March 22nd: We just came across a voice message from a Sprint representative to a customer which confirms the OTA update for HTC Hero and HTC Moment on March 26th, you can read about it here.

    YESSSSS!

This is encouraging news, but I will still reserve my excitement until I hear official word that this is true. I have had my HTC Hero for just over a month now, so thankfully I haven't had to wait as long as some folks for this update.

I'd like to know if this will end up being an OTA update or if I'll have to upload it manually via USB. I think Sprint's policy is that OTA updates can't be over 10 MB because it would tie up the phone too long and thus be a hindrance in an emergency situation.

OMFG! finally. My Hero will no longer be laggy, and have all those neat 2.1 features like the droid! Woooo!

Called sprint to find out when 2.1 update was coming. After being transfered several times I ended up talking to a sprint HTC hero tech specialist. He said it will be released end of March and can be downloaded at http://www.sprint.com/downloads or over the air by accessing the firmware update feature on your hero.

I am ready to throw my Hero out the window. The update better show up on 3/26 or I'm going to buy a used Pre.

Considering very few people at Sprint know the actual release date for any software updates(none of which will ever be someone that answers the phone for a customer with a technical issue), most likely this was told to the customer by a frustrated employee getting berated by a belligerent Sprint customer, demanding something unrealistic. This was probably said just to get him off the phone, “tell him what he wants to hear and he will go away”, this has been a tactic of phone support in all industries for as long as there has been phone support. I would be seriously shocked if there was any truth to this at all.

It's true. Sprint customer service reps usually go through support.sprint.com to answer the questions. Given that, I won't expect even the "advanced" reps to be able to pin point the exact date. In fact, I'd be surprised if they know about it even after the release.

So is this going to take care of the picture text problem and fix the standard Message app so it doesn't drain battery life?

    • Sylvia

I hope this takes cares of the picture text problem..I've been having this problem for weeks now…

Which of you fools are dreaming about repeating this experience – bet some of you are salivating about the supersonic and Wimax courtesy of the Now Network and HTC – good luck to you all – Dan Hesse has a wonderful bridge he is building for you… to nowhere (no, no, I mean Brooklyn).
