Samsung Intentionally Holding Back Android 2.2 Update For Vibrant
By on January 13th, 2011

The folks over at AndroidSpin have received a tip from a very reliable source which says that Samsung is intentionally holding back the Android 2.2 update for the Vibrant. According to the tipster, Samsung has a fully functional Android 2.2 OTA for the Vibrant ready to be pushed to the owners but the company is not doing so.

The reason behind this move is that the update will affect the sales of the upcoming Vibrant 4G which runs on Android 2.2 and features 4G and a front facing video camera.

Below is what the tipster exactly said-:

Some disturbing things have happened the last week or so concerning our Vibrant.   Samsung has NOT allowed us to push the update OTA for 2.2 because they feel it will decrease the value of the upcoming Vibrant4G +. While from a marketing aspect i totally understand, as the Vibrant 4G is what the original Vibrant should have been in the 1st place. But to shun off and bold face lie to customers is NOT what T-Mobile is about.

…Being that, Vibrant 4G and Vibrant have exactly same stats, added FFC and a new movie and the 4G. But i will tell you this, the original vibrant CAN utilize 4G FULLY. Yes FULLY. not what they are telling you.

If this news is true, then Samsung is surely in knee deep trouble. Selling millions of handsets is not going to work for a long time; you need to keep the existing customers happy with Android updates as well. This will make sure that the existing customers remain happy and will make them brand loyal as well. Looks like Samsung is unable to understand this simple logic here.

However, I think T-Mobile should also be blamed here. The carrier can easily force’ Samsung to release the Android 2.2 update for the Vibrant owners but the company is not doing so. It is even possible that it is T-Mobile and not Samsung who are holding back the Android 2.2 update for the Vibrant.

After all, Samsung has released the Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S handsets in all over the world including the Vibrant for the T-Mobile UK network. In fact, the Vibrant 4G has not even been announced yet. Holding back the Android 2.2 update for an unreleased phone does seem a bit impractical to me.

What do you think especially T-Mobile Vibrant owners? Do let us know your views by dropping in a comment.

I have had a samsung vibrant for months now and have watched as we were passed up by updates for android 2.2, how frustrating. The Samsung Galaxy phones are really sweet devices, but there is only so much BS you can tolerate.

I have recently switched to and HTC G2. Goodbye Samsung and your games. Good luck with the shady business practices.

This is incredibly frustrating for me. I have been a T-mobile Client for 3 years because of their cheaper plans. I also have the Samsung Vibrant for months now, and I have been waiting for this 2.2 OS update for awhile now, and this is how I am treated? They have the update already and because of marketing issues T-mobile is not releasing it? clearly, they do not care about our satisfaction and only the money they are making. I will call T-mobile and cancel the contract and from now on I am not buying anything from Samsung. I have had it with this companies.

I don’t believe that Samsung is to blame. 1st- My cousin is with Sprint and he has Samsung Galaxy S(SGS) which had 4G capability and android 2.1, and he was able to update to 2.2(Flash, wifi tether, etc.(I verified myself.) 2nd- Samsung for a 4G phone could use Gingerbread (Android 2.3) as an advance. This is yet another example how US consumer can be easily and legally ripped off.(Why do you think that brands like Lexus, Infinity and Acura are sold only in USA? Because we want the brand and don’t care if my Lexus doesn’t have onStar* like Chevrolet does.) The rest of the world would boycott things like this and company will get hurt financially. “LIBERTY has the one that is not on the lowest steps of democracy ladder”(myself). T-Mobile already been to court for constricting service and I guess it’s a habit that they got.

Actually the reason why we have Lexus, Infinity, Acura is because of the US government. Back in the 70′s or 80′s, I don’t remember the exact date, but the US govt made a limit on the number of lower quality japanese imports in the US. i.e. the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry were so cheap back then it was hurting Chevy and Ford sell cars. They lobbied and Congress made it so that there was a limit on cheap Japanese cars. What did Japan do, they created a higher brand of cars to sell at a higher price. Thus, the creation of Acura, Lexus, Infiniti brands only in the US. Not what you are eluding to my friend. Know your history before you speak. Otherwise we are doomed to repeat it.

I’m so pissed off about this. I purchased the Samsung Vibrant when it was released in hopes of having these updates before anyone else. With the specs it’s clear to everyone it should’ve been top tier for awhile, that it is apt of 4G capabilities. Now we’re going to have 2.2 late when we should already be getting 2.3? And with how much the phone still costs, this is so wrong and manipulative. I feel as if I’m just carrying a paper weight in my pocket. I don’t really care who’s to blame in this; T-Mobile and Samsung are both going to suffer from losing customers. Hopefully this scam hits national tv so everyone knows about this bs. I’m dropping T-Mobile and not using Samsung products anymore, and everyone would be smart to do the same. Never again. I guess T-mobile is always going to be behind. 4G my ass.

I am disappointed on this decision I am sure that people are still going to be interested in getting the new vibrant when it comes out because the camera is on the front and I am sure its going to look nicer.Tmobile just release the freaking update every one that has this phone paid good money to have it and give them business the least they can do is make there customers happy.
