Samsung To Unveil A New Android Phone On November 8th

Samsung has just sent out an invite to most of the popular tech bloggers out there (Sadly, I did not receive one :( ) inviting them for the unveiling of their brand new Android device. The event is scheduled to take place on November 8th at 6pm in New York. As of now, there is hardly any information about the handset which Samsung is going to announce.

However, rumors suggest that the this new Android based handset from Samsung will be a Google experience phone i.e. it will be running a stock version of Android 2.2 or perhaps Android 2.3?

This same handset can very well be the Samsung Continuum whose pictures leaked on the Internet few weeks ago. The Samsung Continuum sports two OLED based displays with the secondary OLED display being used for some simple tasks and to preserve battery life.

Nokia N900 PR1.3 Firmware Update Released

Nokia has released the PR 1.3 (V20.2010.36-2) firmware update for its Maemo based internet-tablet-cum-handset – the N900. The new firmware update adds support for the Nokia Ovi Suite to make syncing data between the handset and PC easier.   The update also includes hundreds’ of tweaks and bug fixes to make the N900 run faster and smoother. This is the same firmware update about which we had reported a couple of weeks ago. This update will allow developers to dual-boot between Maemo and MeeGo OS. N900 owners can update the firmware on their device via OTA (Over-The Air). Since the handset features UDP (User Data Preservation), users don’t need to make a backup of their data. However, for safety purposes users should make a backup of their data.

Nokia will slowly be releasing the firmware update in various regions of the world in the upcoming weeks.

Huawei first came into the limelight when it announced the Huawei Ideos, the cheapest Android smartphone known to humanity.

The Huawei Ideos X6 is the better one of the two – it has a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512 MB RAM, 2 GB ROM and comes with a 4.1 inch capacitive touchscreen display. It also packs in a 5 MP camera which can capture 720p HD video.

Motorola Droid X/Droid 2 Overclocked To 2GHz!

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha had promised that the company will release a phone equipped with a 2GHz processor by the year end. Well, Motorola might or might not be able to fulfil the promise but the Droid X and the Droid 2 modding community already has. Matt4542 of the DeFuse team has managed to overclock his Droid X and Droid 2 to a whopping 2GHz.

It was just a couple of days ago; we had reported that FreeWELL had managed to overclock the Droid X and the Droid 2 to 1.2GHz. Heck! These guys are trying to get the processor to run stably at 2.5GHz!!!

Along with this, another member in the Droid X/2 modding scene JRummy has released an app which allows Droid X and Droid 2 owners to easily overclock their phone’s processor. The application allows users to overclock their phone’s processor up to 1.45GHz as well as allow them to change the voltage supplied to the phone’s processor. The application also has Apps To SD support and an inbuilt Ad blocker.

The application is available on the Android market for a measly 0.99$.

Angry Birds Arrives On Symbian

Close on the heels of the launch of Angry Birds for Android, Rovio Mobile has released the full version of Angry Birds for Symbian. Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably already aware that Angry Birds is a fun little mobile game that took the iTunes App Store (iPod/iPhone/iPad) by storm, and has since then has been busy disrupting numerous other app stores. In fact, Angry Birds has gone on to become the game everyone wants for their own operating system.

Angry Birds for Symbian^3 ships with 105 levels, and Rovio has promised to deliver more content in the future. The gameplay is similar to the other versions, and from what I have heard, is still addictive as hell. The objective of the game is deceptively simple. You have to fling birds using catapult to hit all the pigs present in a level. The pigs are often sheltered by various obstructions, which must be strategically destroyed to succeed.

Angry Birds for Symbian^3 can be downloaded from the Ovi Store.

Nokia Renames Symbian… To Symbian

Along with their quarterly financial report, Nokia also announced that there will be no more Symbian^4. Now don’t jump to a conclusion that Symbian is dead. What Nokia (and I) meant that any improvements and update which the Symbian platform will see will be passed over to all the Symbian^3 devices currently in the market. Symbian

Here is what Nokia exactly said :

You can buy a Nokia smartphone confident that any improvements introduced later to the Symbian platform, such as the user interface, can be made available to download on your device as well. No need to wait for Symbian^4 – the improvements we were planning for Symbian^4 will be introduced as and when they become available. In fact, we will no longer be talking about Symbian^3 or Symbian^4 at all it will be one constantly evolving and constantly improving platform.

So from the above statement it is clear that there will be no more Symbian^3 or Symbian^4. It will just be Symbian from henceforth. According to me, this is a pretty smart move to keep all the present N8 owners happy as well as to lure new customers to the Symbian platform. Along with this, Nokia also announced that they will be streamlining the development for both MeeGo and Symbian by using Qt and only Qt. The Finnish company also announced that they will be adding support for HTML5 web content and applications for both the platforms Symbian and MeeGo and Qt.

Samsung Galaxy S To Get Android 2.2 Update In November (Again!)

Just a few days ago, we had reported that Samsung had released the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for the Galaxy S handset. At that time, the update was available only for the Nordic region. However, it looks like Samsung has pulled the update back due to numerous complaints with the firmware including lagging and bugs. However Samsung is working on releasing another Android 2.2 update soon for all the Galaxy S owners. Samsung_Galaxy_S

Today, in a press release Samsung announced that they will be releasing a new Android 2.2 based firmware update for the Galaxy S handsets in early November’ in the UK. Hopefully this new Android 2.2 firmware will fix all the issues the original firmware had. Samsung also mentioned that all Android 2.2 update should hit the different operator versions of the Galaxy S by the end of November.

Being an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S myself, I was completely dis-satisfied with the official-now-pulled-back-firmware (JP6).
