Nokia Looking to Pawn Palm

Quite sometime back, Nokia was undoubtedly the leader in the mobile handset market but quite a few things went wrong for them. Including the popularity of rival iPhone.

When the iPhone launched, Nokia went from being an innovator to a follower. The did come up with Nokia 5300 xPressMusic and later on Nokia N97. That by several standards is pretty good but not as good as the iPhone (when it comes to the touch screen).

Palm has been having lots of problems recently and has lost quite a lot of money even after they came up with Palm Pre. A potential deal with Verizon may set things straight but not actually fill their coffers to the brim.

According to FoneArena there are potential rumors that Nokia might bid to take over Palm and add it to their own company.

This news sent Palm stocks up 1.12$ to 17.07 after a particularly gloomy week. It will be interesting to see where this deal ends up. Nokia has been the biggest player in the international market but still has to create a considerable footprint in the Northern American market.

This has definitely affected the way they are coming out with products and surprises to overcome the NAM market. Where do things go from here? Right now we cannot speculate on rumors but, yes we will keep you posted on how things pan out eventually.

ARM’s new Cortex-A9 Dual Core Processors Capable of 2GHz

ARM processor;
ARM processor

ARM has announced it’s new Two Cortex A9 MPCore hard macro implementations for the TSMC 40nm-G processors, which empowers companies to make high-performance, low-power Cortex-A9 processor-based devices(Smartphones and MIDs). This hard macro implementation will enable devices to operate at frequencies greater than 2GHz easily.

This development is the result of ARM’s interest in advanced physical IP together with processor and fabric IP technology, and leading-edge implementation flows from the EDA industry.

Advanced physical IP techniques have enabled critical circuits within the design to be replaced with highly tuned logic cells and memories, increasing performance while lowering overall power consumption.

Both ARM dual core Cortex-A9 hard macros will share a common seven-power domain, dual-NEON technology configuration supporting SMP (symmetrical multiprocessing) operating systems with up to 8MB of Level2 cache memory and will be delivered with all scripts, vectors and libraries required to integrate the macro directly within any SoC device.

All technicalities aside, this is great news for us users because it promises us great power-packed times ahead.

Nokia to Bundle KOffice Based Office Viewer in Maemo 5 Devices

KOffice is an integrated office suite built on the KDE platform. It makes use of free and open standards like OpenDocument for its document formats, component communication and component embedding.

Their team proudly announced that Nokia has packaged their cross-platform office suite for the Maemo 5 environment with the addition of the new and finger friendly Maemo 5 UI.

It uses a specially designed interface to blend with Maemo 5.  One of the important aims right now   is to help KOffice fine-tune its loading and rendering of MSOffice documents. It should also be noted that all contributions to KOffice have been made directly inside the KOffice subversion repository.

This doc viewer will be shown for the first time at the Maemo Summit in Amsterdam between October the 9th and the 11th. This release is a bit ill timed because the official KOffice2.1 release will likely be one or two weeks later making the Fremantle office use the release candidate at first.

Here is a quick sneak-pic of  KOffice on N900:

MMS or Multimedia messages is a way of sending multimedia content as a short message on mobile phones.

iPhone users had all the goodies but many of them sorely missed the MMS feature a personalized way to share multimedia content with close ones.

Maybe AT&T and Apple always thought that email was the best way to share content, MMS has always been a crowd favorite to make sharing both instant and personal.

According to a official update on the official AT&T account MMS will be available starting Friday, 25th September 2009.

The big question now is that whether AT&T will be able to sustain the additional load on their traffic? Will they start charging iPhone users more for MMS? We will have more details on these things once they officially release this to users.

Nokia Completes LTE Modem

Nokia recently announced that it has completed trials with the first of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) capable Internet Modem.

The trials were conducted upon Nokia Internet Modem RD-3. Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 is not meant to be used by the consumers. The RD-3 can operate on GSM/EDGE as well as WCDMA/HSPA.

Nokia is a founding member in the LTE/SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI) and carries out interoperability testing with a number of network vendors, collaborates with measurement equipment manufacturers and is ready to support operators with their LTE deployment activities. The Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 is used in all these activities, said Jani Mäenpää, Project Manager of Nokia’s LTE/SAE Interoperability and Trials.

Nokia formerly advocating WiMAX 4G standard has now switched its attention to LTE development of high speed 4G wireless. There will be no WIMAX bandwidth not available to LTE. Telenor’s head of network technology strategies, Knut Erik Walter said “LTE is for sure going to lead. HSPA is sufficient until we get to LTE. This is our best way forward.”
