When Android 2.2 was released by Google, HTC had promised that most of their phones launched in 2010 will be getting the update. However, after that only the Desire Android 2.2 update was the most talked about. Now since the Desire Android 2.2 update has already been rolled out or is being rolled out in certain regions, the company has moved on to the small brother of the Desire the Legend.
HTC has confirmed via their Facebook account that they will be rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the Legend in the coming weeks’. Owners of unbranded/unlocked Legend will be among the first one to get the update with operator locked owners getting the update once it has been approved by their carrier.
It’s nice to see HTC offering Android 2.2 update for the Legend. Being a Legend owner myself, I had almost given up hope of the phone getting the Froyo update.
All major tech companies like their employees using their own products instead of their competitors’. Google, Microsoft and Samsung have been known to distribute free phones to their employees as perks.
Dell is now offering to replace its employees’ Blackberrys with brand new Dell Venue Pro phones, powered by Windows Phone 7. The Dell Venue Pro directly competes with the Blackberry Torch, so this move is not entirely out of the blue. Approximately 25000 Dell employees will soon be making the switch.
Dell also plans to provide devices like the Dell Streak, powered by Android to its employees. According to Brian Gladden, Dell’s CFO, the move will save them about 25% in mobile communication costs, by eliminating the need to maintain Blackberry servers.

Nokia has started shipping its third Symbian^3 device on the market beginning from today the Nokia C6-01. The C6-01 is the cheapest Symbian^3 handset from the Finnish giant. The phone sports a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with the new ClearBlack display (CBD) technology. This new technology from Nokia is apparently capable of rivaling Samsung’s Super-AMOLED screen. The phone also features 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS, microSD card slot (expandable up to 32GB) and accelerometer.
The back of the phone packs an 8MP snapper with auto-focus and dual-LED flash to assist night photography. The C6-01 is capable of recording videos in 720p resolution as well. The phone is powered by an ARM11 680MHz processor and packs 340MB of internal memory and 256MB of RAM. The phone also has free worldwide navigation through Nokia’s very own Ovi Maps.
The C6-01 is one of the greenest and eco-friendliest handset from Nokia as well. The phone has been made from bio plastics and recycled metals. Readers should not confuse the C6-01 with Nokia’s C6-00. The latter is a slide-out QWERTY based S60v5 phone.
Yeah, confusing naming scheme! We know!
After so many delays and pull back’, the Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 update has started rolling out officially from today in the U.K. This piece of news was confirmed by Samsung UK tweet. The Android 2.2 update will continue until the end of November. However, the update won’t be an OTA (Over-The-Air) one.
Users who want to update their phone to Android 2.2 need to use the Samsung KIES software to do so. They can download the latest version of KIES from here.
Samsung had earlier released an official Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S but the firmware was so buggy and slow that they had to pull it back. I have already flashed this new official firmware on my Galaxy S and I must say it’s great. The phone is smooth and there are no lags at all.
Hopefully, Samsung will roll out the Android 2.2 firmware update to other countries soon.

A few months ago, Twitter released their official Twitter application for iPhone and the iPad along with the brand new web UI. Today, the folks over at Twitter released a major update for the official Twitter client for Android. The new update brings many new enhancements like Pull To Refresh and Swipe to Reveal etcetera.
Here is the full change-log from the official Twitter blog :
* Tweet details page – We changed the layout of the timeline and introduced a Tweet details page, which you can access by simply clicking on a Tweet. This feature which is already available in Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for iPad and Twitter for Windows Phone makes it easier to click on links and reply to, retweet, or favorite a Tweet.
* Speed – The app is now even faster. In this version, we’ve tried a new way of drawing a timeline of Tweets that optimizes for scrolling speed. Try it out, and you’ll see how much faster and smoother the timeline loads and scrolls.
* Polish – We added some more nice touches to the application as well
* Pull to Refresh – This popular feature, which was first available through our iPhone app, functions just as it sounds when you’re at the top of your timeline, simply pull down to load new Tweets.
* Swipe to Reveal – Swipe across a Tweet to get quick access to several options, such as viewing a user’s profile, sharing a tweet, or replying.
* Quote a Tweet – Clicking the retweet icon now gives you the option to quote a Tweet. Of course, you can still retweet as you normally would
* Hi-res avatar photos
The new version of Twitter For Android is already available on the Android market. It will run on devices running Android 2.1 and above.
Guess what. After opening up the app store a wee bit, web browsers are now heavily in demand in the Apple App store. First Opera Mini for iPhone saw several million downloads and now Skyfire; which was recently launched for the iPhone and converts Flash content to HTML5; has just been knocked out of the app store.
No, Apple did not take out Skyfire, it was taken down by the developers themselves due to heavy demand. In case of Skyfire, Apple did not take them out and instead they themselves stopped sales due to overwhelming demand. If you try to visit the app store link for Skyfire, you will see a notice as displayed below.
Unlike Opera, which is free, Skyfire is priced at $2.99, but the number of sales they got resulted in bad user experience for the video conversions. The developers blogged about taking the app out of the app store:
Skyfire for iPhone has been received with unbelievable enthusiasm. Despite our best attempts and predictions, the demand far exceeds our initial projections.
The user experience was performing well for the first few hours, but as the surge continued, the peak load on our servers and bandwidth caused the video experience to degrade.
Thus we are effectively sold out’ and will temporarily not accept new purchases from the App Store. We are working really hard to increase capacity and will be accepting new purchases from the App Store as soon as we can support it.
We are very grateful for the demand. Within 5 hours, Skyfire for iPhone became the top grossing app, the third highest paid app overall and the top application in the Utilities category. Wow!
So within 5 hours of being released, users managed to take down the app out of the app store, which suggests that they might have roughly sold anywhere between 300K to 750K copies. Now, that’s not bad business at all for 5 hours, is it?
It was a week ago MeeGo v1.1 for handsets was officially released, and today the modding community has managed to port it to the Nexus One. We had reported earlier that the modding community was trying to port MeeGo OS to the Nexus One, HTC Desire etcetera. However, the developers were facing many performance related issues and driver issues.
However, the latest version of MeeGo OS v1.1 has been optimized for handsets and thus the performance of the OS is pretty smooth on the Nexus One. This makes the Nexus One the second phone unofficially to run the MeeGo OS. The Nokia N900 being the first.
Users who are interested in running MeeGo OS on their Nexus One need to make sure that they have a microSD card. The steps to run MeeGo v1.1 OS on your Nexus One can be found here.
