Lava Unveils The Intel Atom Powered XOLO X900 Handset

Intel in association with a small time local handset maker in India – Lava – released the first Medfield SoC sporting handset – the XOLO X900. Inside the XOLO X900 is a Intel Atom Z460 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, along with HyperThreading technology. The CPU is coupled by a PowerVR SGX540 GPU clocked at 400MHz. Considering this is the first handset ever to be released to consumers to sport an Intel SoC, it would be interesting to see how the single core Atom processor from Intel will stack up against its competitors like Qualcomm’s S4 and Samsung’s Exynos quad-core SoCs. It would be also interesting to see how battery efficient is the Intel Atom processor inside a handset.

“Through XOLO X900, we are happy to bring to the Indian market a device that addresses the needs of those for whom speed and performance matters. After our success in feature phones with over 10 million happy customers in under 3 years, XOLO will be a differentiated player in the fast-growing smartphone segment. The initial reviews of XOLO X900 have been very positive and independent benchmarks clearly point to the fact that when it comes to speed and performance, XOLO X900 is the gold standard,” said Vishal Sehgal, co-founder and director, Lava International.

Other than the SoC, the X900 packs in a 4.03-inch LCD with WVGA (800*480) resolution, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP camera capable of recording 1080p HD videos and the usual bunch of sensors and connectivity options. Sadly, the X900 runs on stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box, but Lava and Intel have promised that a stock Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the handset will be available “shortly”.

The XOLO X900 will be available from 23rd April at Croma and other retail stores in India with a street price of approximately Rs 22,000.
