Jelly Bean Music Player Up And Running On Android 2.2+ Devices

Google revamped the stock Android music player in Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), which was meant for tablets. When Google unveiled Google Play Music along with the ability to upload all your music to cloud, and stream it right from the cloud, it also updated Play Music for Android handsets. In Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, the Play Music app got further UI enhancements and tweaks.

The Play Music app is even available for download from the Google Play Store, but it is for some strange reason restricted only to certain regions of the world where Google Play Music is available. Besides this region restriction, the latest version of Play Music, found in Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean is only available for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. This leaves more than 88% of Android users out there in the dust.

Thankfully, an XDA member has managed to get the Google Play Music app to work on Android 2.2 (FroYo)+ devices without any issues. All he did was to recompile the APK with the target SDK version fet to 8 instead of the original 14.

Interested readers should head over to this thread on XDA for the download link.
