iPhone 4 Jailbreak/Unlock for iOS 4 Might Take Some Time

Over the past couple of days lot of things happened. Apple released and within a few hours an unlock for baseband 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04 was released, and within few more hours several jailbreaks were released.

However, if you are someone buying an and looking for a jailbreak or unlock, don’t expect it to come out soon. The jailbreaks available right now are limited to the 3G and iPod Touch 2G. However, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G running iOS 4 have yet to be jailbroken yet.

Considering how easy it was to create an unlock and jailbreak for the older devices, the newer devices should have been jailbroken by now too. However, they have not, and considering the number of updates in the past day, Apple has made it really hard for the iPhone Dev team and other folks working on jailbreaks and unlocks.

Earlier too, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G users had to wait a while before the Spirit jailbreak was made available, and this time will be no different. iPhone 4, which have already begun shipping and will also be available at Best Buy and Walmart starting tomorrow will most likely not see any jailbreaks or unlocks for a few days or weeks for that matter.

So, if you are anticipating a jailbreak and unlock for iPhone 4, you might have to wait a few days, or maybe few weeks before you can use the features Apple does not want you to. What about you, how long do you think before a jailbreak and unlock for the iPhone will become available to users?

They haven't release a jailbreak because they dont want the exploit patched for when the iphone 4 is released. Check out some of the news.

I have a 3gs Jb with Spirit when can I use with the new IOS4????

  • I just got the iPhone 4 today and while I was in line, I spoke to various ppl from all walks of life. Some who are involved in jailbreaking hands on. Expect it in weeks, possibly even 2-3 mo. The reason is, sooner than you think, iOS 4.x.x will be out to fix the signal reception bug and a few other bugs. So, a jailbreak released now is improbable. I heard FaceTime has an exploit and so does multitasking but we’ll see.

If you have a 3GS with older bootROM that’s already been jailbroken via Pwnagetool (custom IPSW) or redsn0w (not Spirit), then you can move up to iOS 4 and maintain jailbreak using the Pwnagetool 4.0.1. So, a JB 3GS with iOS 4.0 is a possible configuration and I’ve been running my phone this way for several days now.

Likewise, if you have a 3GS with older bootROM at 3.xx, you can jailbreak there and then move up to iOS 4. If you’ve moved to iOS 4 already by mistake and you happen to have your SHSH blobs cached using Umbrella or Cydia’s service, you can downgrade to 3.xx that way, then jailbreak and move up to iOS 4.0 via Pwnagetool 4.0.1 as above.

So, as far as the 3GS old bootROM is concerned, the only time you can’t move to JB iOS 4.0 is if you’ve already updated to iOS 4.0 without saving your SHSH blobs first.

I can't take advice from the person who said

"Apple has made it really harder for the iPhone Dev team and other folks working on jailbreaks and unlocks more hard."

    • @IVXXFriendly – Sorry about the bad English, sometimes a slip happens and it does not necessarily mean that there is problem with the content itself.

No one is perfect and even some of the top journalists make mistakes in a hurry. I am sorry that you have had to judge this post based on a silly mistake I made.

Thanks again and the content has been corrected to reflect proper grammar.

      • Philip

Even your retort is riddled with poor grammar.

        • Andrew

          No, it isn't, Philip.

          Thanks for the great article!

  • Judging from the author's profile, I'd say English might not be his first language. Good job trying to be a grammar Nazi and just coming off as a jerk. As far as the Jailbreak, considering how quickly they managed to JB iOS4 in general, I imagine that once the first couple of updates from Apple come out we will see guides on jailbreaking. It's kind of Apple's turn to play their hand, the jailbreak guys just have to wait their turns.
