Android Market Now Has 400K Apps!

The growth of Android as a mobile OS has been staggering. In fact, no other product, technology or gadget has achieved a mind-numbing rate of growth as Android.  Last month, Andy Rubin had tweeted that there are more than 700,000 Android devices are activated daily.

Now, one app store analytics tool – Distimo – has announced that there are now more than 400,000 apps in the Android Market. The company also stated that majority of the applications – up to 68% – are free or freemium. This makes the Android Market the biggest app store with free apps.

The rate of growth of the Android Market, like the OS, is truly staggering. The Market crossed the 200k apps back in April 2011, and the 300k target in August 2011. The iOS App Store need 8 more months to breach the 300k mark, and 7 months to breach the 400k mark.  At the moment, the Android Market has only 100,000 apps less than the Apple’s App Store. If the Market is able to sustain its current growth rate, it will only be a matter of time before it crosses the Apple’s App Store to become the biggest Application market.
