The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc was announced just yesterday at CES 2011, and is truly a magnificent phone. It has some really good hardware specifications and comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, at least according to the official spec sheet. However, it turns out that the Xperia Arc actually has Android 2.4, which is still called Gingerbread.
It seems that Android 2.4 doesn’t add many features or improvements to Android 2.3, hence both share the same name. There is some performance improvement as well as better visual animations. It also has a noise reduction option and video calling features.
This won’t be the first time that Google has launched two Android versions with the same name – Android 2.0 and 2.1 were both called Eclair. Before the launch of Android 3.0 Honeycomb – the tablet version of Android, we should see the launch of Android 2.4 Gingerbread.
