Criticism Of The New Windows 8 Logo Leads To $300 99Designs Contest

If you have a lot of pent-up rage about the recently announced, new, Windows 8 logo, you’re not alone. A 99Designs contest has been started by site user “inFlowInventory”, offering a guaranteed cash prize for one lucky designer. 99Designs is a popular “crowdsourcing” service, in which someone seeking a design would offer cash, and designers would submit mockups in a battle to be selected.

Chosen designers will make it to the finalist rounds, after which a final decision is made, and a winner is selected. That’s exactly what’s going on here. At the discretion of the contest creator (emphasis on this; the winner will be selected entirely off of his judgement/taste of the contest holder), a winner will be selected who will receive a cash prize of $295.

So far, there’s quite a mixture of good, bad, ugly, and rehashed revisions of the current (well, newly announced) logo. My favorite is the one above. If you do wish to enter, keep in mind that there’s only about 2 days and 9 hours to do so at the time of writing. Perhaps though, considering that this has been spreading throughout the blogosphere, the contest holder may extend the entry time. Even if it’s unlikely that you will win, entering would still be worth it in the name of fun.

Just in case it wasn’t made clear throughout this article: This is a third-party contest that has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft. So no, your design will not replace what was already announced.
