Reliance Telecommunication has placed an order worth Rs. 340cr for two million CDMA handsets from Chinese telecom vendor Huawei Technologies. Reliance plans to roll out these devices within next week.
These CDMA handsets will be priced in the range of Rs 1,700-1,950 each device and will come with bundled value-added services (VAS). The device also comes with camera and FM radio and have a one-press access to the VAS platform. The RCom will deploy these handsets in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
We are leveraging our extensive CDMA capabilities to drive VAS revenues as part of a larger business growth plan, said Krishna Durbha, head, VAS, Reliance Communications. The decline in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) has been the major concern for most of the operators due to the telecom price war in the market. Reliance will offer a free bundled wallpaper pack from its R-World platform along with these handsets. The handset comes with a browser that enables customers to access entertainment-based VAS services, thus trying out a way to increase ARPU. R-world would mostly offer bollywood and cricket contents, which sells more.
