Apple iPad 2 Launching in India by April End?

Apple launched the iPad 2 more than a month back, but like always, it ignored India during the initial launch phase. Besides, it just launched the iPad in India, so it was unlikely that it would launch the iPad 2 anytime soon.

However, Apple COO, Tim Cook revealed during its Q2 2011 earnings call that the iPad 2 will be launched in 13 new countries next week. That was a ray of hope for Indian Apple fans who have been dying to buy the iPad 2.

Apple has also been featuring the iPad 2 quite prominently on the Apple India homepage, which would usually mean that it is contemplating a launch in India. Today, OnlyGizmos reported that a “trusted source” has confirmed that the Apple iPad 2 will be launching in India next week. It will be launched at Croma, Vijay Sales and Reliance iStores. It will be priced at the same price points the iPad was originally launched at. The 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 would be priced at Rs 27,900 while the 16 GB 3G+Wi-Fi iPad 2 will be priced at 34,900.

The exact launch date is expected to be April 28 or 29.

Nokia’s Ovi Pushmail Banned In India

The Department of Telecom (DoT) in India has pulled the plug on Nokia’s Push e-mail service and has asked various telecom service providers to deny or disable user access to Nokia’s pushmail or the powermail Ovi service until Nokia comes up with a legal monitoring system for various defence and security agencies.

This decision comes amidst the Government’s decision to ban all Blackberry services in India. According to the Ministry of Home affairs’ communication to the Department of Telecom, the deptt. is requested to advice the Telecom Service Providers not to launch Nokia’s proposed pushmail/powermail service without putting in place monitoring facilities to the satisfaction of the LEAs.

This news definitely comes as a shock to Nokia as it may lose major user base given the fact that nearly 50 per cent of Nokia’s E Series business phones which are sold in India get activated primarily for e-mails. Nokia’s ovi Pushmail service allows mobile users to manage multiple email accounts on Yahoo!, Gmail, Rediff to Sify at once.

Telecom Licenses Update: 4 Categories Proposed; Renewal Every 10 Years

The Department Of Telecom (DoT) has come up with some groundbreaking changes to the current licensing scheme for telecom operators in India which might lead to a better service for consumers. The DoT has proposed a new licensing scheme, under which four types of licences would be issued instead of the Unified Access Service License which is provided as of now:

  • Unified Licence: To be issued to service providers. Currently service providers are bound by the Unified Access Service Licence.
  • Class Licence: To be issued to VSAT service providers.

  • License through Authorisation

  • Broadcasting licence

In addition to this new licensing scheme, telecom operators would be required to renew their licenses every 10 years as the new proposal suggests that telecom licences will be given for a period of 10 years only.

According to the current licensing, operators are allowed to hold on to their licenses for a 20-year period. However, with the new licensing scheme, old operators like Bharti Airtel will have to apply for renewal as soon as their current licensing period gets over.
