In an attempt to trigger a price war in the recently adopted 3G technology, MTNL Mumbai has launched Unlimited 3G Data Plan for just INR 750. And it’s a true unlimited plan unlike other operators (looking at Airtel) who in the name of unlimited have a FUP of 20GB.
But of course there’s a catch in the MTNL offer. In order to avail the INR 750 plan users need to subscribe for 6 months plan in advance. That is, when you get the INR 4500 package which is valid for six months it dilutes to INR 750 per month. Quite smart. If you do not want to risk subscribing for six months you can try out their two months Unlimited package for INR 2500 which boils down to INR 1250 per month.
MTNL already has a similar plan in Delhi circle and just like in Delhi, MTNL Mumbai also has a 200GB cap which when a user hits, excess charges are waved off. Which means this service is truly Unlimited.
U2opia Mobile, a Singapore-based software applications developer has developed a new application for mobile phones that will allow users to access Facebook without paying for a data connection and works well on all handsets.
Mr Sumesh Menon, said,
It is like SMS and hence, the load on the network is negligible. We have built some commands through which a user can receive alerts on activity happening on his wall as well post an update.
The company has developed this application using USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) technology. USSD is a protocol used by GSM cellular telephones to communicate with the service provider’s computers. It is mainly used for sending alerts to users that give information about balance or for sending missed call alerts.
U2opia launched this application with Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel.
Airtel users can dial *325# (*fbk# for non-qwerty phones) to access Facebook without subscribing to data plans.
Shireesh Joshi, Bharti Airtel Director – Marketing, Mobile Services, said in a statement
In the Indian market scenario, where the penetration of smart phones is relatively low and the use of Internet on mobiles is primarily limited to key cities, many users are excluded from accessing their Facebook accounts via mobile phones

The broadband internet connection scenario in India is deteriorating gradually. If you are finding hard to believe this then you do not have any other option than believing this. India ranks very poorly on the list of 25 developing nations which were the part of a new global report as compiled and published by Nokia Siemens Networks.
Here are a few noteworthy points from the report:
- India’s broadband penetration rate, which is measured as number of subscribers per 100 households is around one eighth of the rate that has been achieved in China.
- India does not perform well even when it comes to Mobile internet penetration and lies behind even the Latin American countries when it comes to Mobile internet.
- India has a score of 1.25 on the Broadband Connectivity Scorecard whereas Malaysia and Chile have have got a score of 6 which almost 4 times that of India’s score.
- The four countries which India ranks ahead of are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Kenya respectively.
Akamai Technologies, an internet company that addresses problems associated with the Internet such as performance, security and scalability has found out in a separate report that there has been a 9.1% overall decrease in internet connection speeds. By the end of 2010, almost 35 per cent of all internet connections in India metered an average speed of 256 kbps.
Mobile banking in India is slowly catching up as various service providers are tie-ing up different banks in order to provide banking services to their customers right on their finger tips. Reliance communications also announced the launch of it’s mobile banking services for its GSM subscribers.
This mobile banking service is in collaboration with the State Bank of India(SBI) which means as of now only those customers having an active banking account with State Bank of India will be able to use the mobile banking facility on Reliance. These facilities include account balance enquiry, mini statement, fund transfer, cheque book issuance, mobile recharge and bill payment at any time just by using a mobile phone.
