EC Media, a Bangalore based startup yesterday launched an eBook reader – the Wink, at a press conference in Mumbai. The Wink will be tailored to Indian needs. It will be available across the country at Croma stores from September 1.
They claim to have over 200,000 titles available for download. They also offer newspapers, magazines and journals for download. Books in Indian languages are also available.
The Wink is very similar to the Amazon Kindle. It will have a 6 inch e-ink display and 2 GB internal storage. It will be available in 2 versions – Wink XTS (Wi-Fi only) and Wink X3G (Wi-Fi + 3G). It has an SD card slot as well as a built in MP3 player with a 3.5 mm audio jack. It also has a QWERTY keyboard and supports email. The device can read TXT, RTF, PDF, DOC, HTML, WOLF, CHM, FB2, DJVU and EPUB files. It has a 400 MHz ARM9 processor with a Li-ion 1500 mAh battery and dimensions of 185 x 124.6 x 10.9 mm.
The Wink XTS will retail for Rs. 11,490 while the Wink X3G will be priced at Rs. 14,990. Both the versions are quite pricey, especially when eBook reader prices are falling around the world. The Amazon Kindle Wi-Fi sells for just $139 now.
