If you use a laptop then you will definitely know the ease of taking your computer around, another added feature is that you may not need to shutdown your computer as frequently you shutdown a desktop. Though the theory about shutting down a desktop can be wrong too.

I have gone with a couple of weeks without shutting down my laptop constantly putting it on hibernate and standby mode. In fact the only time I shut down my laptop is when I really need to when its running really slow or when some updates have been installed.

Coming back to the point, I always used to wonder how long my laptop has been up since it has been restarted (uptime). The curiosity is just for a statistical view though. I tried searching for various tools in which I could that but was not satisfied until I came something that was sitting on my computer all along. Windows XP has a built in command that shows this info to you without using any other software.

Systeminfo is a command that shows you information about your computer. The uptime of the computer is just a command away with systeminfo. To see this information all you have to do is use the hotkey Windows + R and key in cmd or run the command prompt by using the start menu.

In the command prompt that has opened key in the command “systeminfo” without the quotes and press enter or return key. Once the command runs you will see a lot of information. Look for System Up Time which shows you the amount of time windows has been running since the last restart. Note this includes standby and hibernate times too.
