Windows Seven : Start Exploring From (My)Computer

Windows Seven is a highly polished release which gets most of the things right. However there are a few minor annoyances here and there. We already shared how to fix the Windows Seven Taskbar (Superbar) idiosyncrasies with Taskbar Overlord. Today we will share another little tip to improve your Windows Seven experience.

By default when you click on the Windows Explorer button in the taskbar your Libraries folder is opened. This is nice if you have your content neatly organized into multiple Libraries. However, most people that I know would simply prefer to begin exploring from (My)Computer.

Right click on Explorer Icon and then again right click on Windows Explorer entry in the Jump List. Select ‘Properties’ from the context menu. Change the target from %windir%\explorer.exe to %windir%\explorer.exe /e,::{20d04fe0-3aea-1069-a2d8-08002b30309d}. Click on OK to save the settings.

Windows Seven - Being Exploring from Computer

That’s it. From now onwards, clicking on the Windows Explorer button would open (My)Computer instead of Libraries.

How To Open/Mount .img and .ima Files?

Sometimes you may come across files that have weird extensions .img and .ima are couple of them, first of these files may not be regular image files, but actually image copies of a drive or folder.

Img/Ima files are very similar to , however many softwares use .img and .ima format to store information.

According to Wikipedia a IMG file format can be any of these things;

  1. A CD or DVD image file, essentially equivalent to an ISO file. On such a file, simply changing the extension from IMG to ISO can make it usable as the latter by most programs.
  2. An archive format used for creating a disk image of floppy disks and HDDs. This allows for digital storage, transmission, and replication of floppy disks and HDDs. Files created using this format typically use the “.IMG” file extension.
  3. A file in the Macintosh Disk Image format.
  4. A graphics image format used in various ways by many different graphics software packages.

To open a .img or .ima file or mount it as a virtual drive you can use a software called Magic Disc, you can learn about how you can mount img files in this tutorial on mounting ISO files as a virtual drive, though the tutorial talks about ISO files, .img and .ima files can also be mounted in a similar way.

How to Run AntiVirus on a PC That Will Not Boot

Three Questions, One Answer

  • How can you run a virus scan if you can’t get Windows up and running?
  • How can you use a different brand of antivirus on a PC that you don’t have administrative rights to?
  • How can you run an up to date virus scan on a PC that does not have an internet connection?

Do you have any suggestions?

Free Rescue CDs

In my opinion, the simplest solution is using a Live Emergency Rescue CD. It’s most likely to work in all three cases as long as the PC can boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Many of the leading AntiVirus vendors offer a bootable CD with their brand of antivirus on it. Here is the typical procedure for using them.

  1. Download an ISO or other CD image file from the AV vendor (See downloads below)
  2. Burn the image to a CD (How?)
  3. Insert the CD into an infected PC and reboot

Notes on Use

The rescue CDs that I’ve used often boot up quickly. Once booted, many of them ask you what you want to scan and how you want to handle suspected infections. If you can set the AV scanner to automatically report or remove infections, you can typically walk away from the PC while it’s working and come back after it’s done.

There is one drawback. Most of these rescue CDs can’t be easily updated. If you keep using one too long, it’s less likely to detect the latest infections. I recommend that you always download the latest ISO and burn a new CD. The cost of a blank CD is well worth the extra time and headaches that an Emergency Rescue CD can save you.

How to Fix Default Zip File Behavior

Recently, one of my friends asked me this question via email.

A few years ago, I received a .rar file via email.   I was unfamiliar with this filetype and after I researched it on the Internet, I found 7zip and used it to open the archive.

Some time after that I uninstalled 7zip but somehow messed up my zip file association.   Now whenever I try to create a .zip file, I get the attached message.   I click Yes, and the system will create the .zip archive, but the message still shows up each time.   The file association shows that “Compressed (zipped) Folders” is associated to .zip files, so I don’t know what the issue is.

cn_xpziperror_01

Text of the error message: (Windows XP)
For Compressed (zipped) Folders to handle ZIP files correctly, the application associated with them must be Compressed (zipped) Folders. Currently this is not the case.

Do you want to designate Compressed (zipped) Folders as the application for handling ZIP files?

This problem wasn’t unfamiliar to me. I had similar problems back in the days of Windows ME. However, I couldn’t remember the solution. I did vaguely recall that someone had developed a tiny freeware utility that helped fix most ZIP issues.

I did a quick web search and learned that the zipfldr.dll file wasn’t registered properly. A couple of simple commands finally fixed my friend’s problem.

Enable or Disable Compressed Folders in Windows XP

If you are running Vista or Win7, go to the end of this article.

You can enable ZIP handling by Windows Compressed Folders if you have a problem using it. You can also disable it if you’d rather use a different archive manager like 7Zip.

  • Click your Start button
  • Select Run
  • Paste one of the two following commands into the Run box
  • Press the Enter Key
  • Reboot

This command will enable the use of Compressed Folders
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

This command will disable the use of Compressed Folders
regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

cn_xpziperror_02

In my friend’s case, he told me that he had to run both commands. He disabled then enabled to get the Compressed Folders working again.

You may also want to make sure that the ZIP filetype is associated with Compressed Folders. Here’s how to do that if you don’t already know.

First, open My Computerby selecting it in your Start menu or by double clicking it on your Desktop.

Next, choose the Tools menu.

cn_xpziperror_03

Then choose Folder Options.

cn_xpziperror_04

Finally, use the File Types tab and scroll down until you see the entry for ZIP. As shown below, it should be associated with Compressed Folders. If it’s not, you can typically hit the Change button below and choose Compressed Folders from the list of programs that will be displayed. You must also place a check mark next to the   Always use …box before you press OK on the Change dialog.

An Easier Way to Take Control of Compressed Folders

By the way, I finally did find the little utility that gives you control over the default ZIP behavior. I had it stashed away on one of my hard drives. It’s called the Windows-XP-ZIP-Support-Control, and it looks like this.

cn_xpziperror_06

Isn’t that sweet? As far as I know, it does everything I talked about above by simply clicking buttons. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone developed something like this for Vista or Win7?

Enable or Disable Compressed Folders in Windows Vista and Windows 7

I recommend a visit Annoyances.org for instructions on disabling or repairing the default ZIP integration in Windows Vista or Windows 7.

How to Find Files Fast Using DOS and Notepad

Do you have a large hard drive? Mine isn’t very big, but I’ve still got over 90,000 files on it.

When I use Windows built in search tool to search for files, it seems to take ages for it to even start looking. It’s almost like the search tool wakes from a deep sleep and decides to start work after a cup of coffee. I can’t blame it, I feel the same way most mornings.

cn_findfiles_np_01

The solution I’ve come up with works for me and maybe it’ll work for you as well. It doesn’t require any tools that aren’t already on your Windows machine.

I wanted to search a network drive with over 600,000 files on it. Windows searches were taking up to half an hour to produce results. I was prepared to take a lunch break when I initiated a search.

I decided to fall back on my rusty old skills as a DOS batch file guru.

I wrote up a single line of text in Notepad with the following command on it where M: was the network drive I wanted to search.

DIR /B /S M:\*.* > C:\M_file_list.txt

cn_findfiles_np_02

Then I saved the file as a .BAT file in a handy location.

Double clicking the BAT file launched it. When I launch a batch file, it helps if I stand and pronounce this chant in a loud voice with both hands raised over the PC.

By the Power of DOS, I command you!

That really works best in a quiet room full of people who have no clue what I’m doing.

Fifteen minutes later, I had a text list that included the full path of all 600,000 files on the M: drive.

cn_findfiles_np_03

Now whenever I need to find a file, I open up the M_file_list text file and hit F3 or CTRL+F to open up the text search dialog.

Searching the text file is hundreds of times faster than Windows standard search was taking. The search takes around   5 or 10 seconds instead of half an hour. That does cut into my long lunch breaks, but we all have to sacrifice things in these hard times.

cn_findfiles_np_04

cn_findfiles_np_05

When I find the file I want, I copy the file path and paste it into the Start -> Run menu, to open the folder or the file itself.

Happy searching!

You can leave out the chanting if you have to.

Google Reader Send To Su.pr Button

In the past we have covered several custom Google Send To buttons for , however one of our readers recently asked us that he wanted to create a custom Google Reader Send to button to send a article to Su.pr the URL shortening service from StumbleUpon.

google_reader_supr_custom_button

The benefits of sending a link to su.pr is that you get custom analytics and more. You can find out all about it in our Su.pr review.

Here is a tutorial on how you can add a custom Google Reader send to button for su.pr, if you are new to adding custom buttons read our earlier tutorial on adding custom send to buttons to Google Reader.

Creating Link To Submit To Su.pr API

We will be using the API provided by su.pr, the first thing is to get the URL that will allow you to use the su.pr API to submit content to it, you will find the basic URL below.

http://su.pr/api/post?msg=Hello World! http://www.youurl.com&services;[]=twitter&services;[]=facebook&login=yourusername&apiKey=yourapikey

Now taking this as the base URL, we replace the required things and create the URL we will use in Google Reader.

http://su.pr/api/post?msg=${title} ${url}&services;[]=twitter&services;[]=facebook&login=yourusername&apiKey=yourapikey

The text that we have marked in bold green is the services su.pr will post the URL too, if you do not want to post to or please remove this from the URL.

The text marked in red should be replaced with your own su.pr username and API key which you will find under the settings in your su.pr account (direct link).

Creating Custom Google Reader Send To Button for Su.pr

Once you have created the URL we require for submitting a link to su.pr using a custom button, head to the settings page in Google Reader and go to the Send To and create a custom link (follow this tutorial if you don’t know how to).

Here are the parameters you will require;

Name: Su.pr
URL: The One we created above
Icon URL: http://cdn.stumble-upon.com/favicon.ico

Once you have added the params click on save button.

Submitting Content To Su.pr From Google Reader

Sending link to Su.pr is the same, use the send to menu to send links to su.pr.

supr_send_to_button_response

However the response you may see might be weird, but don’t worry if you created the right URL the content will be submitted to su.pr, you can confirm that by visiting your su.pr account.

Hope this helps all you su.pr lovers who want better stats and use Google Reader to share content using the Send To button.
