What is a .PLS File? How to Open .PLS Files?

Like previously mentioned playlist format M3U, PLS is also a similar file format standard for creating playlists in media players, but in fact is a much more expressive format than the other counterpart.

A PLS file can retain song cache information, like its length unlike M3U. Being just a playlist file, it does not contain any music files in itself, but rather point to music files stored elsewhere. The PLS file format is often used to redirect to Internet radio streams, for example, if you want to play a radio stream from Shoutcast, you can copy the PLS file url of the station from the site and play it in a desktop media player like Winamp, Foobar, iTunes or VLC. You will have to use the Add Location Or URL option in the media players to add the stream and listen to it.

PLS files are not supported in Windows Media Player, unless you install third party codecs, like the K-Lite Code Pack.

Bypass Megavideo Time Limit

Update: February 16, 2011 – We have added another way to bypass the Megaupload limit at the bottom of the post.

Sometime back we told you about a trick to bypass the time limits imposed by Megavideo a popular site for watching videos. Megavideo imposes a limit of 72 minutes of continuous video watching till it pops up a alert saying that you need to wait for a certain time before you can watch the video.

This can be quite annoying when you want to watch longer videos continuously for free. The trick we told you previously helped many users to bypass those limits, however, we came across some new tricks to bypass the limit.

The first one includes getting a new video URL by visiting Mega Streaming and using it to watch the video instead of the regular Megavideo URL. The second one includes using a called IIIitmux.

You will need to generate the URL and use the add-on before you start watching the video. Have fun watching full videos at Megavideo without interruptions.  Bypass Megavideo time limits [via Life Hacker]

Update: You can now use a new site called http://megaskipper.com/ to bypass the megavideo time limit or 72 minute restriction. The site also provides a Google Chrome extension which you can use to directly open the Megavideo videos in Mega Skipper.

How to Open .M3U Files?

.M3U files is a common standard used in creating MP3 Playlists’. An M3U file is basically a plain text file that stores the location of different media that the mediaplayer should play. It is not the media file itself but rather a pin-pointing mechanism for them.

An M3U file simply tells the player where the real song track is located and in what order is the song list to be played. Originally, Winamp was the first player to support this format, but slowly with time, M3U has become the de facto format for media playlists. Mostly all desktop media players now support M3U playlists, and you can play and create playlists from within the application.

If you have an M3U file on your computer, you should be able to play it with any music player installed on your system. On Windows, just right click the file > Select Open As’ > Select the player you wish to play it with.

As made obvious, M3U files can’t be burnt to CDs and other devices as such because they just point to the original media. When transferring you songs from your computer to another device, make sure you transfer the real files instead of M3U playlists.

How To Create The Tilt Shift Effect In Your Photos

You must have come across many photos that focus on a small part of the image while rest of the thing is just a blurry background. This is called the Tilt Shift effect. For example look at the picture below, it only focuses on the car and the street while everything else is just a blur.

Now look at the original photo:

Usually this would take a significant time and skill to accomplish but I will show you how to do it in less than 30 seconds. They key is a great tool called Tilt Shift Generator.

Once you have downloaded and installed the Adobe AIR based tool from here, simple open the image you want to create the tilt shift effect in. You will now see a small white circle over the picture, simple click on the area of the picture that you want to focus on. You will see that rest of the image will automatically go blur. You can also change the size of the focused area by dragging the big white dot at the border of the circle.

Dragging it clockwise increase the size of the focused area while dragging it anti-clockwise reduces it. You can also accomplish this by adjusting the settings on your left hand side.

This is it! Simply save the modified picture and show off.

Here is a short video where I have tried to create a Tilt Shift effect in the photos above.

How To Disable Windows 7 Taskbar Tab Preview in Firefox 3.6

If you have used Firefox the Firefox 3.6 beta, you have probably noticed that Mozilla has introduced support for Windows 7 taskbar thumbnails. Firefox 3.6 allows you to directly select a tab from the taskbar. This is similar to how Internet Explorer 8 behaves in Windows 7. Some people love this behaviour while others find it annoying. I happen to belong to the latter group. I am a heavy multi-tasker and often have dozens of open tabs organised into multiple windows. Taskbar tab previews doesn’t make any distinction between tabs from different windows and is a major productivity bump.

If you find taskbar tab previews irritating, here is a quick way to get rid of them.

  • Type about:config in the awesome bar (address bar). Ignore the caution message and proceed.
  • Type browser.taskbar.previews.enable in the filter bar.
  • Disable-Taskbar-Tab-Preview-Thumbnail-in-Firefox-3.6

  • Now, you will be displayed a single entry whose current value is True. Double click on the entry to change its value to False.

That’s it. Firefox should instantly stop displaying tab previews in the taskbar.

How to Create Your Own Wifi Hotspot in Windows 7

connectify-program-icon A few weeks ago, a new application, called Connectify, appeared on the net. It made use of an unfinished feature in Win7 to make it easy to create personal wifi connections that can be shared with others. Please note that this application only works in Windows 7.

Recently, Connectify has been updated so that you can name the wifi connection that you create. Here’s how it works.

● Download the Connectify client
● Install it
● Look for the Connectify icon in the system tray

● Click on the icon once to open it

● Set the wifi name
● Set a password of 8 characters or more
● Select either Local or Wireless in the pull down
● Click the “Start Hotspot” button

As you can see, I’ve created a wifi hotspot named “Sky.net”. In this case, I’m fairly sure it won’t become super-intelligent and try to destroy humanity. (see wikipedia about skynet)

Once it’s live, anyone with your password can connect to your hotspot. Connectify even identifies PCs and devices that are connected to it. You can see them in the window labeled “Connected Clients”. If you double click on a connected client, you can change the little icon next to it to make it easier to identify at a glance.

Techie-Buzz Verdict: If you would like to share your internet connection wirelessly in your home or on the road, you could not ask for an easier way to do it. I have no problems giving this app a hearty recommendation.

How To Reduce Aero Peek’s Delay Time

One of the many new features in Windows 7 is Aero Peek. Just hover the mouse pointer over the extreme right edge of your taskbar and Windows will reveal the desktop. To be honest, I don’t really like Aero Peek in fact I find it pretty much pointless. But, a lot of people seem to love it. If you indeed find Aero Peek beneficial, here is a small tip to make it more convenient.

In order to avoid accidental triggering, Aero Peek doesn’t get activated immediately. Instead you need to wait for about half a second. This delay is mostly unnecessary and can be annoying. Fortunately for us, it is quite easy to make Aero Peek trigger instantly.

  1. Type regedit in the Start Menu or the Run (Win + R) box. This will launch the Windows Registry Editor.
  2. Now browse to the following location:

  3. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value DesktopLivePreviewHoverTime from the Edit Menu.
  4. Aero-Peek-Create-DWORD

  5. Double click on this entry to edit its value. Set the base to Decimal and enter 0 as the value. You can actually enter any delay value you wish. Just remember that the unit of time used here is millisecond (1000ms=1s).
  6. Aero-Peek-Create-No-Delay

  7. That’s it. All you need to do now is logoff or restart to see the changes.

If you don’t want to go through all this trouble, you can also download this registry script. Simply double click on the script (.reg file) to apply the tweak.

Of course, if you don’t like Aero Peek and find it pointless, you should disable it entirely. Right click on an empty spot in the taskbar and select Properties. Uncheck the box next to Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop to disable Aero Peek.
