How To Disable Google Analytics

Recently we got a query from one of our users who asked us on how they can delete their information from Google Analytics. Though it is not usually possible for people to do it, we wanted to give everyone a general idea on how you can disable or block Google Analytics.

Google Analytics is a website tracking software which can track your IP address, browser information, operating system, country and more when you visit a website. This information is usually available with both Google and also with the website you visit.

Google Analytics Logo

Google Analytics is not the only one who collects such information and several websites may use different analytics software to do it, and may also have their own internal tracking. Disabling analytics cannot be done through a simple JavaScript block since many website analytics software also use image tracking.

Most of the analytics software do not provide end-users with a way to opt-out. However, Google does provide users with an option to disable Google Analytics using browser based add-ons for Firefox, IE and . We had written about the Google Analytics Blocker in the past and you can download the add-on for your own browser by visiting this URL.

Once you install this add-on Google Analytics will no longer track your visits to websites which make use of their service. We will keep an eye for other services which disable analytics for other services and let you know once we come across something.

Recover Unsaved Posts In Windows Live Writer After a Crash

Earlier today, I had a system crash which ended up me having to reset the computer through the power button. Unfortunately, I had 4 Windows Live Writer windows open with different posts I was researching about. Now, I had done quite a few hours of work with those posts and losing them would definitely be a pain in the posterior.

With Windows Live Writer 3, I had an option to automatically save posts after 2 minutes, however, To my surprise and annoyance WLW 4 which is included in Windows Live Essentials Beta does not include an option to automatically save posts after a certain time. Now, I had thought that I had lost all the work and had to rewrite all the posts again, but was saved all the double work.

windows_live_writer_4_crash_recovery

Thankfully Microsoft has added a new feature which allowed for an Auto-recovery if Windows Live Writer 4 did not shut down properly or crashed. The next time I started up WLW, I saw the message from the screenshot above, clicking on the "Recover changes now (recommended)" link magically recovered all the posts again, saving me a lot of time and hassles.

This feature is not available in Windows Live Writer 3, however, you can also recover unsaved posts if WLW crashed unexpectedly by browsing through the temp folder. WLW 3 creates a temp folder at the location, where "User" is your PC username:

C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\WindowsLiveWriter1286139640\

When you browse to this folder you will see several folders in that, just view details and sort through date to look through them, the temporary post should be stored inside a file called "index.htm". You can open or view the files in this folder to find the post you could not save due to the crash. There is a 99.5% recovery rate through this folder.

However, if you want to get the benefit of Auto-recovery, go ahead and download Windows Live Essentials which also includes Windows Live Writer 4, and someone please tell Microsoft that they should not have removed a life-saver feature like Auto-save.

Watch Hulu Videos Outside US Without Proxy Server

There have been several ways to watch and access Hulu videos outside US in the past, however, Hulu has been blocking those tools and most of them no longer work. However, now a Reddit user has come up with a way to watch Hulu videos outside US without having to use a proxy server or VPN.

hulu_logo

However, accessing Hulu Videos outside US is not pretty straightforward and will require you to perform several tasks. You will also have to use the Firefox browser and install a .

Access Hulu Videos Outside US for Free

Step 1: Download Firefox (if you don’t have it already) and install the Modify Headers add-on (download here)

Step 2: In Firefox, go to Tools -> Modify Headers and from the drop down box select add and enter “X-Forwarded-For” in the first input box and enter the IP address of any US website and click enter.

Step 3: You will need to block TCP and UDP port 1935 since Hulu Flash client tries to connect to that port. Once you have blocked that port it will fall back to Http. To block TCP and UDP ports on Windows, visit this page.

To UDP and TCP port on a Mac, type this in a terminal window:

sudo ipfw add 0 deny tcp from any to any 1935
sudo ipfw add 0 deny udp from any to any 1935

Linux users will have to do this through the iptables by running the following commands:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 1935 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 1935 -j DROP

That’s it, this trick should allow you to watch Hulu videos outside the US at-least for a while till Hulu comes up with a fix for it. Using this trick might block Flash on other websites, so use it only when you want to watch Hulu videos.

Disable/Enable Crash Protection In Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6

Mozilla has introduced a new feature called "Crash Protection" in Firefox 3.6 and . Crash Protection runs using Out-of-process-plugins, which basically runs the plugins as separate processes from the main Firefox process. This allows Mozilla to recover from plugin crashes without freezing the entire browser.

However, not many users like this new feature and one of commentators recently asked whether it was possible to disable crash protection because it froze the browser. Well the answer is that, yes you can disable crash protection in Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6, however, you will have to do so manually.

How To Disable Crash protection in Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6

Step 1: In the browser location bar type "about:config" without the quotes and hit enter or return key.

Step 2: If you are doing this for the first time, you will see a warning saying "You may void your warranty!", you need to press the button "I’ll be careful, I promise" to move to the configuration for Firefox.

Step 3: Once you have clicked the button you will see a lot of strings out there which might not make any sense. Don’t worry about it. In the "Filter" textbox type "plugins" without the quotes and hit enter. The process is slightly different for Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4, follow the appropriate steps given below.

toggle_crash_protection

Once you perform the search, right click on the dom.ipc.plugins.enabled string and click "Toggle", you only have to do this if the value for the string is true, if it is false, the Crash Protection is already disabled.

With Firefox 3.6 you will also need to disable Crash protection for Individual items. If you want to disable Crash protection for Individual items, you can use the following mapping and toggle the respective values to false.

  • dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll (Microsoft Silverlight)
  • dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll (Apple QuickTime)
  • dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll (Adobe Flash)
  • dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.nptest.dll (NPAPI test plugin)

That’s about it, using the above steps you can disable or enable Crash protection in Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4. Firefox 4 does not have options to individually turn the plugins Crash Protection off yet, but it may be added in the final version.

How to Install and Use Add-ons in Firefox 4 Beta 1?

Firefox 4 beta 1 has arrived and the beta 2 is also available for download unofficially from the FTP server. It has some awesome new features like tabs on top, a unified menu and many behind the scene changes. However, there is a word of caution before you jump into using it. The latest Firefox beta has add-on support disabled by default.

firefox-4-addon

This move ensures that users are not facing trouble because of unsupported add-ons. However, that can be an issue at times and here is an easy workaround to install add-ons.

To install older add-ons,

  • First, you need to install an add-on named “Add-on compatibility reporter”.
  • Then, restart Firefox as prompted. This will enable the add-on.
  • Next, you need to restart Firefox once more. Finally, this allows you to install add-ons.
  • In the browser address bar type in “about:addons” to get the Add-on Manager.

Now you can install any older add-on as you could earlier.

The add-on compatibility reporter is used to report add-on compatibility. So, if you are using the Compatibility Reporter add-on to enable older add-ons, please report their compatibility. This will help Mozilla improve your user experience in return.

Fix 0x80070643 Error For Microsoft Security Essentials Install or Update

Microsoft Security Essentials is no doubt one of the best Free Antivirus and Anti-Malware solution available today, and just like Microsoft has done a pretty good job with it.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Quite recently I saw a notification to update to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials, however, the update kept failing because of a "0x80070643" Error. This issue kept happening multiple times and I did find a solution for it. So how do you fix the 0x80070643 Error that occurs while installing or updating Microsoft Security Essentials? Read ahead.

There are various reasons why this error may occur, it could vary based on whether you are installing or updating MSE, I will categorize the problems and their solutions.

Microsoft Security Essentials 0x80070643 Install/Upgrade Errors

Cause 1: You might have another Antivirus programs installed while you are installing MSE.

Solution 1:  Uninstall all the other Antivirus programs before installing MSE and try again, this should resolve the 0x80070643 error.

Cause 2: You might be not be using an older version of Windows Installer

Solution 2: Upgrade windows or download the latest version of Windows Installer. MSE requires at-least version 3.1 of Windows Installer or higher.

Cause 3: Windows Installer service is turned off.

Solution 3: Go to Start -> Run and type in "services.msc", scroll down till you find the Windows Installer service and start it. You might want to change the startup type to automatic. If you aren’t sure how to deal with services, you might want to read up a similar post on starting a Windows service and turning it on automatically.

There may be several other causes why this happens. I will try and update this post once I get to more scenarios and add solutions to it.

How To Fix Adobe Error Code 148:3 Licensing Issue

If you use licensed Adobe products, you might come across an error where starting the product will show you a dialog box saying “Licensing for this product has stopped working” and in the message you will see the Error Code 148:3.

Adobe Licensing Stopped 148:3 Error

Adobe suggests that you restart your computer to fix this issue, however, numerous restarts lead to no solution. Now this might be a really annoying issue if you do not know what to do. However, the solution for this is pretty simple. In my case, I had disabled certain services on Windows which were essential to the Adobe Licensing system.

In the steps below, I will show you how to get rid of this error and also provide additional resources that might come in handy to you if this solution does now work.

How To Fix Adobe Error Code 148:3

The root cause of this problem is that the FLEXnet Licensing Service has been disabled, enabling this service should get rid of the Error Code 148:3. Here is how you can enable the FLEXnet Licensing Service on Windows XP, or .

If you are looking for a software to manage services in Windows you can try out the Services Editor or Service Manager Plus.

Step 1: Press Start > Run and type in services.mscwithout the quotes and hit the Enter key. You can also use the Windows Key + R hotkey to launch the run box.

Step 2: In the services window, find the service “FLEXnet Licensing Service”. If the Startup Type is set to Manual, you just have to start the service and try opening the Adobe application again, you don’t need to follow the rest of the steps. However, you might want to change the Startup Type to “Automatic” so that you don’t have to do this every time. You can follow the rest of the steps if you want to change it to automatically start with Windows.

If the service Startup Type is “Disabled” you will have to enable it, to do that double-click on the service name to open the properties box.

FLEXnet Licensing Service

Step 3: In the available Startup Type dropdown options select “Automatic” and click on the “Apply” button.

Step 4: Once the changes have been Applied, click on the “Start” button to start the service.

Once you are done, click on Ok and close the services manager. Try restarting the Adobe application and the licensing problem should no longer be an issue. If this trick does not work for you, you can read more options at the Adobe Knowledge Base here.

How to Hide Desktop Icons (Win XP)

desktop-cc-icon Some people drop shortcuts and files all over their Windows Desktop. The result will be something between rigid organization and total chaos. There are a few people who can’t stand to see anything on their Desktop except the nice wallpapers they put there. Here are a few tips for these neat freaks.

A. Right Click Method
— If you’ve been around Windows awhile, you probably already know this method. Right click anywhere on an empty area of your Desktop, and choose “Arrange Icons By“, then select “Show Desktop Icons“. Use this method to show or hide icons any time you wish. Just be aware that it takes Windows a seemingly long, 5 or 6 seconds to actually react to this choice. Why does it take so long? Ask Bill Gates.

B. Registry Hack

— If you plan to make changes to the registry, be sure to create a backup before making changes. You can use the ERUNT tool to back it up, create a System Restore point, or you can read my post on how to use Regedit.

This hack will hide all the desktop icons until you remove it. Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\ policies\ Explorer

Then add a new DWORD named NoDesktopwith a value of 1.

Here’s the registry merge script in case you want to create a .REG file.

——

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
“NoDesktop”=dword:00000001

——

If you don’t understand something in this section, I’ll remind you to read my post telling you how to use Regedit. Don’t mess with the Windows Registry unless you have a basic knowledge of how it all works.

C. Freeware app Desktop Control Center

— Ok, I’ll confess, I am one of those neat freaksat times and my Desktop has way too many icons on it. My favorite method for hiding them is a little utility created by Robert Hess, a Microsoft Software Designer.

Desktop Control Center (DCC) is one of those hard to findutilities, written way back in the early 1990’s. It’s tiny, at 19k, and it’s a stand-alone, single executable file.

I usually set a link to it in my Quick Launch as shown below. The second, green icon is Desktop Control Center.

desktop-cc-quick-launch

Once launched, it’ll give you the option to hide all the icons, when you chose Hide the Desktop Window.

desktop-cc-app

You can close the DCC app as soon as you’ve made a choice. It doesn’t need to continue running. The reason I always place it next to the blue Show Desktopshortcut, is that when you hit Show Desktop, all your application Windows will minimize just an you’d expect, however, all your hidden icons will temporarily show on the desktop for you as well. Now that’s a neat trick.

Oh, in case you want it, here’s the green desktop icon I made for the Quick Launch shortcut. I created it with IcoFX.

The original icon for DCC is not very nice looking.

Download Desktop Control Center

By the way, I have to give DCC a thumbs up. It’s a great little app.
