How to Take Ownership of Files and Folders in Windows Vista and 7

File permissions are a much needed addition to Windows, but occasionally it can get on your nerves. There may be times when you will need to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows. Sure, you can modify permissions through the file properties dialogue box. However, there are a couple of much simpler alternatives.

The first alternative is to use the registry files provided by Vishal Gupta from AskVG. Just double click on the Add Take Ownership Option.reg to apply the required changes to your registry. This modifies the discretionary access control lists and grants you permission to do whatever you wish with the file/folder. After this you should be able to take ownership of any file/folder through the right click context menu. Undoing the changes is as simple as running the Remove Take Ownership Option.reg file.

Take-Ownership-File-Permissions

The second option is to use the Rizone Take Ownership Shell Extension. This is a portable utility which essentially does the same thing. You can create and delete the context menu entry with a single click. The utility doesn’t itself require any installation and is a tiny download.
Both of these are good options. Chose the one you feel comfortable with.

How To Run Multiple Instances Of Dropbox

At Techie Buzz here, we are all great fans of the Dropbox application. It’s like a super-synching application on steroids (I don’t care if that’s greatly exaggerated =D) It works on PC, Mac and Linux and even on the iPhone. It not only syncs files, but also does a lot of other nifty helpful stuff.

greenshot_2009-12-30_04-35-26 With Dropbox, you can create collaborative folders that can be synced between multiple user’s computers and kept up-to-date in real time. Although, you can create any number of folders and do as many collaborations, it is not currently possible to run multiple instances of the Dropbox application and in turn simultaneously run multiple Dropbox accounts on the same computer. For some reason, someone might like to create different accounts for different purposes. For example, if a folder that syncs between friends has maxed out the entire account limits, the user could make another account just for business.

If you find yourself in such circumstance, treat your computer to Dropboxen. Dropboxen is a Dropbox addon that lets you run multiple instances of the application at the same time. Each running instance can then sync with different accounts.

The catch here is that, for any new instance you wish to run, you’ll need to make a different Windows User Account for it. When you run a new instance of the application, the Dropbox folder for that instance will be created in that User Account’s My Documents directory. Adding to that, you’ll also need to make some simple editing in an xml file provided.

To install the Dropboxen addon, follow the instruction here. It requires .Net Framework 3.5 and unlike Dropbox, it ain’t multiplatform.

How to Replace Windows XP Search

Windows XP isn’t going to suddenly go away now that Windows 7 is out. I recently received a new HP Mini netbook as an early Christmas present. Guess what operating system is on it? Yeah, it’s XP, and I’m not disappointed. I still use XP at work and that may not change for a long time yet, considering how the economy is doing.

Now on to the topic …

ms_doggie_search How do you like seeing the little doggie when you use Windows XP search (from the Start Menu) to look for files? It’s a slow search, very slow, and the doggie doesn’t help much. That little doggie has been around since 1995. He first made an appearance in an operating system called MS Bob. No, the name isn’t a joke, and I’ve got a copy of that OS.

How would you like to replace Windows XP Search with something a whole heck of a lot faster?

You can add a faster file search engine to Windows by using a freeware utility named  Reroute XP Search.

defaultSearch It only replaces the search dialog that you see when you hit the Search link in your Start Menu or hold down the Windows Key and tap the Fkey. This does not change what happens when you are in Windows Explorer and you hit F3 or click on search there. So it does do what it advertises, but it would be so much better if it did change all the places you can call up Windows search.

Download a file named reroutexpsearch.zip from the site, then extract it and run the executable file, RerouteXPSearch.exe. You’ll see a fairly obvious interface to add a replacement 3rd party search tool.

reroutexpsearch

So, what fast search tools do I recommend? Here are three I’ve reviewed in my wiki. I’ve tried them all and like them very much.

SnowBird, AgentRansack, EveryThing

Now when I want to search for a file, I hold down the Windows Key then tap “F, and I’ll be able to find a file far faster than Windows alone can find it.

Download Reroute XP Search

Techie Buzz Verdict:

This little quick and dirty app can prove to be valuable when you need to find files fast. It’s small, stand-alone, and it does exactly what it says it will do.

Here is a step by step tutorial on how you can embed videos, images and polls in WordPress using URLs, rather than having to copy and paste the full embed codes, this will ensure that users who do not have support for unfiltered HTML will be able to insert videos into WordPress posts.

If you view the source of the page, you will see that the URL has been converted into an actual embed code using oEmbed technology. Super cool right :-). You can also insert images and polls using the same method.

Export Facebook Phonebook as CSV File

If you are a user, many of your friends might have phone numbers which they share with you. If you have a large number of friends, copying and pasting them to your external contact list can be quite a pain.

Export Facebook Phonebook is a handy script which will allow you to export all the phone numbers and few other additional details like Name, City, etc from your Facebook account as a CSV file.

The script does not work out of the box as it is for two reasons. First is because Facebook does not use outright URL’s, and instead appends the navigation to the current URL. So in order for this to work, you will have to directly load the phonebook URL. Also the shortcut key assigned for this script Ctrl + Shift + Dis the browser’s bookmark shortcut, which does not get overridden.

Export your Facebook Phonebook as CSV

Step 1: Install the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox if required, and then install the Export Facebook Phonebook Userscript.

Step 2: Login to Facebook and click on this URL to open the Facebook Phonebook page.

export_facebook_phonebook

Step 3: Go to the Greasemonkey menu and select Export Facebook Phonebookfrom the User Script Commands sub-menu. Clicking on this should update the current page in rapid succession, however, that is the script scraping the phonebook from Facebook.

Step 4: Once all the Phonebook entries have been imported, you will see an option to download the the contents as a CSV file. The full CSV file contains the following details:

Name,City,State,Phone #,Network / Other Info,Contact Result,Notes / Next Step,Who Calls,Month to call back,Year,Who’s List

Techie Buzz Verdict

We have tested and found that this script works without any problems, however, this might not be valid according to Facebook TOS. The export process is pretty fast and you might consider using this if you have a large number of contacts whose phone numbers you want to export and use externally.

There is a slight problem with the URL which is tracked by the script and the problem that the shortcut which does not work, because of which it will not work out of the box in . However, you can modify the line below to change the dto something else as the shortcut key.

GM_registerMenuCommand("Export Facebook Phonebook", doExport, "d", "control shift","f");

How to Add WinHlp32 Support to Windows 7 and Vista

windows7looogoo The other day while I was playing around with an older program, I clicked on the built-in help feature and I received this message from Microsoft:

The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which depends on a feature that isn’t included in this version of Windows …

winhelp32-help-error

I went to the recommended site at Microsoft, and there they explained the following:

Microsoft stopped including the 32-bit Help file viewer in Windows releases beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Isn’t that just sweet? Arghhhh!

Fortunately, they still offer you the chance to download and install the old help file viewer, which is named WinHlp32.exe.

Even if you haven’t gotten this helpfulmessage yet, you probably will at some time in the future. You can save yourself some time later and install the old help viewer now.

Here is the download for Vista, and here is the download for Windows 7. You’ll have to jump through Microsoft’s Genuine Validation hoop before you can get to the real download. Other than that, it acts like any other Windows Update.

If you need more help installing the old help, let me know with a comment below or email me.
