Unfriend Finder for Facebook is a script which tracks your Facebook friends and then notifies you whenever someone decides to unfriend you on Facebook.

Facebook Unfriend Menu Notification

The script tightly integrates within Facebook and sends you notifications whenever someone removes you from your list. It also alerts you when someone ignores your friend request.

The only problem of the script is that it is browser specific and only works on , , Safari and right now. There is no support for Internet Explorer yet, but you can read up some tips on running Greasemonkey scripts in IE.

Podcasting for Beginners: Recording, Mixing, Software and Tips

PodcastingNot a very long time ago, people would sit together in their rooms, stare at their television sets and wait for their favorite programs to start. They would often put on hold other chores, rush through the traffic or hastily put their kids to sleep so as to catch their favorite television show in time.

What you read above may be said for years gone by, and for some, may stand true today itself. But the truth is, not many people now have the time to wait for the shows they want to watch or listen to. Some people have completely abandoned watching TV and usually resort to downloading their entertainment dose through the internet and enjoying them at a time of their choice.

Now if the new media consumers are getting ready, how can the producers be left unprepared?

Ever since Apple added support for podcasts in iTunes, in about 2005, their popularity has soared unceasingly. When RSS aka news feeds had popularized, they were thought of as a quick and intuitive way to read articles and follow up news updates and several other texts in a short span of time. Instead of going to the news, people now had news coming to them. After text, media followed. With the advent of the media-in-newsfeeds idea, podcasts took birth. Now instead of going to their shows, people could now get, and watch them whenever they wanted. Several podcast popularized, iTunes had a platform where everyone wanted to be.

That’s probably enough of history you would want to know about this thing called podcasts. For more, see Wikipedia.

What is a podcast?

A podcast is a combination of a media file audio or video combined with a RSS newsfeed. The name itself is a compound of the words broadcast’ and iPod’, even though Apple didn’t invent the term. Think of it this way. If you subscribe to a podcast, whenever the person who publishes it wants to broadcast a media file audio or video you will get hold of the file as soon as he publishes it. Now that you have the broadcast file in your possession, you can access it whenever you want. This is just a non-geeky explanation, feel like digging more? Go here. Now, that media file you just downloaded, could be a comedy show, a drama, a DJ music show, a talk show, an interview, a science piece, or anything on politics, movies or technology. It’s just radio. But better.

How is it different from other forms of media?

They’re live. This is not. You can miss TV or radio shows if you don’t listen or watch them when they air, you can’t do that with podcasts. You can listen or watch them anytime!

How to create your own podcast?

Now think of it. Creating your own podcast can be both easy and difficult. Easy if you think of yourself as a common Joe who wants to get his word out. It’s just about speaking and recording right? Or think of yourself as a competition to the real media guys, the TV. Then you’d have to push some skills up your sleeve. Podcasting can be done in two ways: Audio or video. Most things discussed in this guide are for the audio podcast producer, however, many may apply to the video producer too.

This guide will be divided in two parts. Beginner and Skilled. Take the Beginner option if you just want a podcast out there, or choose Skilled if you’re willing to put some extra time to go the extra mile. Also, there are some things common, that you will have to take care of no matter what route you take.

Automatically Turn Off the Touchpad When Using a Mouse

[for Windows and Mac OS X]

Do you use a laptop or netbook? How many times have you accidently hit your touchpad while typing? When it happens, you end up typing somewhere else or not at all. It’s aggravating, but it’s not something you need to put up with if you listen to our advice.

Last year, Keith wrote about a free little app that lets you disable the touchpad while typing. That application is called TouchFreeze (Windows Only), and it does a good job of keeping your cursor on track. Whenever you start typing, your laptop’s touchpad is automatically disabled.

I recently decided that I’d try TouchFreeze, but first I figured it would be a good idea to investigate my options. The first place I looked was in the mouse pointer options. Any Windows user can normally access the mouse settings by going to the Control Panel and double-clicking on the Mouse icon. Below you can see those Mouse icons as they appear in WinXP and Win7.

Mac users with a Trackpad can access their settings by clicking System Preferences, selecting  Keyboard & Mouse, then switching  to the  Trackpad category.

I’m guessing that 99% of the time I use my laptop, I already have a mouse attached to it. I’ll admit that I’m still hooked on using a mouse. I’ve never gotten comfortable using a touchpad all the time.

I found out that my touchpad is a Synaptics device. Apparently, Synaptics touchpads are used on many major brands of computers, such as Dell, Samsung, Acer, HP, and Toshiba. The surprise for me, was that Synaptics already has a good solution for keeping my touchpad disabled when I don’t need it.

You can find the settings for your Synaptics touchpad in the Mouse settings on the last tab. The Synaptics settings include the option to turn off the touchpad whenever a mouse or other pointing device is attached.

This setting is labeled Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.

You may also be able to access the Synaptics settings by double-clicking on the Synaptics icon in your system tray. The Synaptics icon may look like one of these two icons below.

For the Mac users with a Trackpad, the same setting exists. Here you can see it at the very bottom of this image (from It says “Ignore trackpad when mouse is present”.

That’s my solution to the problem. I like it because I don’t have to load any additional software on my laptop. TouchFreeze is great, but I don’t need it most of the time.

Fix Syslinux No Default or UI Configuration Error While Booting from USB

Quite recently my laptop’s backlight stopped working and I had to start using an older laptop whose HDD no longer works. I created a Live CD USB drive using Pendrive Linux’s utility for Linux Mint.

However, while booting with the pendrive I got an error saying:

SYSLINUX 3.85 2010-02-20 CBIOS Copyright (c) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!

This error kept happening no matter what I did. I tried to use another USB drive to create a new bootable drive, used different flavors of Linux but had the same problem. I searched around several forums but the solution for it wasn’t easy.

However, I did find the solution and wanted to post it here so that other users who face this problem can find it easily. In order to fix this problem, you will have to plugin the USB drive into another computer and then rename the “isolinux” folder to “syslinux”. In addition to that also rename the “isolinux.bin” and “isolinux.cfg” files in the same folder to “syslinux.bin” and “syslinux.cfg” respectively and try booting with the USB drive again.

If the above solution does not fix your problem, you can try formatting your drive as FAT instead of FAT32. And by the way, I would be getting a Dell XPS Studio 1645 soon, so you can expect a review of the monster laptop soon :-)
