By on February 12th, 2009

By default has Windows Media Player 12 as the default media player, if you are not happy with the performance of the Media player, you can easily downgrade the Windows Media Player 12 to WMP 11.

Though the method is not straightforward and you will need to perform a hack uninstall of WMP 12. There are several steps you will need to follow to do this.

Step 1: Download Windows Media Player 11 Installer for Windows 7 (Update: January 31, 2012 – Link updated)

Step 2: Type services.msc in Windows 7 search bar and open the services application.

Step 3: Find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service and Stop it.

Step 4: You will need to take Ownership of several files which include:

    1. All files in Program Files\Windows Media Player\ folder
    2. All files starting with wmp in System32 folder
    3. wmploc.dll.mui in Sytem32\en-us\ folder

Step 5: Run the Windows Media Player 11 Installer you had downloaded earlier.

Step 6: Type Regedit in Windows 7 search bar and open the registry editor application.

Step 7: Delete following Registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions

Step 8: Reboot your Windows 7 for the changes to take effect.

That’s it, with these steps you will be able to downgrade WMP 12 and use WMP 11 instead. Want to share any Windows 7 tips? Feel free to contact us with your tips.

This is easy – WMP12 in Windows 7 Home Premium does not work at all – actually, nothing and I repeat absolutely nothing works at all in Windows 7 Media Player 12 – Aspect and sound are horrible and further more my suggestion to all and sundry is to JUMP SHP AND MOVE IMMEDIATELY OVER TO APPLE/MAC IMMEDIATELY – that system actually does work unlike MS Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12 – what a lemon this whole windows really is – it just goes to show how the so-called programmers at Microsoft respond to any type of criticisms – nothing doing, yeah, that's right keep it up!!

At step 5, when I run the installer, I get an error stating that a newer version of WMP is installed and WMP11 can’t be installed. How do I resolve this so that I can downgrade completely?

  • Keris

  • Dovepistil

Yes! Thanks! WMP just did a completely unpermitted “update” on my Win7 64 bit system and took over all media file associations! I will not allow abusive crap like that from the dorks in Redmond on my computer! The Sept.6 post by Val works perfectly, even on my 64 bit system. Thanks for your valuable help, Val!

this doesn’t mess with the Media Center does it???

i would like to know if i can remove media player completely as its useless i dont want to downgrade to mp11.
    can you help

These instructions are junk. Don’t ruin your WMP. I hate v.12 as well, yet better having it than destroying it. To fix your WMP, turn off windows media player & media center in “turn windows features on or off”, restart, turn them on again, restart, download this freeware from second mirror location: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/Fix-WMP-Utility.shtml, then run it, & you get your WMP 12 back!

All I can say is this, WMP 12 is complete and utter GARBAGE. Never have I been so stressed about a computer issue. I have tried countless methods from websites. None have worked for me. And of course I cant DL WMP 11 because I have Win 7 with a 64 bit OS. As soon as I can afford it im going to buy a Macbook. Microsoft has had well enough time to remedy this situation. And I know they know about it. Do a quick google search of “WMP 12 Problems”. Yet still, no REAL solution is provided.
PEOPLE, DO NOT BUY WIN 7.

Steve Ballmer, SHOVE IT. IM DONE WITH YOUR BOGUS, OUTDATED, MACHINES.

    WORST MICROSOFT PRODUCT/UPDATE EVER.

  • james

Doesn’t work. When installing WMP11 it can’t overwrite the WMP .dll’s in system32 folder.

  • Bennet

Sounds like a downgrade to me. You should check Dictionary.com for “uninstall”

  • Gary

You failed to mention it will not work on 64 bit machine. welcome to XP mode virtual.

  • Patrick

lol so I read this and at first glance it all looks good BUT before I even think of starting step one I scroll down and read the comments… didnt take very long to come across the posts where people have said it doesnt work on 64bit… no worries Ill go another route, but I continue to read posts that are posted up to six months later and people are still crying that it wont work for them or that gee they wish they would have known it doesnt work for 64bit… Are you serious?! Read user comments and learn from others NOT ONLY the posted thread you losers!

  • Scott Iredale

Probably the most misleading title ever. Change your title, honestly. You do not teach to uninstall, you teach a downgrade. This is fucking retarded. I was looking to get rid of the thing, and just like rick-rolls and spam videos on youtube, I can find the same horseshit everywhere on the net. Change your fucking title seriously.

Since I don’t use WMP at all yet constantly get errors telling me that it has ‘stopped working’ I’d like to uninstall it completely and not have any version on my system.
