It wasn’t long ago that we only saw touch screen devices in Sci-Fi movies. However, technology has undoubtedly leaped forward, and Acer has revealed the ICONIA, their new concept to enhance the tablet experience. It includes the versatility of a regular 14form factor with a unique dual touch screen layout and an amazingly intuitive all-point multi-touch functionality. This means that you can use all your fingers to navigate the system. If you are looking for a unique and different way of approaching personal computing, then this is the device for you.
Anything you want, whether it be Multimedia, entertainment, communication, web browsing or general office work, users are able to set up a favorable scenario over the two screens. To improve the readability of websites or documents, the material can be spread over both screens, or can set to show one task on one screen and a completely different task on the other. This makes multi tasking much easier.
Jim Wong, Acer Inc. Vice President and ITGO President, stated:
We took this insight and created a range of easy to use devices with touch technology including Smartphone’s, Notebooks, AIO PCs, Tablet and our latest addition, the ICONIA Touchbook: this level of commitment to touch technology is something no other PC vendor can compete with, the Intel ® Coreâ„¢ i5 processor together with our experience with touch technology has allowed us to completely remap the user experience to create a far more natural interaction with our devices. Both of the fantastic 14displays boast Acer’s CineCrystal 1366×768 resolution high-brightness LED-Backlit LCD HD screens and take huge advantage of cutting edge technology supporting an all-point multi-touch interface for precise on-screen inputs. The screens are protected by ultra-thin and durable Gorilla Glass which is both scratch and fingerprint resistant.
Acer has stuffed Iconia with a wide range of features and applications which are able to fully exploit the endless opportunities in multi-touch tech. So where does all this start? It starts with the Acer Ring’.
The Acer Ring appears by simply putting all 5 fingers on the screen and making a grab gesture, once in place, the Acer Ring allows users to start touch applications, use the virtual keyboard, open the gesture editor, Window manager, and the Device Console.
The Virtual Keyboard can also be launched by placing both palms on the bottom of the lower display, the intelligent design senses the user’s hand positions and launches the application. It shows a full sized QWERTY keyboard with international language support to give users the same experience as a traditional keyboard, including predictive text. The Keyboard also features a touchpad and numeric keys, such as you would find on a standard laptop. It can easily be toggled between Keyboard and handwriting mode.
Users can customize gestures to open specific applications, open websites, view the desktop or lock the computer. The Gesture Editor offers a simple and easy to use way of personalizing the ICONIA to best suit your needs.
The Window Manager allows users to organize the various application windows on the double screen. The windows can be moved effortlessly between the 2 screens so that you always have what you need at hand. You can also browse through open applications, re-size, dock or close windows.
There are various applications built in, such as:
SocialJogger lets you gather and check updates from Facebook, YouTube and Flickr in all in the same place, taking advantage of the dual screens to check posts and updates on the bottom display and use the second display for exploring and viewing more content.
MyJournal can be used to collect web clippings on your preferred topics. Web clippings are dynamically updated to display all the latest information and can be categorized and displayed according to your needs. Simply tab on a collected Web Clip to display the full webpage on the top screen for a complete access.
The Scrapbook lets you easily store clippings, posts and just about anything else from different sources in the same place. You can capture screen shots from the web or an application, edit them and add notes. You can create photo collections with notes and comments. You can also add your scraps to presentations, and documents. Scrapbook helps you keep track of anything you find interesting, funny or valuable and share it!
In addition, Acer’s usual touchscreen applications are available, such as TouchBrowser, TouchPhoto, TouchMusic and TouchVideo, allowing on-screen gestures to zoom, rotate, flip and scroll and to access and enjoy your multimedia from an integrated touch-optimized interface.
ICONIA offers an entirely new computing and touch experience. Are you ready?
