AMD has been struggling to get the performance crown back from Intel, right from the time Intel launched the Conroe architecture based processors. Its been more than 3 years since the launch of Intel Conroe based processors and AMD is still trying to catch up with their performance. Their Phenom series of Processor proved to be a disaster for them, but thankfully the company got its act together and released the Phenom II which nearly matched the performance of Intel Core 2 Duo Processors. But by the time AMD launched Phenom II processors, Intel had come up with Core i7 series of processors which in the truest sense pwned AMD processors including Phenom II. AMD knew that it is not competitive enough in terms of performance with its Intel counterparts so it started competiting against Intel by reducing the prices of their processors and making them extremely value-for-money.
Thanks to all this heavy competition, AMD today released 2 new AMD Athlon II X4 based Quad Core Processors and one of them costs less than 100$. The Athlon II X4 620 and Athlon II X4 630 run at 2.6 and 2.8GHz respectively and comes with 2MB of L2 cache and does not feature L3 cache and carry a thermal envelope of 95W.The Athlon II X4 620 costs 99$ while the Athlon II X4 costs 122$. The Athlon II X4 620 and 630 are not going to provide stellar performance but they will surely shine when Applications which use quad cores efficiently will run on them.
