Why Do Webmail’s & Desktop Email Clients Hide Images By Default?

One of our readers asked a interesting question today, the reader basically asked us that he signs up for a lot of newsletters, however whenever he opens up them in Gmail, the images are hidden and he has to click on a link to show the images.

This is not uncommon and can also be seen when using desktop email clients like Microsoft Outlook and Windows Live Mail.

The reason for webmail providers and desktop applications blocking the images is because when you load a image, it can be used to send back personal information about you to the email sender.

For example a image can send back your IP address, type of operating system used and so on when it is loaded.

This is one of the main reason images are not loaded automatically in email messages, however you can still view images by clicking on the link which says Show Images or Display Images below.

Remember do not load images if the email has come from an non trusted source as they can create a problem for you.

Watch Michael Jackson’s Memorial Service Live Online

The King of Pop Michael Jackson is on his way to higher grounds, and all his fans would want to have a glimpse of the king before he buried and rests in peace forever.

The Michael Jackson Public Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles, California and simulcast inside to Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE across the street.

However not everyone will be able to view the memorial service in person, and if you are not near a Television screen, you can view those videos live online.

We will update this post before the memorial starts with links on where you can watch the Michael Jackson’s memorial live online.

Nobody Wants to Send You Secret Songs of Michael Jackson – Oh Wait! That’s Malware!

You know, the bad guys are always behind exploiting the scoop to their best abilities. Michael Jackson died (RIP) and everyone thronged the internet to confirm the news and find further leads. But it didn’t take the spammers long to capitalize on the massive interest in Michael Jackson.

Security researchers have warned people, about the increasing amount of spam and malware relating to Michael Jackson floating around the web.

Earthtimes reported on Thursay:

One e-mail carries the subject line “Remembering Michael Jackson” was circulating with a worm in tow. The e-mail has a zip file attached that infects victims if downloaded.

“The e-mail, which claims to come from sarah@michaeljackson.com, says that the attached ZIP file contains secret songs and photos of Michael Jackson,” Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, wrote on a blog. “However, the reality is that opening the attachment exposes you to infection - and if your computer is hit you will be spreading the worm onto other internet users.”

Cluley said that the malware also spreads via USB memory sticks. Another e-mail promises an exclusive look at a YouTube video of the “last work of Michael Jackson,” but instead installs a malicious program that steals passwords.

Several sites went down when MJ died. Make sure your computer doesn’t.

Yahoo Messenger 10 Review & Download

Yahoo Messenger recently retired the Vista version of the IM client, however you can still download YM Vista, that aside Yahoo is working on Yahoo Messenger 10, a newer client with better multilingual support and more features.

A pre-alpha version of Yahoo Messenger 10 is doing the rounds of the internet, and we got our hands on it to check it out.

The first change you will notice is the addition of a choice to select the language before you sign into YM.

After logging in you will notice a change from the earlier interface of YM 9, and options to view the updates broadcasted by your friends.

You will see a small notification in the bottom of the screen whenever a contact broadcasts updates to their profiles.

You can also see all the updates by clicking on the Y! Updates button in the main messenger window.

Managing and sorting contacts has also been made easier in YM10, you can sort contacts by name, availability or activity.

YM10 also adds some new options in the preferences, for language, voice and video devices and to manage update, however voice and video chat seems to be disabled right now.

In addition to that there are easy links to manage you pingbox and the updates that you broadcast to your profile.

YM 10 does not have that many features right now, but we definitely would see a lot more features in future releases. The file has been tested for spywares, malwares and viruses and is completely clean. Thanks Sandip.

bbPress, the forum software developed by Automattic has hit the streets with a final 1.0 version. Automattic is better known as the company behind Wordpress, and bbPress has been rather living under a rock for the past few months. However, it has got its time now, so you can try the final release now.

bbPress is basically a very minimalistic, simple and fast forum software, although with some good community support lately, it has been able to build a number of features and plugins. One of the major advantages that bbPress has over other forum softwares is that it integrates very well with Wordpress. Bloggers using Wordpress will feel at home when incorporating a forum onto their site. Moreover, users will need a single account to access both the Wordpress and bbPress installation.

Checkout the new features and improvements that the final release brings:

“Voices” count on topics reports the number of individuals participating in a conversation
Native support for cookie integration (single sign-on) with Wordpress 2.7 and 2.8
Optional support for memcached object caching
Time-zone and Daylight Savings time support
A complete XML-RPC publishing API
Pingback support – each topic can receive pingbacks, just like a blog post

If you are upgrading from any earlier release to 1.0 then you absolutely should backup all you files and database before doing so. You also may need to make minor adjustments to your templates. Before upgrading, disable all plugins.

Remove Extra White Space Margin From Google Search Results

Quite recently Google rolled out some changes to their search results page, however one of the change is quite annoying.

It adds some extra white space to the left hand side margin of the results page as you can see in the screenshot below.

If you do not like the extra space in the margin, you can get rid of it by using a Greasemonkey script, that will work on Firefox with Greasemonkey installed.

In addition to removing the extra white space in the margins, it will also change the new Google logo and use the older one.

Feedburner Allowing Publishers To Change Email Subject

Sometime back Darren from Problogger.net wrote a post which was a open request to Feedburner to allow users to customize the subject of the email that got sent out.

Looks like Google Feedburner has their eyes in the right place, as they have quietly rolled out a new feature which will allow users to set the post title as the subject when sending out email to subscribers.

Feedburner now allows use of dynamic parameters to be set in the subject line, you will need to go to Publicize –> Email Subscriptions –> Email Branding to make the changes.

You can use ${latestItemTitle} to insert your latest post’s title into the Subject/Title of email, with two or more items in the update, ${n} shows the total number of items, and ${m} shows the number of items beyond the latest.

Examples

Techie buzz: “${latestItemTitle}” plus ${m} more
Techie buzz (in this message: ${n} new items)

So if you have been waiting for this, go ahead and customize the email subject right away.

Bing Adds Twitter Tweets To Search Results, Gets More Real-Time Search

Microsoft has been getting a lot of things right with their decision engine Bing, the latest being the introduction of showing twitter tweets in search results.

This would introduce real-time search into Bing, Google has been after twitter for quite sometime now to integrate real-time search, however surprising Bing has beaten them to it.

Starting later today, when you search for these folks names in association with Twitter, you’ll see their latest Tweets come up in real time on Bing’s search results. For example, if you type “Kara Swisher Twitter” or “Kara Swisher Tweets” or even “@karaswisher” as your search query, you’ll see something like the below.

However there is a small problem here, you cannot call this a real time-search yet, since you are specifically searching for a name with a keyword that is related to twitter, users can also perform the same searches using Twitter search.

It would be interesting to see how Bing takes this integration and adds it to other search terms which are not related to twitter but to maybe say a ongoing topic, for which you will definitely find lots of conversations on twitter.

This should definitely send a alarm to the folks back at Google, who have been trying hard to get a deal with twitter and roll out real-time results as a part of search queries.

However Google is definitely not going to sit tightly on this, so expect some announcements from the in the near future.

The new feature will be gradually rolled out to users in next few hours, so if you don’t see twitter results when you search Bing, give it another try after sometime.
