The default Windows defragmenter is something that we avoid recommending to our readers, and in the past have told you about the best free defragmentation tools for Windows which are definitely worth using.

Just came across another useful free defragmentation tool called UltraDefrag that is pretty good and a much better alternative for  defragmenting your files.

Though we have listed several alternatives earlier, the unique feature of UltraDefrag is that, it can defragment your system files at boot time. UltraDefrag also provides user with a Console application that can be run from the command prompt.

UltraDefrag Features

  • Very fast defragmentation, the work is done via a kernel mode driver which has an optimal defragging algorithm.
  • Very small engine written in pure C. Nice graphical interface – compact and functional.
  • Safety, because the file moving is accomplished with Microsoft’s own Defrag API.
  • Ability to generate html reports of fragmentation status.
  • Ability to include/exclude files based on simple filters.
  • Native x64 support.
  • Free: Distributed with full source code under the GNU General Public License.

If you want really thorough defragmentation then Perfect Disk is the best option. You can actually feel the difference.

No, Perfect Disk is not so good.
I’m using UltraDefrag (and Auslogics Disc Defrag from time to time) after comparing of many defragmentation tools, including Perfect Disk.

Ultradefrag still cannot defrag the MFT/pagefile right? So it’s the same as any ‘free’ defragger and has pretty much the same features as the windows defragger. I see no advantage in these freeware utilities (UD, auslogic etc) because of the total lack of useful features.

I am sticking with my favorite defragger- Diskeeper 2008 Pro. Agreed, it was not free, but it’s way better than any of these free defraggers and actually has lots of useful features. None of the free ones come even close.

I agree with Keith & Eugene, I am also using Ulrte Defrag. Keith thanks for the great work and keep the free tools coming.
