Google Building A Real Operating System

If you have not been in hibernation for the past 4-5 years, you might have been hearing rumors about how Google was secretly building a operating system to rival Microsoft.

In fact Google already built a OS for mobile phones called Android, which has had a pretty successful run so far.

To put all speculations to rest Google has finally made a announcement with regards to a operating system they are developing called OS.

Google Chrome OS as they are going to call their open source operating system is based on the fundamentals of the Google Chrome browser, it will be a lightweight operating system that will be initially targeted at netbooks.

It does make sense for Google to target netbooks since they usually do not have a very high configuration and a lighter OS will definitely boost the productivity.

Google Chrome OS will basically focus on speed, simplicity and security and will be designed to be fast and lightweight. Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market in 2010.

Google Chrome OS will basically focus on bringing ease of use of the web, like many of the Google products have been.

Now the bigger question, is this going to be a direct attack on Microsoft who is now the world leader and dominates the operating system. Well you can say it is a direct attack, but there is still a long way to go before Google can make inroads into Microsoft domination.

We will leave that discussion for another post, right now this is a really big news, Google has really made several people nervous about this announcement and yes this includes both Microsoft and privacy pundits alike who will be watching the release of this OS with hawk eyes.

Hopefully Google should come up with some demos of the OS soon, 2010 is still a long way away and we bet many of us really want to have a go at it much before 2010.

Gmail Leaves Beta, Long Live Gmail Beta

has by far been a product that has been in beta for the longest possible period we have seen, not that the features in Gmail were buggy or anything, the Beta tag lived on and stuck to it.

If you login to your Gmail account, or refresh the page if you already have it open, you will no longer see the beta text under the logo.

This is definitely a huge step forward for one of the best innovations email has ever seen, I have been a early adopter of Gmail, and when it launched more than 5 years back, it looked something different, something we were never used to.

I remember to have learned the concepts of starring emails, archiving them and more from Gmail, the interface and all has all stuck on with me.

So here is wishing Gmail all the best, now that it has shed the beta tag. But wait, we are all used to seeing the beta under the logo, how can you live without it, well the folks at Gmail thought about this, and added a feature which will allow you to view the plain old Gmail Beta logo instead of the newer one.

To enable it go to Settings > Labs and enable the Back to Beta feature to view the old logo.

How long have you been using Gmail for? Will you be happy now that Gmail has finally shed off the beta from the logo? Do let us know through your comments.

How Many Times Have Twitter, Facebook & MySpace Been Mentioned By Blogs/Websites? [Interesting Stats]

So we use social networking quite a lot, and we use to promote our brands and websites, however how many times are the social networking brands themselves mentioned by websites or blogs.

Here is a simple statistics for the number of times , and MySpace has been mentioned in websites or blogs over a certain period of time.

Please note the stats are just for fun, we decided to do this just to see, how many people are mentioning brands they so often use to communicate with people.

Twitter Brand Mention Statistics

In the last hour Twitter was mentioned 4,976 times

In last 12 hours Twitter was mentioned over 1 million times.

In the last 24 hours Twitter was mentioned over 2.2 million times

In the last one week Twitter was mentioned over 22 million times

In the last one month Twitter was mentioned over 70 million times

Facebook Brand Mentions Statistics

In the last hour Facebook was mentioned 5,139 times

In last 12 hours Facebook was mentioned over half a million times.

More Interesting Stats

Taking a look at popular sites that write about technology and social networking, here are some more stats about TechCrunch and Mashable mentioning these social networking brands.

TechCrunch Twitter Mention Stats

  • Mentioned Twitter 1 times in last hour.
  • Mentioned Twitter 4 times in the last 12 hours.
  • Mentioned Twitter 5 times in the last 24 hours.
  • Mentioned Twitter 131 times in the last 7 days.
  • Mentioned Twitter 446 times in the past 1 month.

TechCrunch Facebook Mention Stats

  • Mentioned Facebook 2 times in the last 24 hours.
  • Mentioned Facebook 108 times in the last 7 days.
  • Mentioned Facebook 385 times in the past 1 month.

TechCrunch MySpace Mention Stats

  • Did not mention MySpace in last 24 hours.
  • Mentioned MySpace 10 times in the last 7 days.
  • Mentioned MySpace 171 times in the past 1 month.

Mashable Twitter Mention Stats

  • Mentioned Twitter 5 times in the last 24 hours.
  • Mentioned Twitter 140 times in the last 7 days.

Based on the above stats you will definitely see that MySpace is losing steam when it comes to people mentioning their brand in websites and articles.

Twitter and Facebook however are pretty close and neck to neck, showing that people mention them in a higher percentage of posts that are written these day. We do not have the total number of posts written during this period to compare the %age of posts mentioning either Twitter or Facebook.

However both Twitter & Facebook have been in the news quite a lot for several reasons, which might be why they have so many mentions.

Important Things About The Stats

We did not do this stats to judge the popularity of these social networks among users, these stats are only there to see how many people are writing about them, everything including good publicity and bad publicity is included in the stats, so please do not use them to judge if a particular social networking is good or bad.

We used Google Blog Search to base the mentions, as it is more reliable and up to date and also allowed us to segregate the data according to different mention periods.

Do let us know your opinions about what you think about the stats we put up.

Note: We did not include several other social networking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit etc since they do not fall in the same category as the 3 above, we will do more statistics like these in the future, based on different criteria’s and data.

Using Shared PCs Can Make You Sick

Using shared PCs is known to have security risks, however researchers have published a study which says that using shared PCs can also be a cause of spreading germs and diseases.

Reason? Take a look at the image below.

Though the above image is a bit harsh, even clean looking keyboards used by several people can contain as much as five times the number of microorganisms as those used by just one person.

According to, in tests, almost half of the keyboards harbored the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus which, although usually harmless when it is on the skin, can lead to serious infections if it enters the body.

However there is no real way to get around this problem, other than by thoroughly cleaning the keyboards frequently, however chances are that many people may still visit places such as internet cafes, where the keyboards may have not been cleaned even if they have been used by 100s of people.

The safest bet is to quickly clean your hands with a sanitizer after using a shared PC, also DO NOT EAT anything while using shared PCs, there are chances that you are transferring the germs straight to your stomach.

To be more safe go ahead and buy your own computer, it is really cheap to get one for your home today.

How many of you used shared PCs? Have you ever thought that using a shared PC could turn out to be a health hazard? Let us know through your comments.
