Nokia Finally Figured Out A Touch Smartphone. But..

Quite recently, I had the privilege to visit 2010, their annual phone and developer event, which was sold out. There were a lot of people out there who were curious about Nokia’s latest devices and development initiatives.

Nokia World 2010

When I landed out at the event hotel, few people were speaking about how Nokia was in disarray with resignations from the top few people who have mattered to them for the past few years, including their CEO Anssi.

However, the events that followed were much of a revelation. After the Nokia N97 debacle, I finally saw with my own eyes, that Nokia had finally understood what a touch smartphone should be like. Let me just add here, that Nokia is the market leader in phone manufacturing and they are not just about a smartphone, yet they have always been innovators, even when they have failed to challenge this segment with their devices.

Nokia has worked in many ways to actually fulfill their mantra of "Connecting People" by bringing people together in places where no other manufacturer would go; the rural areas of developing countries. Kudos to them for that, but yet, living around New York, I always wondered whether Nokia would cater my needs, and they most probably have got an hang of how to do it.

Let me tell you that I was almost first in line at the Nokia flagship store in New York when they launched the , and I was very very disappointed with it. However, I was pretty happy when I saw the new Nokia devices launched this time around. Out of the new Nokia offerings, including the , and other similar devices like the and Nokia C7, I wouldn’t buy any, however, from here on I believe that the future Nokia devices will be far more better than their competition.

Going forward, with a new CEO in Stephen Elop, I feel that Nokia with its huge history have a really good chance to get back into the smartphone market, specifically the touch phone market, where they are nothing but bystanders right now, except for maybe .

Nevertheless, Nokia still has a long way to go before it can actually sit on top of the smartphone pile and they do have to take care of a lot of things which are not working in their favor. I have several grouses against Nokia and these are the some of the few that I feel could be a deterrent to them:

Delivering on Time

The one big problem Nokia is facing right now is the ability to deliver on time. They still don’t have the OS for the Nokia N8 fully ready and they don’t have a clear cut idea when it would be ready, even though they keep saying that it would be ready in the next few weeks. For a device that was announced months ago, it should have been ready by now.

Nokia, in my opinion, do not have the flexibility to bile time, because there are not many devices out there from them that would make people go crazy. They have to keep pushing devices as fast as they can. I have met and heard from people who were anxious to get their hands on the Nokia C6 and other Nokia devices, however, the numerous delays have made them go to some other manufacturer. Driving away customers to the competition is something which Nokia does not want to be doing right now.

Stick With One OS/Platform

Right now Nokia has too many things going on at once, they have an unfinished Symbian^3 which is baffling. They are also already working on Symbian^4 which is baffling again, considering that they haven’t yet finished work on the predecessor.

To top that they have , which is again a good OS, but Nokia hasn’t yet found good devices to put them on. There was a lot of disappointment when Nokia did not speak about Meego at the Nokia World 2010, that goes on to show what developers and consumers have been waiting for. In my opinion, they should just stick with one platform and continue working on it, rather than doing things simultaneously and having nothing ready at all.

Another problem I came across while speaking with Nokia product managers was that, the future Nokia Symbian^4 OS will not be compatible with older devices including the Nokia N8 and Nokia E7. Hey Nokia, why don’t you take a leaf out of and books? Most of their devices are portable to any new OS they ship, why couldn’t you do it with your latest high-end devices at-least? That is an absolute #FAIL for me.

Creating a Smartphone Browser

I understand that they are working on one, but they should have been ready with it. Smartphones are as much about browsing as much as about apps. In the past two years, every other smartphone browser has grown leaps and bounds except for Nokia’s. Agreed that they are working on a new browser, but where is it? Why was there no demo at Nokia World? Why isn’t the new browser shipping with your latest flagship device?

Stop Confusing Users With Similar Devices

Out at Nokia World, 4 devices were announced, the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C6 and Nokia C7. All of these devices were similar except for the Nokia E7 which had a QWERTY. The point here is that, most of the devices had the same features, some had more, some had less.

Nokia here wants people in different segments to have affordable phones, but why are you cloning your flagship device? Why offer competition to your own devices? If you want to create affordable phones, do it, but do not confuse the users as to which one they should buy. Just make a flagship device and sell it, then make affordable devices which are not similar but offer smartphone capabilities.

These are just some of the things on top of my mind which I feel is hindering them right now. I may be right or wrong, but remember, these are my opinions. The future is now in Nokia’s hands, let’s hope they don’t ruin it going forward.

First Look At iTunes 10

Apple announced the iTunes 10 today at the special music event, and I was able to download it just before 10PM Eastern Time. As compared to earlier version of iTunes, iTunes 10 is only about 72.2MB in size.

The installation of iTunes went fairly well, and it was up and running in a few minutes. The new interface in iTunes 10 is almost similar to iTunes 9.2, however, Apple has used a pretty weird looking icon for iTunes 10 and has also changed the buttons and other icons. Overall, I did not like  the new look for iTunes 10.

After downloading and installing iTunes 10, I spent some time looking at it and found it to be pretty OK as compared to what was expected of it. Here are some of my views about the new features in iTunes 10.

TV Show Rentals

iTunes 10 TV Shows Rental

iTunes 10 has added a new feature where users could rent out TV shows for 99c. They offer episodes from the latest TV shows and also some classic TV shows. Shows include the usual suspects like Family Guy, Glee, The Cleveland Show, Prison Break, Bones and so on. However, you will also find similar shows for free on

iTunes 10 TV Show Rentals Download

I tried to watch a free TV show, 30 Rock Recap Special and the download in itself was set to take 20-30 minutes, so it could not be done in time for the review. This is particularly annoying on an high speed network. I will update this review with my views on the quality of the videos.

iTunes TV Show Rental Quality

Update: The TV Show finally downloaded and the quality is pretty good and definitely on par with Hulu.

iTunes TV rentals will allow you to watch the TV shows within 30 days of you renting it, however, once you start watching a show, you have to finish it within 48 hours or else you will not be able to watch it again. The TV shows can be watched on either you PC, or . There is no option for users, but iPad users will also get the ability with iOS 4.2 for iPad and AirPlay.

iTunes Ping

Apple introduced iTunes Ping today, a social networking for music lovers and probably a rival. I tried out Ping and found it to be pretty decent. Ping can be accessed from the left sidebar of iTunes and requires you to use your Apple account to login.

iTunes Ping Welcome Screen

Once you have logged in, you will be shown a series of screens that ask for your profile information. Once you have logged in, you will see a list of people to follow, which is something typical to what you will see with Facebook and .

iTunes Ping Recent Activity

iTunes Ping also allows you to connect with your Facebook friends who are using Ping. Just like any other social networking, the key to Ping is people. So you will have to start following people to see their activity, music recommendations and more.

One thing I noticed is that Ping is quite buggy and you will notice quite a few problems while using different features with it. For example, I had to try several times before I could connect my Facebook account with Ping. Also the navigation is buggy, sometimes clicking on page numbers will do nothing and so on. However, this service is quite new and will be polished with time.

Another downside to Ping is that, since it has launched today, I could not find many people to find or follow. I will leave it at it and see how it works when I have more people to follow and recommend music to.

Faster Synching With Devices

Apple promised faster synching and more real-time storage indicators with iTunes 10. I tried synching my device by adding some music and sync was definitely more faster than what I have seen on earlier version of iTunes. However, I had some problems with iTunes recognizing my device and it took unplugs and iTunes restarts to see the device in iTunes.

These are just some of the new features I have toured in iTunes 10, of course might be several more enhancements in it, but these are the core features that you should be looking at if you want to upgrade to iTunes 10. Also Apple might require users to upgrade to iTunes 10 to install future updates. So go ahead and give it a try, you can download iTunes 10 by visiting

Pre-Order iPod Touch 4G at Apple Store or Amazon

Earlier today, Apple announced the 4G with Retina display, FaceTime, video recording and Game Center. Apple has already begun accepting pre-orders for the iPod Touch 4G which will start shipping in one week. The best part about pre-ordering from the Apple store is that you will get a personal engraving at the back of the device, with text which you can personalize before the order.

iPod Touch 4G

Amazon is also accepting pre-orders for the iPod Touch 4G 32GB model which is selling for $299, however, unlike Apple, Amazon does not charge you taxes, so you save a good 25-30$ on your order through Amazon.

There are no other iPod Touch 4G models available on Amazon though, so if you are looking to buy the 8GB or 64GB iPod Touch 4G models, you will only be able to do in on the Apple Store for now. Pre-order the 32GB iPod Touch 4G from Amazon.

Download Paid iPhone Apps, iPod Touch Apps, iPad Apps For Free

Owning an , or is incomplete without the numerous useful apps available in the Apple app store. However, not all of the apps available out there are free of cost, and you might have to shell out a decent amount of money to get your hands on some useful apps and addicting games.

Free iPhone Apps and Games

I have owned my iPod Touch for quite a lot of time now and have more than 250 apps and games installed on it, most of the apps I have installed are paid apps which I have downloaded for free, well not illegally though. So how did I do it? Well by keeping an eye on price drops and free apps available every day.

So do you want to install paid ,   and for free? Well, here are some places where you can find free paid apps.

App Shopper

App Shopper which I had written about in the past is a website which tracks price drops and new apps in the app store. This is a one stop solution for finding paid apps which go free for a short period of time.

If you visit this website daily, you will find a lot of paid apps and paid games which are free and can download it to your iTunes account. This is definitely one of the best way to download apps whose price has dropped. Visit it at

Open Feint Free Games

Open Feint Logo

Open Feint is one of the biggest game tracking and socializing platform for iPhone games. However, in addition to adding the social network twist to your games, Open Feint also offers one free game everyday through their Game Spotlight program.

You can either find new free games by visiting or downloading their Game Spotlight iPhone App from here which will allow you to track paid games which go free on your iDevice.

Free App A Day

Free App A Day or FAAD as it is called ties up with several apps and games developers to offer a free app a day, you can download the app to your iDevice and use it for free. There are lot of interesting apps and games which can be downloaded for free from this website. Visit it at

There are many more options to find paid apps which can be downloaded for free, but trust me you won’t need anything else than these three websites to fill up your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad with some cool games and apps for FREE.

Search Google Docs and Sites in Gmail

Gmail has introduced a new feature in which allows users to search for data in your linked and Google Sites account from within Gmail.

Google Docs and Sites Search for Gmail

The "Apps Search" lab feature extends search with Google Docs and Sites results. It will find the most relevant docs and sites and show them below the Gmail search results. The feature is definitely interesting and will allow users to quickly find documents and pages from the other services.

However, the feature does not seem to be working fully right now as my searches did not return results from my Google Docs account. This might be because Gmail might take some time to index all the files in the Google Docs and Sites account.

To enable the feature go to your Google Labs tab in Settings (click here) and scroll down till you see a header for "Available Labs". Under this header enable the "Apps Search" feature and save your settings.

The next time you use Gmail to search for something, you will also be show results from your Google Docs and Google Sites account.

Fix Samsung Galaxy S Stalling Issue

The Samsung Galaxy S is one heck of an Android phone. For me, it is without a doubt the best Android phone in the market right now. However, the phone has one irritating problem. If you guys had read our Samsung GalaxySamsung Galaxy S S review, you would have read about the stallingissue the phone suffers from. However, the stallingissue was considerably reduced in the latest firmwares. Nevertheless, the modding community started working like crazy to fix this stalling issue. Mimocan’s lag fix solution was quite a popular one until now. His lag fix uses a modified kernel to move the /data files into the ext3/ext4 partition on an external microSD card. Without his lag fix, the Galaxy S scores anywhere between 800-900 points in Quadrant benchmark. With his benchmark, this scores jumps to 17xx points!

Nevertheless, the modding community was still not satisfied with this solution. Now a new lag fix solution has come up which pushes the Quadrant benchmark score to a whopping 22xx points! This new lag fix does not even require an external microSD card to work with. This new lag fix is pretty complicated to work with, so folks like Chainfire and RyanZA came up with one click lag fix applications. In fact, Galaxy S owners can now root and fix this stalling issue in just one simple step. Here are the two is the link to the different lag fix applications.

Schedule Emails in Gmail and De-Clutter Your Inbox With Boomerang

One feature which I miss in Gmail is the ability to schedule emails so that they go out at a certain time. Scheduling emails is similar to scheduling tweets in but scheduling emails have a lot more advantages. One of them is that you get an opportunity to review and correct mistakes in your messages before they go out (which do happen at times).

Gmail does not allow you to schedule emails as of now, and they might not do that in near future. However, Gmail does offer users with an option to undo send a message for up to 20 seconds. Nevertheless, it would always be nice to have a feature which would allow you to schedule your email messages too.

Schedule Email in Gmail

In comes Boomerang, a and which allows you to schedule email messages to go out after a certain period. As you can see from the screenshot above, Boomerang allows you to schedule messages to go out after a set time and even allows you to schedule an exact time for the message to go out.

Once you schedule the message, Boomerang will store the email headers on their servers and send it out at the specified time. Pretty neat solution for an online email service.

De-Clutter Gmail Inbox

Boomerang’s usability does not just end with scheduling email messages in Gmail, it also allows you to de-clutter your Inbox by hiding certain emails and only displaying it after a certain time. For example, if you get an email from someone about something you have to do tomorrow, you might star that email or add it to your TODO list. However, Boomerang will allow you to hide the email message for now and show it in your Inbox at a specified time.

This can come in very handy when you receive a bill and have to pay it after few days, you can have Boomerang show that message in your Inbox after few days so that you remember to pay the bill on time.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Boomerang would cause several users to freak out about privacy since it has full access to your emails. However, the company makes it clear that they only store the email headers of a message on their servers so that they can identify it, and do not store the email body.

Other than that, Boomerang adds a very impressive feature to the already impressive Gmail and also helps you to de-clutter your Inbox and view important messages when you want to. Overall we would highly suggest our readers to try this out.

Though Boomerang is invite only, the link below might allow you to download the extension for Google Chrome and Firefox.

Rating: 4.5/5 (Excellent)

Update: Download link no longer works, just head over to and use the invite code “techiebuzz” without the quotes to download the extension.

Gmail Now Allows You To Change Undo Send Period

Remember the feature called Undo Send by Gmail which allowed you to avoid those OOPS moments which happen when you send emails to someone and realize that there was something missing, or even realize that you should not have sent that email in the first place?

Well, yes thanks to that I have revoked several emails in the past, however, the only problem with it was that Google only allowed you to undo send for 5 seconds.

But wait, did you visit your Gmail settings page recently? If you did, you will notice a new feature where you can change the cancellation period and set it up be up-to 20 seconds. This is definitely a great addition and will now allow for more graceful undo’s than the scrambling which happened when the Undo send was only limited to 5 seconds.
