There are several free excel/spreadsheets alternatives you can download and use on the desktop, here are the best picks, that do their job well and don’t cost you a dime.

Open Office Calc Open Office Calc is a desktop based application that is similar to Microsoft Excel. This program also has some advanced features like Advanced DataPilot technology, which makes it easy to pull in raw data from corporate databases; cross-tabulate, summarize, and convert it into meaningful information.

IBM Lotus Symphony Spreadsheets IBM Lotus Symphony Spreadsheets lets you create, edit, share, and save a variety of spreadsheets. You can create new documents, import existing documents, or choose from a set of document templates. Contextual toolbars configured to the appropriate spreadsheet editing task display as you navigate the various parts of your work.

Abykus – Abykus 2.0 is an easy to use spreadsheet program designed for both business and scientific applications. The program includes a statistics wizard, as well as over 190 built-in math, trig, matrix, financial, date, time, string, coordinate geometry, and 3D graphic display functions. Up to 32 separate, 65534 row by 255 column, worksheets can be loaded and accessed at one time.

Gnumeric Gnumeric or the Gnome Office Spreadsheet is a part of the GNOME desktop environment. Gnumeric can read files saved with other spreadsheets and offer a customizable feel that attempts to minimize the transition from other spreadsheet programs.

This application is created using Java, so you will have to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE), before you can use the application.

Spread32 – Spread32 is a tiny spreadsheet program that supports 256 columns x 65536 rows x 255 sheets, formulas with over 300 functions, sorting with multiple keys, freeze panes etc. It may not have all the bells and whistles of its beefier cousins, but it is an excellent choice if you just want to fire up something instantly for some quick-and-dirty calculations.

Google Spreadsheets Google Spreadsheets is a part of the family, it allows you to create spreadsheets, import excel files and share and collaborate on them online in a easy to use interface, all you need is a browser and internet connection.

Zoho Sheets Zoho Sheets allow you to create, edit and access your spreadsheets from anywhere and share them with anyone, without having to attach a file. Zoho Sheets also allow multiple users to work on a spreadsheet simultaneously.

EditGrid – EditGrid is an Online Spreadsheet service delivering Data on Demand. With majority of Excel features, EditGrid allows you to start working easily. With sharing, collaboration & publishing features, EditGrid serves a big set of use cases better than Excel. Connected to live data sources, EditGrid delivers data on demand.

Num Sum Num Sum brings to you online, simple, sharable web spreadsheets. In other words, you can now create social spreadsheets. All you need to join in is a modern web browser.

Simple Spreadsheet – Simple Spreadsheet is a web-based spreadsheet program written in Javascript, HTML, CSS and PHP. It features formulas, charts, numeric formats, keyboard navigation, etc. JavaScript is used for the default data format and for the macros and formulas. Simple Spreadsheet is Free Software,

wikiCalc – The wikiCalc program lets you make web pages with more than just paragraphs of prose. It combines the ease of authoring and multi-person editing of a wiki with the familiar visual formatting and calculating metaphor of a spreadsheet. Written in Perl and released under the GPL 2.0 license, it can easily be setup to run on almost any server as a web application or on a personal computer to publish by FTP.

ZCubes Calci – CALCI is a web-based calculation engine which has all the features of typical spreadsheets. It is far more powerful than other such applications and has over 1000 statistical, scientific and financial functions.
