If you want to use PostgreSQL with WordPress there is a WordPress plugin that will allow you to do it without making any changes to the internal WordPress codebase.

PostgreSQL for WordPress (PG4WP) gives you the possibility to install and use WordPress with a PostgreSQL database as a backend. It works by replacing calls to MySQL specific functions with generic calls that maps them to another database functions.

When needed, the original SQL queries are rewritten on the fly so that MySQL specific queries work fine with the backend database.

Support for other database can also be added if the appropriate drivers are written for them.

We tested this out on a local installation and were able to use PostgreSQL with WordPress without any issues.

The only problem we see with the plugin is that you need to perform a fresh install for this to work, however it might work on older installations if you are able to import the MySQL database to PostgreSQL.

Many WordPress administrators do not usually login to the admin dashboard, thus missing out on new plugin updates made available by plugin authors.

Many a times these plugin updates are critical and may address a crucial flaw in the plugin or add a exciting feature, to keep you up-to-date on the new updates available for plugins you use (or also those that are deactivated) without having to visit the admin dashboard, you can use the plugin update email notifier plugin.

It runs in the background on a daily/weekly/monthly basis and checks for updates available in plugins and emails you a digest.

Installation is simple, just download the plugin and upload it to your plugins folder, once you have uploaded the plugin, activate it.

VERY IMPORTANT: Once you have activated the plugin don’t forget to set up the plugin to run according to your needs, this setup is required so that the plugin knows when to run and send you email updates about it. Just head to the settings page and change the settings accordingly, if you do not want to change the settings just hit the Save Settings button once.

You can choose to receive updates once a day, once a week or once a month, by default the updates will only include active plugins you are using, however you can choose to get updates for inactive plugins as well.

If you want to stop receiving emails for plugin updates, you can choose that option too without having to disable the plugin.

Here is the format in which you will receive plugin update emails.

If you choose to get updates for inactive plugins, the plugin will flag it in the email making it easier to decide whether or not you need to head to the admin dashboard to update the plugin.

Minor Update Released at May 23rd 2009 10:43 PM EST : Just pushed a small update to the plugin, it is to fix a issue with the feed ID I was storing in the database, earlier version used INT to store the value, newer version uses varchar, if you have been using the older version of the plugin, updating to NUS v1.1 should automatically fix this issue, downloads available at the same place, you will get automatic update intimation in the Plugins Dashboard.

Sorry for the unwarranted update, I thought I had taken care of this issue. If you have  been using v0.1 earlier, please upgrade to v1.1, v1.0 may not work for people who used the older version and have not deleted the old tables.

Quite sometime back I had written a plugin that allowed users to notify unconfirmed email subscribers in their Feedburner account, the plugin worked pretty fine, however it stopped working after Google started moving users from the old Feedburner accounts to Google.

I have been getting several requests to fix this problem, and have finally had a chance to sit down and make the changes to the code to work with newer Google Feedburner accounts.

The new changes include an option for users to specify whether they are using a Old Feedburner.com account or the newer Google Feedburner Account, before starting with the notification process.

Hope this helps whoever have complained that the plugin stopped working for them, if you haven’t deleted the plugin, you should see a new dashboard alert to upgrade the plugin to a newer version.

Another slight change in the NUS plugin is that I have moved it from the original location to under the Tools menu now and changed the title to Notify Unconfirmed Subscriptions, so please keep in mind where you can find that option now.

Quite a few months and a Twitter discussion with Shankar Ganesh later, I have updated the plugin to allow blog authors to disable individual posts from appearing in feeds.

The new Feed Pauser plugin is designed to work just like the original, so if you want to delay your new posts from appearing in feeds, you follow the same original settings, however this addition allows users to control individual posts from appearing in feeds, and this behavior is separate and will work even if you have not enabled feed pauser to monitor and pause your feeds.

For example if you want to disable individual posts from appearing in feeds, you can select the “Hide In Feed” option while publishing posts.

Selecting this option will ensure that the post you are creating never appears in your feeds, until you change the option back to “Show In Feed”.

Changing a older post to Show In Feed will not change the order in which it will appear, this will only change whether or not it will show up in your feeds.

Feed Pauser is now available as a official WordPress plugin, so head there and download the plugin, do give your feedback and opinions about this.

However WLW does not have options to add additional fields to the post, so I have to manually go in and edit the posts when I want to customize the title or keywords for SEO optimization once I have published the post.

And I am pretty sure many other bloggers who use WLW and SEO Pack may be facing the same problems, this new plugin I created aims to do away with that issue, allowing users to specify the SEO Title, keywords and description from within Windows Live Writer interface.

Yes you heard it right, the All In One SEO Pack Bridge for WLW allows bloggers to specify the SEO title, keywords and description while composing posts from WLW.

This plugin is basically made up of two components, one is a WordPress plugin which you will need to install on the your WordPress blog, and another is a Windows Live Writer plugin which will allow you to add SEO details while creating or editing a post.

How To Use the All in One SEO Pack Bridge for WLW

The most important thing is to first install the WordPress plugin and activate it on your blog, this plugin is responsible for adding the All in One SEO Pack parameters to the database, which will then be used by the All in One SEO Pack plugin to optimize your titles and add keywords and description to the post.

Once you have installed the WordPress plugin, download the WLW plugin available as a DLL file (no installer available for this release, may add it in future releases) and drop it into the Plugins folder in WLW directory.

Adding SEO parameters to the post is fairly simple, however due to a issue I have with entering html comments while in edit mode, adding and deleting those parameters are slightly different (and I hope to improve them in future, any WLW plugin developers help will be appreciated here).

To add the SEO parameters from WLW, first select the source view or use the Shift + F11 shortcut key, once you are in source code view, place your cursor at the end of the post and select Add SEO Information from the Insert menu or from the sidebar. Doing this in source view is of utmost importance, or else the SEO parameters will not be added to the post.

A new window will popup asking you for the SEO parameters, input them and hit enter, it is not necessary to add all the parameters, just add those that you require.

If you want to edit the SEO parameters you will have to first delete them from the HTML source, look for the HTML comments that looks similar to the code snippet below.

   1: <!--aiospwlwbstart

   2: aiosp_title=SEO Title

   3: aiosp_keywords=SEO,KEYWORDS

   4: aiosp_description=SEO Description

   5: aiospwlwbsend—>

It may not exactly look the same, but you may have to delete the data between <!—aiospwlwbstart and aiospwlwbsend—>

I know that this adds a minor caveat to this plugin, but there is really no other way to do it, or if there is I am still to come across it, needless to say, I will certainly improve this plugin in the future and fix the issues.

I am NOT a C# developer but work most in Java and PHP, I learnt C# and the Windows Live Writer API in 2 days and wrote the WLW plugin, so please excuse the problems it has, I will definitely improve on it in the near future.

Important Instructions and Notes About This Plugin

Install the WordPress plugin to your blog – The All In One SEO Pack WLW Bridge plugin will only work if you install the WordPress plugin, so make sure you do that.

Install All In One SEO Pack Plugin – Well must I say more, without this plugin there is no point in having a bridge for WLW.

Use HTML Source to Add SEO Tags – Ideally I wouldn’t want this in the release, but due to some issues I am facing while inserting HTML comments into the post in Edit more, the tags can only be inserted using source view for now, am really sorry but this is how it works, will make sure to fix this in a future release.

Delete The Current Tags when you want to make changes – As instructed above, please delete the older tags from the HTML source before adding new ones, once again this will be improved upon in future releases.

This plugin is not a replacement for All in One SEO Pack – This plugin is not a part of All in One SEO Pack plugin and neither does it aim to duplicate its functionality, the only reason for creating this plugin is to allow users to add SEO tags from Windows Live Writer.

The WordPress plugin is required for this feature to be available through WLW, and it only reads the contents and stores the SEO parameters in the database, it does not make changes to how your title is optimized or add keywords or description to your post, those things will be handled by the All In One SEO Pack plugin.

• Figure out a way so that users do not have to use the source view to specify the SEO details.
• Allow users the option to make changes to entered SEO tags, without having to delete them from the HTML source.
• Include the SEO parameters that have been added using the WordPress Dashboard, so that they can be changed or edited using Windows Live Writer

The problem with extending something in a popular software always has it’s expiry date and likewise WPAU has to come to a end. Why? Because WordPress is building this into it’s core in WordPress 2.7.

What Is Feed Pauser And What Does It Do?

Feed Pauser is a plugin I wrote to address a issue I have been facing for a long time, the option to delay publishing a post to a feed. Feed pauser, pauses a post from being made available through RSS.

The reason was that several times, I would have made some mistakes in the post grammatically, spellings or even added a wrong link, with instant feed publishing the readers who already received the feeds may see wrong data, which can be avoided if we have a option to pause the feed for a certain amount of time.

In addition to that when you apply styles to WordPress through Windows Live Writer, a test post is published which looks bad when your RSS readers see it, this can easily be avoided with a delay between publishing a post to your site and it being available through your feed.

How does Feed Pauser Work?

Feed Pauser allows you to set a time delay between post publishing and its availability through your feed, to setup the delay you will need to visit manage page and setup the delay between publishing and feed availability. Here is a video that shows you how to setup Feed Pauser.

Note: You will have to set up the options in Manage –> Feed Pauser, before it can actually work

How Do I Get All The Feeds To Work Normally?

There are two ways to get your feeds to work normally, either de-activate the plugin or disable feed pauser from the manage page.

Will The New Posts Never Be Available As Feeds?

No, all your posts will be available to the feeds after the pause time has completed.

Will Feed Pauser Affect All My Posts?

Yes, currently feed pauser will affect all your posts, please read the next question to know what’s planned for the future.

What Is Missing? What Will be Available In The Future Versions?

This is a very basic version of Feed Pauser and there will be several things to be included in future releases, there are certain things I am working on, which include, setting feed delay at a post level, completely disabling a post from appearing in your RSS feeds and so on. These features should be made available in next few days or weeks, depends on the time I get, but I am totally dedicated to rolling out these features.

So rest assured you will definitely see it in next few days certainly.
