How to use Usb Manager

Download USB Manager and install it. The software is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. After the installation is complete, you will see a system tray icon which looks similar to a USB drive.

Right click the icon and you will have all the options to tweak USB Manager.

You can disable USB printers, scanners and attached audio devices using this tool. To lock a USB drive, go to options and choose a password. It’s that simple.

Here is how the options panel looks:

To lock your USB storage devices, you need to first choose a password. After you have chosen a password from the options panel, click the USB manager icon from system tray and select “Disable all storage devices”. To test the settings, just enter a USB storage device in your system. You won’t be able to see the USB drive icon in “My computer”. (also read: How to back up and restore usb drives)

Anyone trying to disable USB manager from system tray will have to enter the password that you have chosen earlier. Killing the USB Manager process from task manager won’t help either. You cannot access the USB drive as long as it’s disabled and the program is installed in your system.

You can auto run USB Manager with Windows start up and use a custom hot key to lock all USB devices instantly. This software can be useful when you don’t want anyone to access the USB devices of your system in your absence. For example: someone may try to copy important files from your system or run a malicious script etc.

USB manager is cool and works perfectly in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. If the manufacturer could include automatic locking of USB drives after a predefined timed interval, it would be even more beneficial.

How to password protect an image with Lock Image

Following are the steps involved to get started with Lock Image:

1. Download the Lock Image Zip file.
2. Unzip the program and launch it. After that, just drag and drop any image into the application window.
3. Navigate to File and choose “Save as”. Enter any name and the file will be saved as an exe file.
4. You will be prompted to choose a password. Enter the desired password and you have successfully locked the image

You can share the locked executable file with anyone and when they click it, they will be asked to enter a password. The people with whom you share your locked image do not need to have Lock Image or any other software installed in their system. The application is portable and thus can be used in any computer from a usb drive without requiring any installation.

Lock Image is great for password protecting images and converting them into exe files. It’s portable and you do not need any installation. No compatibility problems and even a kid can use it easily.

New Features in FileZilla 3.3.0

Tabbed browsing Support: Glad they have added this feature. The latest version of FileZilla has added tabbed browsing, so you can connect to multiple servers in the same window. The earlier versions required you to use two separate windows to login to two ftp accounts.

This would be a real time saver, as you can now browse different directories of your website easily. On a new tab, you can connect to the same server or connect to a different server. The tabs acts just like browser tabs:

• Double click in open tab area to open a new tab
• Middle click closes the current tab.
• Ctrl + T opens a new tab.

Bookmark important locations of your directories: Another much sought after improvement. You can bookmark an important location of your website so that you won’t have to manually navigate to the folder the next time you connect to the ftp server.

The bookmarks are arranged under the Bookmarks option in the menu bar.

Upgrading from a previous version

The newer version will preserve user settings if you are upgrading from a previous version. Download the latest version of Filezilla.

Lots of improvements in the newer version, but I would like to see “Back up” options added in the next release. The ability to back up and restore ftp settings is much needed.

Waver is based on the iPhone version of Google Wave and comes with a disclaimer right on the Adobe page itself:

This is an iPhone version of wave and running it on a computer might not load elements like buttons and other UI elements, however, you can click on the text and still use wave. Wave for iPhone is still under development and as it becomes more stable, this application will automatically work better.

However, this app is not all that bad when used. You can do the same things as the normal version of Google Wave minus the three columns. The same options are available on top of the app, and yes you can view embedded video and images! You will notice the same wave used for my first impressions post of Google Wave here.

The only thing missing from the experience is the spell checker. Spelly is notably missing, and I am guessing Google has not been implemented it for the iPhone version. Apart from that, my display picture is not being displayed. Since that sort of craziness keeps happening now and then, I blame that on Google’s beta-woes more than some inherent problem with the app itself.

However, it is a memory hog. The app takes ~82MB of the memory while Raptr which is an IM client based on AIR takes about half of that to run. This should be rectified in later versions.

In all Sayani’s app is well worth a look, especially if you are one of those who like to tweet via Google Wave. Once Google Wave has been completely released to the public, perhaps this app will prove to be more useful than what it seems to be now!

Ninja Pendisk is a portable application which sits quietly in the system tray and springs into action as soon as any USB device is inserted. It scans the USB drive for commonly virulent files like autorun.inf and ctfmon.exe and cleans it if any malware if detected. It also immunizes your pendrive from further infection by creating a folder called Autorun.inf with elevated privileges.

Ninja Pendisk is absolutely bare-bones software. There is basically no interface to speak of. All the configuration options are provided through the context menu of the system tray icon. It is completely automated and scans any device as soon as it is plugged-in. However, it doesn’t present any option to scan an already plugged in device or hard disks.

In my testing I found that the immunization aspect of Ninja Pendisk to be overly simplistic. I was able to delete the autorun.inf folder without any problem. Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine does a better job at immunization by making it almost impossible to remove the autorun.inf folder without re-formatting the USB Drive. However, it did succeed in removing all the malware from my pen drive. Ninja Pendisk does a decent job at protecting you from USB viruses, but there isn’t any reason why you would need it if you already have an antivirus software.

We all know how bland the default Music player of Nokia S60v5 phones looks. Nokia’s "XpressMusic" branded phones provide exceptional music quality but lack an awesome looking Media player UI as in the Apple iPhone or Sony Ericsson Phones. Being a touch based platform, Nokia should have spiced up the music player with more eye candy as their competitors provide.

Well Nokia is definitely not going to do anything regarding this matter now, but the developers of Landscape Pro, a very popular application for Nokia S60v3 based phones, have been developing an application called ‘iMelo’ whose interface matches the interface of iPhone’s coverflow closely. The application is still under development and will also be available for Nokia’s S60v3 phone, when launched.

I am going to share with you guys my experience with this application based on my couple of days of usage, but readers should keep in mind that this application is still under development and there will be a big difference in performance and even the UI may completely change when the final version is released.

When the application is first launched, you are presented with a static loading screen, and in the background the application scans your whole memory card for audio files. Some people may like it, some may not. The problem here is that since the application scans your whole memory card and if you have a huge collection of songs then the application will take an extremely long time to start and all this while you will be staring at the static loading screen of the application.

Due to this at one point of time I thought the phone hung and was going to remove the battery, but just then the application started working.  The application does look stunning and the whole interface is nothing but an exact replica of iPhone’s Cover Flow style.

The CoverFlow style may look pleasing to the eye but the application is definitely slow and also has serious memory leakage issues. For example I had around 51MB of Free RAM on my Nokia 5800 before starting this application, after starting it, my free RAM went down to just 5MB within a couple of minutes. Since I am using a preview build here, I hope all these issues will be sorted out in the Final version. A very nice feature of this application is the inclusion of Kinetic Scrolling throughout the interface. This will definitely be useful for people who have a huge music collection on their phones.

What this application lacks is an equalizer along with Stereo Widening and Loudness Option. Being a preview version I could not use the volume control, so I can’t comment whether the loudness offered by iMelo is the same as the one provided by Nokia’s default Music player.

Inline language translation in Google toolbar

So how does the inline translation work? It is as simple as selecting your preferred language from the drop down list and clicking the translate button. When you are reading a webpage, Google toolbar can automatically detect it’s language. Just select the language you want to translate the page into and it’s done.

Above is the translated version of a page translated using Google toolbar. The url of the resulting page does not change, unlike the one translated using Google language translation gadget. Also, Google Toolbar can remember your chosen language preferences and the next time you visit a page, it can auto-suggest the language conversion. Currently it supports 40 international languages.

Other new features

High quality website suggestions : As you type your query in the Google search box, Google toolbar shows you website suggestions and links. If the website link is present in your Google bookmarks or browsing history then clicking those links takes you directly to the home page of the query. If the link is not present in your browsing history and bookmarks then you are taken to the search result page of the query.

Google Sidewiki : The new Google Toolbar allows users to add annotations and comments alongside any webpage they are viewing. Using an arrow icon from the sidebar users can add their views, likes and links about the webpage.

Private browsing supported : As Firefox 3.5 introduced private browsing mode, Google Toolbar will not override this and all your web history, pagerank and Sidewiki data will be hidden when you are surfing in private browsing mode.

Download the latest version of Google Toolbar. Note that you can use Google toolbar with Chrome and Internet explorer as well.

What sets ControlPad apart from other programs is its basic functioning style. You won’t need to key in the name of the application you wish to launch. Instead you will have to assign numeric identifiers to your most frequently used applications. Once you have associated your favorite applications with ControlPad you can launch them by simply pressing * (to bring up the ControlPad Console) and entering the appropriate numeric id. This is somewhat similar to speed dial functionality in Opera Browser (which itself is based on the Speed Dial functionality found in mobile phones).

If you are not a big fan of numeric identifiers you can also use strings which are easier to remember. ControlPad is designed to be controlled using the NumPad. However, Laptop users need not worry as it also offers a Laptop Mode which utilizes an alternate key configuration.

ControlPad is an advanced utility which would be relished by power users. It’s capable of doing a lot more than just launching applications. ControlPad supports Windows Console Commands and can even be used launch websites and perform online searches.
