The long awaited summer is finally arriving here are so are the stats for the month of May 2009, this month was pretty exciting since we started the Birthday Bash to celebrate our 3rd birthday, which by the way is coming up soon

However time to get back to telling the readers how we fared this month and what to expect in June. Here are all the interesting stuff we would want to let our users know from May 2009 .

Stats For May 2009

Traffic in May 2009

May saw an increase in traffic by 12%, however pageviews decreased a bit which was concerning, we are working towards getting the pageviews back up, however it would be great if you as a reader could suggest changes that you would want us to apply to keep users browsing on the site, your opinion is very important and I would really appreciate it a lot.

The better news with regards to the traffic is that I am pretty confident that we will cross the 1 Million PVs per month in next couple of months, which is pretty exciting for me, don’t forget to give suggestions on how we can improve the navigation and keep users interested in browsing for more content.

Feed Subscribers in May 2009

As for regular readers the feed subscription grew by over 350 users which was good but we would still like to grow more, part of the feed subscribers we have may not be included in the current count, since the browser discovery was pointing to the direct feed and not the Feedburner feed, hopefully we should cross 3000+ subscribers this month.

Income in May 2009

As far as income goes, we switched around a few advertisers and have been selling several direct advertisements, which has helped us grow the income by a little bit more than 40%, once again it’s really good, however the income is still almost 50% away of my goal to consider to switch to full time blogging, hopefully it should happen pretty soon.

Two New Concentrated Niche Blogs

Back in the day we always mixed up content which we though to change away a bit by expanding the network to cover individual niches that would give readers a better reading experience. We launched two different network sites that will focus on Mobiles and Gadgets.

Mobile Buzz

Mobile Buzz was the first one to go live, it basically focuses on everything related to mobiles including news, reviews, applications and more. Mobile Buzz is authored by me and Unitechy a engineering student who drools over mobiles and the telecom industry, I could not find a better fit for getting out the Mobile news.

There were several things that went right for us in March and we would like to highlight them to our readers.

Basic Stats for March 2009

Traffic was consistent during the month of March and we did an almost equal to Feb traffic, however we did lose a bit of traffic over a week, due to several issues with our servers at Slicehost, however the problem was due to Apache server, and we have now put in place a automated monitor to take care of server outages and keep your visit to Techie Buzz as smooth as possible.

Another peculiar problem we are facing is with the WordPress Supercache plugin, which sets the first category page as the home page, however as a temporary solution we have a automated robot in place to address this issue.

Our feed subscribers grew by more than 400 users in this month with our twitter updater @techiebuzzer gaining more than 30 new subscribers.

However we fell short of the 3000 feed readers we were aiming for, however we hope to make up for that in April, revenue grew 23% over Feb 2009, and we hope to add new advertisers for the month of April.

Along with that there are some basic stats I would like to share with our readers, after all you are the driving force for us writing content, so we want to have a equal peek at what’s behind the scenes for you.

Basic Stats for February 2009

There was a slight traffic drop in December 2008 and January 2009 due to a break I took, however traffic has jumped higher in February and we have seen traffic go back to more than half a million page views in less than 28 days, will definitely love to grow the traffic more, now that I am fully focusing on the blog.

Search Engine Traffic accounted for ~78% of the total traffic, and I will be aiming to grow this to around 85-90% which would automatically surge the traffic, I have plans in place, however will start implementing them somewhere in the middle of March, due to a rather busy schedule and other personal commitments.

We added over 400 new Feed Subscribers in the month and our twitter updater @techiebuzzer now has 84 followers, aiming to hit the 3000 mark in March.

Revenue grew 35% from January 2009, however it only grew 14% when compared to the peak month of November 2009, will be planning for better advertising options in March and hopefully should implement them by mid of March.

Gmail Custom Colors

Quite sometime back we had reported about Gmail themes, which allowed users to enhance the look and feel of Gmail, without the need to add any extensions or add-ons, however the Gmail developers have taken in a step further and announced the option for Gmail users to apply their custom colors to the theme.

To apply custom colors to your theme, click on the Settings link and click on Themes, scroll down till you see “Choose your own colors” and select the colors you want to apply to your theme.

Multiple Inboxes in Gmail

Gmail is pretty much becoming a heavily used email service, however it also allows you to import emails from other email providers, using the POP and IMAP protocol, along with another feature which will allow you to import email from Free email services.

If you think that managing several inboxes in a single email account is a hassle, the Gmail Blog has a excellent tip that will make it easier to manage several email accounts with Multiple Inboxes.

Gmail Title Bar Tweaks

If you are someone who often visits Gmail just to check on unread emails, a new Gmail Labs feature called Title Tweaks will allow you to skip visiting the page over and over again.

The Title Tweaks feature allows you to display the unread email count in the title bar itself, so that you can take a quick glance at the title bar and know if any new mails have arrived in your inbox.

To activate the feature, visit Settings –> Gmail Labs and activate the Title Tweaks feature.

Location in Signature

Another interesting feature from Gmail allows users to add their current location in their email signature, though there might be a bit of privacy concerns there, it is another feature which could be used to your advantage.

Multi-Attachment Select and Progress Bars

The latest feature to hit Gmail, is the ability to select multiple attachments at a time, and a new progress bar that will show you the upload process for the attachment.

Definitely useful since there are several times when you may want to send out more than one attachments, and adding them one by one is a definite pain.

Opera 9.6 Released

Opera finally released the the final version of the browser Opera 9.6, this version of the browser has several new enhancements, including a magazine style feed reader, expanded opera link, optimized opera mail, increase speed and more. They have also added support for several new languages including Indonesian, Ukrainian, Estonian, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil languages.

Yahoo Web Analytics

Yahoo has finally put the purchase of IndexTools to good news and re-launched it as Yahoo Web Analytics. The new service provides users with real time analytics, customizable executive dashboards, custom reports, comparative reporting scenario analysis and more.

This places Yahoo as a very strong competitor to Google Analytics. On the other hand Google Analytics have several new changes on the horizon, including integration with your AdSense account. New signups are invite only. Visit Yahoo Web Analytics.

Google Launches AdSense for Games

If you are not tired of playing the 150 flash games we told you about, gear up to see some relevant ads in them now. Google AdSense team has announced the introduction of AdSense ads for games. As a beta user of AdSense for Games, you can display video ads, image ads, or text ads within your online games to earn revenue.

Getting into the beta list is a bit tough though and you require to have a minimum of 500000 game plays each day with more than 80% of the traffic coming though US and UK.

uTorrent Releases v1.8.1

uTorrent one of the fastest and most popular bittorrent client (our favorite too) has released a new version 1.8.1 which fixes several bugs. µTorrent will never exceed the half-open limit now. This resolves the issue where trackers would all go offline after a few hours and require restarting µTorrent. It also connects to as many peers in 1.7.7 in all circumstances, as the connection distribution system has been fixed.

This version also fixes the issue for Vista users, where uTorrent crashed unexpectedly. Download uTorrent 1.8.1

Google Labs Adds Advanced IMAP Controls

If you have been impressed by the several new features introduced in Gmail Labs you could brace yourself for another new feature called Advanced IMAP Controls.

The main problem with using Gmail through IMAP has been the slow down of Outlook and other email clients. Advanced IMAP Control will help you choose which folders should be available through IMAP access, this will definitely help you curtail and restrict access to only certain folders making the IMAP access much more faster. You will need to visit  the settings page and enable Advanced IMAP Controls in Gmail Labs before you can start using it.

Once you have enable it you can setup the advanced IMAP controls by visiting the Forwarding and POP/IMAP section in the settings page.

Google Desktop 5.8 Now Much Faster and Stable

We have been big fans of Google Desktop search, but had a few problems with performance at times. The Google Desktop team have been listening to our problems, and have released Google Desktop 5.8 which improves performance and makes it much faster and stable.

We have been running the latest version for few days, and definitely see a lot less memory and CPU resources being used. You can download the last Google Desktop to see for yourself.

VLC 0.9.2 Released with new interface and better codec support

Popular open source all-format media player VLC has released a new update build 0.9.2, this update has a new user interface for Windows, Mac and Linux. This version also has better support for codecs and supports playing videos from YouTube, Google Video and more online video sites. Download VLC 0.9.2 for your OS.

Google Labs Adds Audio Indexing Feature

Google has rolled out a new feature which will index audio files in addition to the support for text, images and flash. This is a definite good news for podcasters who rely more on audio than text. Previously Google had rolled out a Speech to text, video search gadget.

Adobe Air Released for Linux

Adobe Air has finally been released for Linux systems, this would definitely see a huge increase in both Air users and application creators. We have been big fans of Adobe Air and have been using several applications including Tweetdeck for twitter, Tumbleweed for Tumblr and more.

Google Android  Phone To Debut Soon

TechCrunch reported that Google is planning to unleash the Android phone in mid October and yes it is not a iPhone. We expect the phone to be perfect to use for all Google services including email, maps, docs, calendar and more.

Yammer: Twitter for Companies, wins TechCrunch50

Yammer a twitter-like solution for companies has bagged the top award at TechCrunch50. Yammer allows companies to create a private network and send messages to employees within a company, this definitely looks good and much faster than sending out emails.

iTunes 8 Genius and iPod Nano 4th Generation

Google Docs the popular online document viewer and editor have added several new features including support for adding table of content, Thesaurus and Dictionary support, this is definitely good news for people who used bookmarklets or hacks to add these features into Google Docs.

Gmail Now Compatible With IE6

The Gmail and IE6 team have worked together to make Gmail available for the most used browser Internet Explorer 6, though we advice our users to move to a better browser like Firefox or Opera instead of sticking with IE6.

Gmail Labs Adds 6 New Features

Gmail Labs has added in new features to make things more interesting, including three new reply features which will allow you to make the reply to all a default button option, allowing you to set the time frame for the vacation response to be sent out in and quote selected text as a reply, which will add the text you select as a reply.

In addition to the reply function, they have also added support for labels which will allow you to add custom colors to labels, drag and drop the navbar and rearrange it like you want, just like the iGoogle homepage and a nifty little option to go to any particular label, by typing it in rather than having to click on the label links.

Dropbox For Linux and Now Available to General Public

Dropbox the popular file sharing service has now opened up to public, which would mean that you do not need any invitation to use the service, they have also made extended their software to work on Linux based systems. Download Dropbox and follow the instructions to signup for a new account.

Google AdSense Reports in Google Analytics
