However, for people who have several dozen applications on their system, portable applications can be slightly inconvenient. Most portable applications don’t provide any option to create start menu entry or desktop shortcuts. In other words, if you want to launch the utility, you will have to manually browse to its location. The same applies if you want to remove the utility. In the end, most such portable utilities end up being forgotten and lie around unnoticed in some corner of your system.

Zip-Installer-Install-Portable-Application

ZipInstaller is a free utility which installs all no-install applications which are packaged in zip files. It extracts them to a specified folder, places shortcuts in your startmenu and desktop and even creates an uninstall module which can be accessed from Add/Remove Programs.

Techie Buzz Verdict

ZipInstaller has an obvious limitation – it works only for those applications which are packaged in ZIP files. Like all Nirsoft Utilities, it performs a specific task and does it extremely well. While it will prove to be an indispensable resource to some, others won’t even feel the need for it.

Usually I don’t wait long to try out new browsers and I’ve been kicking the wheels on this one to see what shakes loose. However, I’m running the USB version which doesn’t require the typical intrusive “install” that most applications require.

For those of you who want to give Opera 10 a trial run, I can recommend Opera@USB. The download is a ZIP file, so simply unpack the program files where you want to keep them.  It’s also a portable application so when you are done trying it, you can simply delete the program folder and it’s really gone. No files or registry entries will be left behind to trouble you.

If you want any application of your choice on U3 USB flash drive, then you can use ‘PackageFactory for U3‘. Any application, which is U3-aware or is less dependent on Windows Registry can be converted into a U3P file using PackageFactory.

To create U3P files, you need to drag and drop the .EXE file which you want to install on your U3 USB drive (you need to include the DDLs, INIs and other necessary files to run the application successfully), and click on Create to generate the U3P file.

PackageFactory is free for personal, non-commercial use and the license costs $39.95 if used for business purpose.
