A rogue worm has been released which affects iPhone and iPod Touch with Open SSH installed through Cydia. The worm only affects users who have not updated the default password for OpenSSH.

According to Mashable:

The worm’s behavior is somewhat amusing: it changes your background to a photo of Rick Astley, then looks for other phones on the network to infect. That said, the exploit could easily be used by hackers with malicious intent for more nefarious purposes.

If you have Open SSH installed on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch, it is highly advisable to update the default password for OpenSSH.

GeoHotz has also created Blackra1n which allows you to unlock iPhone/iPod Touch 3G and 3GS devices.

The Blacksn0w update will let you unlock iPhone and use it on any other carrier. George Hotz has posted a video of the first unlocked iPhone 3GS phone baseband 05.11.07.

According to the video, Blacksn0w will most likely be released on November 4th 2009, so hang on till then and you can achieve carrier freedom with your phone .

We are happy to announce that the Wolfram|Alpha App for the iPhone and iPod touch popped up on the App Store’s "What’s Hot" list today. We are delighted that Apple selected the app to be featured, recognizing the intense interest and excitement being shown in Wolfram|Alpha.

We did check it out, and found that the app is definitely on the “What’s Hot” list and has also been in the “Top Grossing” segment when it launched.

When I heard about the public beta for LogMeIn for the iPhone, I knew that I–a current LogMeIn user–needed to get in on it.

LogMeIn is a remote access client that allows you to connect to your computer from anywhere in the world (with an internet connection.)

Needless to say, the beta didn’t disappoint me and LogMeIn Ignition was released for the iPhone yesterday (December 16.) At a whopping $29.99, this will probably be the most expensive app you’ll have on your phone. In this review, I’ll show you why it’s worth every penny and serves as a priceless replacement for using Safari to access LogMeIn online.

Yes, there are other remote desktop clients like RDP, JaaduVNC, MochaVNC Lite, WinAdmin, and others. Yes, they are cheaper; however, I’ve tried them, but because most of my computers sit behind a residential gateway (without a static IP address)–they just don’t work as well. Plus you get the added security of 256-bit encryption with LogMeIn. We’ll call that feature "Advantage one – Higher security"–more about the advantages later.

Note: In this review, I’ll refer to the iPhone; remember: this program works for the iPod touch too (requires 2.0 firmware update on either device.)

User Interface

Every good program needs a fantastic UI and LogMeIn ignition is no exception to this rule. Using the standard iPhone interface, LogMeIn seamlessly integrates with your phone’s look and feel and looks great. When you first open the app, you are presented with the login screen (Figure 1), which saves your credentials for later use–Advantage two. The program has a consistent look and feel that will make remote access painless.

LogMeIn Ignition Features

I’ve mentioned security, but what else does LogMeIn have? You can manage your entire computer collection (figures 2 & 3), add another computer in minutes, and even help someone with their computer without visiting them or confusing them with difficult set up needs. This all sounds great, but you can do this using Safari and save $30. However, if you use LogMeIn through Safari, you’ll notice next time you use LogMeIn from a computer, the remote desktop is set to HTML mode by default– not so with LogMeIn ignition. Yes, you get full access to your computer without screen refreshes slowing you down–advantage number three.

Navigation and Controls

The controls for LogMeIn Ignition are fantastic and push the limits of what the iPhone can do. There’s multi-touch, one-tap, two-tap, two-finger-touch, and more. Figure 4 shows the list of quick controls you’ll become familiar with–advantage four.

Distraction Free Access

One computer is distracting enough: by adding a second computer in with too many controls, you may find you never get any work done. With LogMeIn ignition for the iPhone, you are isolated to one environment and feel like you are working solely with your destination computer. I felt like I got a lot done–while on my phone! Figures 5 & 6 show how clean the interface is. Figure 7 shows how easy it is to start typing and be productive–advantage five.

Update: Cell phone companies never publicly said that iPhone lacks video camera capabilities, MMS, Bluetooth and only has a 2 Megapixel camera. Please contact your iPhone provider about it.

iPhone launched with much fanfare in India, but with no buyers, the top reason being the ill calculated pricing strategy in place. To top it people did not know that the phone did not have a video camera and are already complaining about it to the cell phone companies.

Going with the launches across India, it was not more than a dampener. To put it into perspective, the reception in a New York store would have beaten the reception iPhone got in the whole of the country, and they barely managed to snatch 1000 iPhones.

What Went Wrong?

Several things went wrong, like we told you earlier the pricing strategy was a big let down in a market that would not spend more than INR15000 ($350) for a phone, people who would have bought the phone would have been termed crazy if not Apple Fanboys.

To add to that fact, Apple doesn’t carry the feature many Indians rely to communicate, Multimedia messages are a done thing and iPhone does not have a feature that supports that, add to a fact that iPhone does not have video capabilities and also lacks Bluetooth.

This in lieu with the fact that India does not have a 3G plan in place yet, which would mean that users have to surf on a EDGE/GPRS connection along with having to foot a data plan bill that would be triple of a regular phone users bill, just to access the Internet on a limited bandwidth. If you are in US you could compare this with the first generation iPhones, which had problem with Internet connections.

Would It Be Good?

There is some news that the prices have been cut, though this seems to be a real desperate measure to get more buyers, given the mentality and lack of features, we definitely don’t see a hike in the sales figures in India. Alas the phone that sold in millions in the US, does not convert to a killer phone worldwide, there is Nokia (our favorite) to push Apple’s tails to a level where they can smell it, and right now they surely smell something bad there.

Vodafone had been the pitching high and low to be the provider to launch across Europe and Asia, but lost it to Airtel who will be officially releasing iPhone 3G with Apple’s support in India on 22nd August, Vodafone too will be releasing on the same date. Please note prices may change until the launch, so don’t pre-book the phone as of now.

Vodafone is still the third largest cellular provider in India, and they have been the market for almost a year after taking over Hutch (also known as Orange in several countries), according to our source, Vodafone has almost finalized a plan to take a price cut with iPhone, which, they will simultaneously release with Airtel, to gain profit with quantities, though we still say this news is (un)confirmed, iPhone’s sold through Vodafone will cost at least Rs500-Rs2000 lesser than what Airtel will pitch, which again thru our source is going to be roughly Rs 22000 for the iPhones sold through Airtel with taxes.

The price cuts would eventually increase the demand for iPhone through Vodafone since a savings of approximately Rs500-2000 is welcomed across most of the population in India, and that would definitely gain more consumers for the Vodafone brand, with the rage iPhone has already been creating with people in India, it will definitely be big.

Apple PR has officially confirmed the launch on their website. Airtel will be launching the iPhone at midnight 21st August and the pricing will be in the range of 20000 INR (~$500).

"iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year and Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector," Sanjay Kapoor, President, Bharti Airtel mobile services, said.

Earlier Vodafone the 3rd largest cellular provider had been rumored to release the iPhone on August 18th, but it seems that Airtel will beat them to the launch, there is no official confirmation by Apple on the Vodafone deal.

We expect the iPhone to sell like hot-cakes since it coincides with the introduction of the superior 3G network in India, though this may not be the first time people in India get their hands on a iPhone, there have been many users who already own a hacked iPhone which works on other SIM cards sold for more than 40000 (~$1000).

To update the software for your iPhone or iPod touch, connect the device to your Mac or PC and click “Check for updates” in iTunes.

Your jailbreak applications may stop working after you apply this software update, so you may want to check the jailbreak application publisher, to see if there are any new updates available from them.
