Stuck with Windows. Started off with Windows as it was the most common. But, now, what makes the switch to Linux impossible is that I work a lot on video stuff (editing, compositing and the like..) I’ve got a strong love for Macs.

Firefox. No other browser have convinced me to shift from Firefox. Extreme customization, geek-factor, active community.

Launchy This one is my personal favorite. Excellent piece of free software, that *works*. MusicBrainz Picard This one helps me to keep my huge music collection clean and well – organized. What gadgets do you own as of today?

As of now, none of my possessions could be called gadgets !!! I own a WD 120GB PortaHDD I wish to have a SE Xperia X1 and a Macbook in couple of years.

What Feed Reader(s) do you Use?

At first I used Google Reader and now I’ve switched to Feedly. Again, these days, I’ve developed the idea of subscribing to the blogs I like via email and creating a separate label & filter for it in GMail. (because, I love convergence and isn’t it better to have all in one place?)

Do you have any favorite Tech Blogs you read on a daily or regular basis?

No. I read them as they come to me via the feeds and TwitterFeeds or recommendations from others. Feedly features a nice recommendation system.

I was passionate and and wanted to learn more and stay updated. Then, I thought about sharing my thoughts, insights and opinions with you too !!

What tools do you use for Blogging?

I use the default WP editor to publish posts. I usually upload my pics either at Flickr/TinyPIC/Photobucket. Thinking about trying out LiveWriter

What analytic tools do you use to track traffic on your blog?

Google Analytics WP-Stats (plugin) Recently, I’ve installed Woopra too (for the live stats fun part of it; not for regular analytics)

Is the technology niche saturated today? What are the things you do to keep your blog unique from others?

A big YES. It’s so saturated that many people turn their heads away, when they hear the word – “tech” !! But, it’s the best niche, if you want to make quick bucks. But, I don’t do the money-making-practices (like writing posts with keywords ranking high in Google Trends and the like) and as such I don’t make any real money out of my blog !! (Current AdSense Balance : $22) To keep my blog unique, I try to write more INSIGHTS and THOUGHTS rather than reviews so that my posts get some reading value.

How do you react to a product/software release? Do you feel the urge to blog it?

No, unless it’s something revolutionary or ground-breaking. Talking about a product release puts you in the blog-echo-chamber, and I don’t want that. Again, if your aim is Money, do it, as there is nothing wrong in doing that.

What are the features, qualities you look in a product / software before you blog about it?

There must be something in the product that enables the users to do a thing more efficiently than they used to do. For example, I would’ve blogged the launch of Tab-Browsing feature as it was revolutionary but not the release of newer IE/FF versions as it has no sole new feature.

Don’t you think readers get a overdose of content with new product/software releases?

Of course, YES and that’s why I keep myself away from the reviews. !! But, I congratulate those who write good tried-and-tested deep reviews of products.

Past / Future and Some Advice for Readers

Going into the past, would you have liked to take up another niche? Please elaborate.

I’ve never regretted on taking up this niche. This have helped me a lot. Before 6 months, I didn’t knew what is WordPress, Twitter, Feed, RSS, and much more. As regarding another niche: I would love to launch a new one with logical analysis and guidelines and insights that will help the people to lead a better life and invoke the potential inside them and to make them do, what they should-be-doing.

Going into the future, what would you do to stay in the higher bracket of tech blogs?

Always think with the future in mind. Follow the new developments. Stay Updated.

When you start, have a right and strong policy framework and stick to that, even when you are doubtful about the future.

Hey guys, I’m Narayanan and I blog at Tech Spikes (http://www.techspikes.com). I started this blog in April 2007 and it’s been a roller coaster experience so far. Before I started this, I used to blog at Blogger and that was a total time pass. I decided then to venture into professional blogging and that’s when Hangout Digger(HD) came into being. Tech Spikes(TS) is actually my second proper blog even though my favorite still is HD!

I do have another blog on very crisp movie reviews (not the long ones you are used to ) – The Movie Analyst (TMA) Apart from blogging at Tech Spikes I also run a small marketing management & PR firm called The Mantra Consulting and dabble with both online and offline markets.

Windows! I’ve tried Ubuntu, but Windows has always been my primary OS.

Firefox, if I have to use an alternate browser then it is IE8 (not any other version of IE – the rest are pathetic!) Google Chrome as of now is a big no no. It crashes Firefox The rest I’ve never tried!

Outlook for mails, Firefox for browsing, the complete MS Office bouquet of softwares for whatever they are used for, Winamp for music, VLC to play movies, GTalk for chatting, Twhirl for twittering, Mindjet MindManager for mind-mapping (can’t do without this one! – damn useful!), Team Viewer for screen sharing.. that’s all I can remember for now!

What gadgets do you own as of today?

I use a Dell Inspiron 6400, recently spoilt my SE K750i and I’m targeting the SE XPERIA, I use an iPod nano 2G to listen to music and I guess that’s it!

What Feed Reader(s) do you Use?

I use Feed Demon.

Tech Crunch & RWW – this one is a must read.

Why did you decide to blog about technology?

Aaah.. TS came into being because I realized that people around me (read that as people from my previous work place) did not know much about internet, various technologies n so on and they continued to be ignorant. I wanted TS to be a one stop shop for such people. That’s how it began!

Firefox for browsing, Smart Capture for screenshots, WLW for blogging (sometimes), coreFTP or FileZilla for uploading/downloading files.

Google Analytics, pMetrics (paid version), reinvigorate and now Woopra too! That’s one too many!

I don’t think it is saturated. In many parts of the world people are just beginning to use the internet. There’s always space for beginners. But then for all new blogging enthusiasts – Do start ASAP!

I love to check out new product releases and try them immediately. I do feel the urge to blog about it but then there’s always no time I’m going to try make some time for new releases though.

What are the features, qualities you look in a product / software before you blog about it?

Only one – whether it is of some use to me or not!

Yes.. but it is unavoidable. There are just way too many bloggers out their to give their opinions on new releases!

I did dabble on two other niches like I told you guys earlier – food and entertainment with HD & movie reviews with TMA.. However people seem to be more interested in technology than other niches.. Or I’ve got it wrong and made all the wrong moves! If you think you can come up with a better idea for my other two blogs, I’d love to hear some feedback!

Going into the future, what would you do to stay in the higher bracket of tech blogs?

I will coax myself to churn out more posts per day. There’s obviously a lot to write on, time is the only constraint!

I always feel that I should write about a product/software release, however as I’ve stopped blogging on ReviewSaurus – So, I generally read about it and then leave my comments on it.

What are the features, qualities you look in a product / software before you blog about it?

Every software has it’s PROS and CONS. I generally focus on the amount of features and ease of use. If a software has good features and a bad UI then it won’t be able to impress me. I’ll always prefer a software with decent features and excellent UI

No I don’t think so. There are people in the world who are not geeks like us and they don’t follow lot of tech blogs at once. Its geeks only who generally subscribe to so many rss feeds of similar niche and then get overwhelmed with the amount of information they see on similar topic.

Considering that I didn’t know much about blogging and how exactly it works, I made a good choice as Technology was always my passion. And I will surely pick the same niche even if I have the same level of knowledge (as I have now) .. I will surely go ahead and start a tech blog.

Well, it’s too broad to talk about it and I think there are lot of things which can be done. Getting in the mainstream media, guest blogging are some of the things which I’ll do regularly. Although, my main focus is Blog Design Studio at the moment

It is one of the most saturated niches on the web without a doubt. I tend to keep my blog unique by not throwing away a post on every tech news on the Internet. I just wait for the big fish to catch the hook and once it does, I do research, analyze the subject and then present it in a unique manner. The audience loves to read well-researched and in-depth articles.

How do you react to a product/software release? Do you feel the urge to blog it?

I definitely do. Despite the emails I receive daily about the launch of a new web app or software, I keep myself under control. Unless is something really off the hook, I don’t give it a review.

What are the features, qualities you look in a product / software before you blog about it?

It should be unique (which, in case of a web app, is hard to find) It should be free (I hate paid stuff and so does the readers)

Don’t you think readers get a overdose of content with new product/software releases?

They do but at the same time they like reading about it too. To understand the reader psychology, you need to act and think like a reader yourself. Readers love to read different opinions about a product/software to judge it better.

Going into the past, would you have liked to take up another niche? Please elaborate.

Health and Fitness. Not because Google AdSense pays high for it lol, but if I had such a blog I could have focused on my own health and fitness and this would have been a living example for my readers to see. Not that I am going to die of cancer lol, its just a niche I would like instead.

Going into the future, what would you do to stay in the higher bracket of tech blogs?

Not review all of the stupid new product/software released. Choose my content very carefully Focus on quality rather than quantity

Contrary to many beliefs, I am finding Social Media to be a waste of time. Google is the King, I get 95% of my traffic from Google. I know, there are many differences of opinions there. But this is my firm belief.

No, in fact I stay clear of it. I try to write about things which are not time specific. I try that my posts give value to a reader even after one year. This restricts me to blog about latest news, events and product releases.

I write for the sub-niche, where people are not that tech-savvy. So, I look for ease-of-use and mass appeal.

No, I think I was fortunate to make a wise decision and choose a niche where I have interests. They call it “Blogger’s Block” At that time, it helps you, if you operating in a niche, where you have actual interests.

Improve, Improve, Improve and work on SEO.

Browser Preferences: Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, Google Chrome or any other?

Though My PC warns me with a blue screen I still use lot of different browsers and software’s.Firefox and (lately) Chrome browser are suitable browsers which I use regularly.

Being a Tech Blogger, you would definitely have some favorite softwares, can you share them with our readers?

I prefer online services rather than softwares but I do use some simple softwares like live writer,winamp,1by1 and so on..

What gadgets do you own as of today?

I have N70 M and Nokia cellphone (6600),still curious about Apple products,Might have one in my hands by the end of this year!

What Feed Reader(s) do you Use?

I have Brief add-on installed on Firefox and also Feed demon on my desktop! Sadly I don’t use them much,as I love stumbling sites through search engine.

Do you have any favorite Tech Blogs you read on a daily or regular basis?

I do read some blogs but none of them are on my favorite list.

Why did you decide to blog about technology?

Influential friends were the real cause for the growth of this "Technology" idea.

What tools do you use for Blogging?

For blogging I use windows live writer and for spamming I use some sites and softwares!

What analytic tools do you use to track traffic on your blog?

Statcounter and Google analytics,first preference would be statcounter as it shows Good stats on some low traffic days

Is the technology niche saturated today? What are the things you do to keep your blog unique from others?

No niche is saturated, it is just some blogs which don’t get into their niche pretty well. Unlike other people who says "I write unique,do this and that", I am contented with KISS (keep it simple stupid) logic. Just simple plain things which is bound to help works well! Do anything what you want to do and results are always good…

How do you react to a product/software release? Do you feel the urge to blog it?

I do check about latest product release but I hardly feel like blogging about it as I already have some 100’s of incomplete drafted posts..

What are the features, qualities you look in a product / software before you blog about it?

Something useful, something different and something which not a lot of bloggers have already written about.

Don’t you think readers get a overdose of content with new product/software releases?

Sometimes it does! Moreover writing about new freeware software products or web 2.0 sites will help direct visitors to have a glance on latest useful trends.

Past / Future and Some Advice for Readers

Going into the past, would you have liked to take up another niche? Please elaborate.

I crafted some blogs in the past about making money and some songs/movies website, so I thought Tech blogging would be something worth which I would love to try! Proved very helpful though.

Going into the future, what would you do to stay in the higher bracket of tech blogs?

Get some freelance writer, enhance the blogging niche. I have 4 long years available to establish myself and my blog brand.

And finally, before signing off, any special advice on blogging about technology for our readers?

Golden tips – Read, find stats of other blogs or bookmark them, and One day you will be motivated to blog more and more.. call it a quest, motivation or competition but these things work!!

Can you Introduce yourself and your blog to our readers?

I am Karthik Ramadoss and 30 years old. Born in Chennai and living in Michigan, US. I started out reading blogs like Lifehacker, Slashdot, etc and have always been fascinated with technology & Internet. I started playing with WordPress and created Shankrila.com as a personal blog. Soon, I realized I wanted to write more about my interesting finds in the Internet to share it with my friends and family and anyone else interested. Now, that has grown into a blog that is today and thankful to all my readers who made this possible. More Here.

Operating System Preference: Windows, Linux or Mac?

Linux & Windows in that order. Linux – the endless freedon you get with it. I have secretly known to lust after Macbooks but haven’t gotten by hands on one yet.

Why did you decide to blog about technology?

Because it is something I love learning, tinkering, playing with everyday and usually can’t wait to share it with my readers. It’s easy to blog about something you are passionate about.

Scribefire & FireFTP Firefox extensions, Remember the Milk, Twitter, FastStone Capture, Google Reader & Flickr.

Google analytics.

Not really. The best thing about blogging is that there can never be too many bloggers. I don’t try to compete with ‘breaking news’ blogs. This lets me discuss things that are close to my heart and hopefully helps distinguish Shankrila from others.

How do you react to a product/software release? Do you feel the urge to blog it?

Not unless it is something I use everyday and it impacts something I do day to day in a positive way.

What are the features, qualities you look in a product / software before you blog about it?

I look for innovation, user friendly interface, intuitive controls. If it makes my everyday tasks easier in anyway I’ll blog about it.

Isn’t that what we techie’s crave for? So, no.

Nope. I still have secret hopes of blogging more about WordPress in Shankrila though.

Keep blogging about the things I love and am passionate about. I have been guest author here at Techie-Buzz before and elsewhere. Once I find the time, I would like to do that more.

Don’t be put off by a lot of blogs talking about the same topic you want to talk about. Everyone has a different take on the same topic and that is why most people read blogs. To hear your view on it. So, go ahead and blog it. We’ll read.
