These are encouraging statistics which could make sticking to a regimented dieting routine all the more easier if such technology was to become readily available in the future.

Early stages
As with Google’s plans to develop AR glasses, the ‘diet goggles’ are still in early stages of development, with certain questions arising such as whether you would actually believe you were eating a larger portion after biting into the food, or whether there is a distinct possibility of ‘cheating’ the process by removing the goggles to reveal the actual size of the portion being eaten, defeating the overall purpose of such technology.

These questions alert us to certain flaws in practical usage of AR technology in our environment, in that such devices utilising it would have to be highly adaptable and sophisticated for us to be able to unlock the full potential of such equipment. Responding to a varying array of different human visual and mental cues is likely to prove a real stumbling block for such technology to see the light of day in the consumer market, although this particular project may provide hope for those seeking that seemingly elusive wonder diet.

==== About the Author ====
Jamie writes for Direct Sight, a leading provider of glasses online.

Share: Comment on This Post | Tweet This | Share on Facebook | Save to Delicious | Stumble This | Digg This | Reddit This

TAGS: Augmented Reality, Google Goggles, Health

Augmented Reality Glasses for Dieting? originally appeared on Techie Buzz written by Guest Posts on Thursday 17th May 2012 08:00:00 AM under Innovations. Does Google have a better plan, or does Apple?

Whether the billing method of your cellular subscription is post-paid or pre-paid, the chances are, you receive mobile advertisements at least five times a week. Advertising has been changed dramatically over the last few years; from print, to radio, television, and now, to the internet and mobile phones. Whether it’s a basic mobile phone, a feature phone, or a smartphone, every new handset creates an opportunity for an advertiser to pitch or market a brand.

Google vs. Apple
The battleground for the two highly innovative companies – Google and Apple – was delineated with Apple’s promise to bring “the internet in your pocket”; Google retaliated with the release of its Nexus one, which had a similar slogan: “Web meets phone”. Such measures simply reaffirm an obvious fact; in the coming years, internet usage will shift from desktop/laptop computing to the fancy toys that giants such as Apple, Google and Nokia come up with every year. This means that with more mobile units sold, the opportunities for mobile advertisers will increase.

In 2009, both Apple and Google showed interest in buying AdMob, a promising California-based mobile advertising startup, well-known for serving innovative ads on the Android and iOS platforms. Though the two companies are looking to achieve the same goal (dominance in mobile advertisement), there is an obvious difference in their game plan.

iAd – emotions meet interactivity
At the launch of iAd, a mobile advertising service operated by Apple, Steve Jobs immediately rejected the idea of search based advertisement model on mobile phones. According to him, mobile internet users do not spend time searching queries. Instead, they prefer using apps, and this is where the opportunity for advertising lies. These ads contain interactive content, and would not require the user to leave the app. It seems as if Apple is all set to revolutionize the mobile advertising industry by combining the two essential advertisements ingredients – emotions and interactivity.

Adsense – making sense with search
According to Google, search engine use via mobile phones is significantly increasing. Cool features like ‘Click-to-call search ads’ allow users to directly dial the numbers included in the search ads with a click. Google believes that “search advertising will remain the central way for many businesses connect with consumers on mobile devices”. Together with AdMob, the search giant plans to reach out to the vast audience of mobile phone users and, unlike Apple, they are not limiting themselves to ads within applications.

Conclusion
Both Apple and Google spend millions to understand their users, with respect to context (content being browsed) and location. At the end of the day, the company that successfully manages to amalgamate the two will be the leader in mobile advertising.

Author Bio: Sohail Qaisar loves to write on topics like technology review , checkout his very interesting article on graphics cards, nvidia or ati? While traditionally more common with temp agencies, a home-based call center workforce is rare, though becoming increasingly more common, with full-time call center buildings.

A remote call center working environment is exciting, for the employees in terms of having a more comfortable environment, as well as the employers in saving the costs associated with renting the building, but it’s also challenging.

Some of the exciting benefits of a home-based call center include:

Reduced operating costs

Reduced infrastructure costs

Success with the initial roll-out of the work-at-home model for delighted employees

But likewise, challenges include:

Service level agreements

Maintaining customer service standards

Coordinating shift scheduling/swapping

Let’s take a look at these challenges to home-based call centers a bit more closely:

Service Level Agreements: While there can certainly be automatic re-routing capabilities in place in the event that an employee can’t get to their phone the moment it rings, it may be difficult to prevent employees from doing other things during the workday while ‘waiting for the phone to ring’. There’s a delicate balance that needs to be attended to regarding managing employees and holding them responsible without micromanaging and over-monitoring. It’s a tough call to know how to handle the unique situations that could present themselves, like if several employees at once are doing house chores and all of their calls get re-routed. It would be hard to know or prove what they were doing, and therefore difficult to enforce discipline, at the risk of wrongly accusing employees of errant behavior.

Customer Service Standards: This relates less to whether or not a rep answers the phone, but more about his or her attitude and focus. With typical at-home distractions of children, pets, visitors, or any number of other unpredictable obstacles or noise sources, it can be hard to ensure proper focus for the customer service rep. In a call center, the environment is predictable and monitored, with all reps physically together in one space. With reps at their homes, it’s hard to be able to monitor the environment. Reps’ focus may be detracted from the call if the doorbell rings, a child needs help with something, a dog starts barking, etc. These breaches in focus can cause problems not only in terms of potentially lower customer satisfaction rate, but also in administrative expenses by calls taking longer or requiring multiple call-backs. This gets even more complicated in the event that a customer needs to speak to a manager. If the manager is also at home and potentially detained, what happens then?

Shift Scheduling and Shift Swapping: In order for this to properly work in an at-home work environment, the ability to shift swap or reschedule must be automated using a real-time central database of some kind. If employees can no longer speak directly with a manager in person or look at a physical chart to rearrange their schedules, this leaves gross margin for error if an automated system isn’t in place. It would be important for employees to be able to see where there are open shifts, who’s available to cover no-shows, and quickly coordinate last-minute shift swaps in real time. With the advancements in cloud computing, this may be an easier process to implement than previously expected.
Have you ever participated in or been a part of a company that has a work-from-home customer service call center environment? What obstacles came up? How were they handled? Please get in touch with any experiences, good or bad, that you may have had. However, RIM hasn't given up, and the new answer to their problems could be the Mobile Fusion.

Blackberry smartphones have long been considered RIM’s forte and the foundation of their success. However, one of the reasons why Blackberry hasn’t yet raised the white flag – despite things seemingly going horrifyingly kaput – is their BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) infrastructure. Now with RIM introducing the Blackberry Mobile Fusion – extending BES to manage iOS and Andrioid devices – this new product might become the marketing soul for BlackBerry in the near and long-term future – and this despite being originally marketed as a “value-add” for the BlackBerry fan base.

RIM’s downward spiral
RIM’s recent nosedive has meant that skepticism on all this related to the company has been pretty much on a roll for a good part of two years now. As RIM clings onto this downward spiral, it is easy to identify the major reason behind this freefall – underestimating the upsurge of iOS and Android. And it is there for all to see how RIM’s market share is going down like a distraught frown as a result. Here’s a stat to get some perspective: BlackBerry PlayBook has sold over a million units since launch a year back; the latest Apple iPad has tripled those numbers in its first weekend alone. And the frown just keeps on getting bigger and bigger…

The Heins era
With the co-CEO bidding adieu – or being bid adieu, whichever way you might want to look at it – new CEO Thorsten Heins has taken over the reins to deal with what in all honesty is a Herculean task. And mind you not your Average Joe Hercules, it would need brain exercise of the very top drawer for RIM to get out of this fix – especially since the latest quarterly earning has been quite abysmal to say the very least.

Using multiple platforms
Now before the rivals or indeed the skeptics begin their search for what they might think of as the final nail in the proverbial coffin of RIM, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion might just prove itself to be the magnet that distracts the nails away from the coffin, and turn the abovementioned frown upside down. RIM is the pioneer of MDM (mobile device management), and with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion RIM is finally willing to accept the truth that customers would invariably use multiple platforms, and as Tony Bradley of PCWorld quotes “leveraging its position as the existing embedded MDM solution to regain some relevance.”

Stemming the tide
Those that doubt that by smoothing transition with its rivals BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is playing right into the hands of Android and IOS devices, are missing the simple point that by expanding BES to support Android and iOS RIM would manage to stem the tide in the opposite direction and think about shifting it towards BlackBerry in the future as well. It’s a no-brainer really, and quite a few notches off being qualified as rocket science.

Much needed lifeline
As for perspective, there is hardly any doubt that BlackBerry Mobile Fusion would put RIM back on the map as a leading player for multiplatform mobile device management simultaneously. BlackBerry as an OS and its devices might have to bear the brunt of this move, but RIM will get a much needed lifeline. RIM might be shifting towards becoming a lot more than merely a mobile device company, and BlackBerry Mobile Fusion might prove to be an important milestone in this quest.

==== About the Author ====
Jane Andrew is the author of blackberry monitoring app and cell phone tracking technology. According to Wikipedia, modifying a computer case in any non-standard way is considered a case mod. Modding is done, particularly by hardware enthusiasts, to show off a computer’s apparent power by showing off the internal hardware, and also to make it look aesthetically pleasing to the owner.

Here are eight fantastic case mods.

1. Stained Glass PC
This creative PC case merges the old and the new with its striking use of stained glass enclosing the PC components to showcase a unique look. Copper and lead accents give it a simple and clean steampunk feel, and the stained glass adds to an eye-catching design.

Credit to boredstop.com

2. Edelweiss by Pius Giger

A stunning mod by Pius Giger called Edelweiss brings to mind an edifice. Elements in its design would not be out of place on a modern building, and the hierarchical structure is reminiscent of building levels. The internals are “hidden”, yet provide a sense of activity underneath the stark façade. Refreshingly, despite its seemingly complex design, the USB sockets and CD drive are extremely easy to distinguish and access.

Credit ugo.com

3. BETA by Peter Husar

You’ll find few PC cases that look sleeker, cleaner and faster than BETA, looking like a jet turbine made of porcelain. Immediately, the case brings to attention the fan in the front and center of the design, drawing back to a glass window into the internals. BETA practically looks like it’s about to take off at any second, head for space, leading his Storm Trooper overlords back to Earth.

Credit to million-dollar-pc.com

4. Trashcan PC

This improvised PC made out of a steel trash can shows impressive ingenuity. It’s components are neatly stacked, and stilts keep the PC’s innards stable. A CD drive slot is conveniently located in plain view, with the slots for peripherals on the opposite side. A couple of neat features of the trash can PC is that the grille-like structure of the can ensure the whole unit has adequate air flow and at the top are handles for easy carrying and transport.

Credit to tfproject.org

5. Pyramid PC

Here’s an impressive mod that is in the shape of a Pyramid, made of clear glass and black aluminum accents. Red and blue LEDs light up the interior making the pyramid seem intimidating and chaotic. Featuring a water-cooled GPU and numerous fans, this case won’t be overheating anytime soon, and a LCD display at the top of the pyramid allows the user to adjust the different settings.

Credit to zedomax.com

6. Tiny House PC

While this PC case looks like just any box you can buy at your local store, the inside hides an intricate little model of a cozy living room. With its tiny lampshade and comfy-looking couches, you can’t help having a sense of child-like wonder at the detail on this mod. No doubt the little overworked imps running your computer will live in comfort and style.

Credit to ugo.com

7. Jack PC

Here is a little PC that won’t have you fumbling to figure out where to plug your headphones or USB drive. A PC made small enough to fit into a standard wall socket, powering itself through Ethernet, all its ports and sockets are easily accessible from the front. Sporting 64 MB of flash memory and 128MB of RAM, this PC won’t be doing much aside from the most basic of functions, but its simple and convenient design won’t have anyone scratching their heads figuring out how to turn it on.

Credit to dvice.com

8. Rog-R

Reminiscent of Pixar’s Wall-E, Rog-R is ready to serve you. Fitted with remote-controlled treads and a robot arm, you can drive Rog-R to your next gaming session, and liquid-cooled electronics ensure optimum performance at all times. Camouflaged and battle-ready, Rog-R will handle any computing needs, as well as minesweeping and radiation-detection. Well, no not really, but that doesn’t make Rog-R any less cool.

Credit to ugo.com

==== About the Author ====
This article was made possible with the help of Peter de Jesus. Mobile payments have been on the horizon for quite some time now. A relatively new technology, called Near Field Communications (NFC), is also turning heads and is said to be a significant facilitator in bringing mobile payments to everyday usage. Simply put, NFC technology enables a person to use his/her mobile phone like a credit card and make payments simply by waving the device near an NFC-reading device.

Instead of having to stand in line at the cash counter, customers will be able to electronically check-out their items at the supermarket by waving their smartphones at the reader, which is just one of the many ways this technology is being planned to be used. Everyone – whether it is Google, VISA or PayPal – is putting in serious consideration into this technology. Moreover, NFC is also rumoured to be a feature in the upcoming iPhone 5.

Taking a step back from the hype
Just as with any technology that has not yet fully matured, security concerns about NFC payments are rampant among the more cautions-minded techies. While having a mobile wallet is amazingly convenient, most people aren’t too keep on having their money “broadcasted” through the air, where it can be intercepted and stolen. The amount of research going into identifying possible issues in the technology, and backing by the technology giants indicate that it is only a matter of time before usage of NFC payments become common among the masses, which unfortunately also means more exposure to cyber criminals.

Jailbreaking your own wallet?
One of the key elements of NFC security involves the security of the mobile platform on which this technology will be running. Any exploit that lets an attacker gain root access can potentially expose the contents of the (mobile) wallet stored on the device. The jailbreaking of smartphones is common practice among consumers. Mainly because it allows them to install software and tailor the device’s functionality in a way that may not have been intended by the manufacturer. However, if the same device is also being used for financial transactions, this opens up a dangerous backdoor which attackers can very well exploit. Ensuring the integrity of your device hence becomes a key concern when using NFC. Similarly, with the number of malicious applications that abound, especially in the Android Marketplace (now Google Play), it will become critical for consumers to protect themselves by installing mobile anti-malware and avoid third-party applications that have not properly been verified by the marketplace.

Virtual pick-pockets
It seems that the limited range of NFC would make it difficult to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks, which basically allow attackers to take over an existing session between two devices. However, security researchers like McAfee have already highlighted attacks possible on NFC, such as “Ghost and Leech”, which utilizes a fake RFID card to virtually pick the wallets of victims by stealing their credentials and transmitting them to a fake card. The risk of unauthorized readers capable of reading NFC signals is also present with such devices, and these readers are easily available on the web.

Of course it’s not all doom and gloom, as there are mechanisms that can protect us against these types of attacks. What’s missing is the coordination between the different industry players like smartphone makers, telecoms and NFC device developers, who need to sit down and develop a proper industry standard for securing NFC. Controls like digital signatures have the potential of being ported over to NFC to verify the identity of both the device and the NFC chip. Just like a firewall sees all the traffic coming into a network as un-trusted.

Conclusion
Every revolutionary new technology, such as ATMs, cloud computing, e-commerce and even the internet had to go through a phase of paranoia before it became accepted – and NFC is no exception. Until consumers are assured of the safety of their mobile payments, NFC will not become the success story it has the potential to be. This is only possible when all parties come together – with consumers protecting their devices with passwords and anti-malware software, and device providers implementing encryption and authentication services to ensure end-to-end security for all NFC-based transactions.

Author Bio: Sohail Qaisar writes articles for a technology review blog. Thanks to the continuing evolution of technology, we have access to sophisticated tools for creating more interactive, innovative and entertaining speeches and presentations.

You only have to look at the recent trends in phones and tablets to see that hardware has become more lightweight and sophisticated. We’ve reached an age where we can access all media via one medium. Therefore, let’s look closely at how these emerging trends are having an impact on the way we are delivering speeches and presentations.

iPresenting
iPads and iPods are a game changer for delivering presentations. These devices are great tools for viewing or delivering presentations and can also be used as virtual mice. The introduction of iCloud further enhances this trend. It provides instant access to information via the cloud, making it easier for users to access their data remotely. Furthermore, the devices are so lightweight that the entire presentation process is much easier and more convenient.

Mobile Phones
87% of people in the world own their own mobile phone, equating to 5.9 billion people. Therefore you cannot ignore the importance of phones for giving speeches. They can be vehicles to store your presentation, and there are also apps which can enhance or help facilitate your presentation, such as timing or speaker note apps.

In addition to this, ‘Twitterfalls’ are an increasing trend which encourages audience members to participate in live interaction with the conference which they are attending, paving the way for instant feedback on presentations.

Kinect Presentations
Kinect is an absolute game changer when it comes to delivering presentations. Microsoft has already spoken of their plans to extend Kinect’s useage from being only for video games. In February of this year, they launched Kinect for Windows. Although the company’s examples of how the device can be used for business focused on the service industry, we doubt it’ll be long until the system is fully utilised for giving breath-taking, interactive and perfectly timed presentations.

==== About the Author ====
Katie Nunnington is a content writer based in the UK. This puts home security at your fingertips.

Looking for a way to control your home security system from hundreds of miles away? Home security apps are some of the newest perks of the technology world we live in. The following are some of the benefits of having an app for your home security system.

Arm and Disarm Your Security System From Anywhere

Many home security systems such as FrontPoint, ADT, and LifeSheild now have their own free apps that can be easily installed on your smartphone or tablet. These apps allow users to check the status of their home security system from anywhere. Users are able to arm or disarm their home with a touch of a button. This feature is handy for the forgetful days when you arrive at work and realize you forgot to arm your security system or when you need to have someone check on your home or pet while you are away.

Keep Your Eyes on Your Home at All Times

Many smartphone and tablet apps have the capability of showing live streaming video straight from your home’s video surveillance system. Now, you not only can arm or disarm your system, but you can watch exactly what is happening in your home. This feature is very beneficial if you are away from home, but it is also useful when wanting to check on another area of your home from the comfort of your favorite chair.

Some apps even have a tilt and pan feature to allow you to view a wider area of your home with one camera. The live streaming feature can also come in handy when your older children are home alone for a few hours or you just can’t seem to figure out how the dog continually gets into the trash.

Stay Alert

What would a smartphone app be without alerts? Yes, even home security apps have alerts that will inform you if any sensor in your home has been set off. Sensors such as smoke, carbon monoxide, flood, or even freezing pipes can be installed with your home security system. These sensors will send alerts to your phone making you aware of exactly what is happening when it is happening.

A Virtual History Log of Your Home

Let’s face it, you can’t be everywhere at once, but when it comes to home security, you want to be. With home security apps, you’ll have a virtual log of what events take place in your home and when they take place. You can check up on times such as when the kids get home from school or when your cleaning crew comes into the house.

In addition to keeping track of times, you can also keep track of certain rooms. Your home security app can alert you if any off limit rooms, such as a gun room, has been entered. Although you can’t be at your home at all times, you can always stay aware of everything that takes place there.

We live in a world of constantly changing technology, and home security systems are keeping pace. Various companies first manufactured this new product in the fall of 2011, though Intel developed the name. An ultrabook is a very portable, thin laptop computer. Most ultrabooks feature an overall design inspired by the MacBook Air. Ultrabooks are just as functional and easy to use as a notebook computer, but with the fashion and portability of a tablet. However, some questions still remain about this new product. Who are these products being designed for? Will their price be able to compete with the amazing laptop deals currently on the market? Are they truly the future of laptops, or are they destined to be a niche product.

Targeted Market
Manufacturers are marketing ultrabooks to a variety of different markets. From businessmen to baby-boomers, and stay-at-home-moms to students, they want everyone to purchase an ultrabook. Ultrabooks are being targeted toward anyone who wants the next technological advance. As such, they are higher-priced to fit in with a higher-end market. Manufacturers hope that the ultrabook will be the next technical device everyone has to have, targeting the wealthy or business travelers. This is how many products first debut, for example – flat screen TVs, touchscreen phones, and GPS systems. Slowly, over time, the prices will trickle down so more and more people can afford them. Even when these products have lower prices, many people will think of them as higher-end products, thanks to their debut.

Price
However, are ultrabooks priced competitively enough to compete in the current market? The MacBook Air, inspiration for ultrabooks, is actually priced lower than many current ultrabook models. Macs are already regarded as higher-end items than Windows computers. Why would somebody pay a higher price for something that is already regarded as lower quality? While stylish and innovative, price is something that will definitely hurt ultrabooks. Even for a wealthy customer, they just don’t seem to be a good deal. People looking for portability might just go for a cheaper tablet, or even an iPad instead. Manufacturers need to find a way to justify the price of these products. Being similar to the MacBook Air isn’t going to cut it, if the MacBook Air is cheaper.

Looking Ahead
Despite this fact, the future of ultrabook computers looks bright. The MacBook Air is a very popular product, and some people will enjoy having a Windows alternative. Just like the MacBook Air recently replaced the traditional MacBook at Apple, consumers will begin to notice ultrabook designs replacing notebooks in electronics stores. Of course, with this development, the price of ultrabooks will go down, which will boost consumer interest in them. Once the majority of ultrabooks are cheaper than the MacBook Air, they will experience great popularity. Even though they will still be more expensive than tablets, they will have more operating power and capabilities than tablets. Tablets are nice to have, but they will not be replacing more traditional forms of computers any time soon, just as laptops did not completely replace desktops.

=== About the Author ===
Jeff Piper reviews everything from software to the newest and hottest thing in technology.
